Do we stop wearing coats in high school?

So my DS has just gone up to secondary school.

I’ve bought and returned three coats so far, non of which fit over his blazer. He’s informed me today NOBODY wears a coat, and the blazer acts as the coat. He can take it off in class but has to wear it in the corridor.

Is this typical? What do they do when it snows? Aibu to think this is mad?
or am I struggling to cut the apron strings 🤪

I’m used to bundling him off to primary mittens and a woolly hat!!

I'm sorry, I don't understand. Don't they have any school cloakrooms any longer? That is where we hung up ours, back in the 1970's!

Nope, no cloakroom here! You’d be lucky to get a locker that hasn’t had its door kicked in !

My DC ‘s high school has nowhere to leave coats. DS has a big ski jacket type thing which he used to wear over his blazer - it’s very wide on him anyway, to get it long enough. He didn’t mind carrying it, but i think he used to sneak it into the music store (he was well in with the music dept). DD wears her PE hoody and a waterproof that she can squash in her bag. And a baselayer! Anything not to wear an actual coat.

No cloakrooms, no lockers - all spare space now used for classrooms! At one point i understand they had “away” team changing rooms; now they must have at least 20 portakabins making up office and classroom numbers.

I do hope your DC's schools allow to wear vests/base layers under shirts. Plus the girls can wear thicker denier tights or legging under trousers.

My friend's DC attend an academy where they do have lockers - you provide the padlock. Hardly anyone uses them with combination of a faff - as year groups have their lockers in an area of the school. Year 7s between science and design. Year 8s, by languages etc. Plus the one way system.

I’m sure must parents are glad it’s no coats if Canadians Goose was the only option. To expensive to get list in the bus if nicked.

Mine took to thermal long sleeve vests and leggings / tights in the depths of winter. Otherwise no coat, gloves, scarf, boots required even when it snows. Mad but they were happy.
