Do we stop wearing coats in high school?

So my DS has just gone up to secondary school.

I’ve bought and returned three coats so far, non of which fit over his blazer. He’s informed me today NOBODY wears a coat, and the blazer acts as the coat. He can take it off in class but has to wear it in the corridor.

Is this typical? What do they do when it snows? Aibu to think this is mad?
or am I struggling to cut the apron strings 🤪

I’m used to bundling him off to primary mittens and a woolly hat!!

DDs school didn’t have a blazer as part of the uniform, so coats in bad weather were the norm. They did have somewhere to put them.
As dd went on the bus and sometimes had to wait quite a while at the bus stop in all weather she was more than happy to wear sensible coats - various types over the years. The school didn’t place many restrictions as to style and colour.

Coats are not a thing at high school, and that’s OK, because a hefty application of Lynx will keep them warm.

Sassylovesbooks · 09/09/2025 19:42

It's common once children reach secondary school. Well, apart from my son, who hates being cold or getting wet, so he wears a coat! The majority don't, not even when it's frosty or raining - snow that's a bit different and most do. Although where I live in the UK, we get snow once in a blue moon! I think some of it is because the children, then have to carry the coat around all day, as my son's school won't let them wear coats inside.

K0OLA1D · 09/09/2025 19:42

Yeah, my eldest is in year 9. He wears a school jumper under his blazer and sometimes when really cold a hoodie as well, which technically isnt 'allowed'. But he takes it off before he goes in and puts it in his bag. He's never worn a coat. He walks to and from school

Coats are very uncool round here

There was a brief period where north face coats were in, and a brief period where canada goose was in

Now it's back to no coats!

Yep. Same at my school. Been told by students that it’s not cool to wear a coat and “only old people wear coats”. As quoted PP said, only ‘high status’ coats that give you cool points are acceptable like Canada Goose, North Face and Zavetti.

LouiseK93 · 09/09/2025 21:03

Its the same as my daughters high school and has been this way for years! Leave them too it 😂

Itsnottheheatitsthehumidity · 09/09/2025 21:10

Mine is 19 and still won’t wear a coat. It comes from the kids not wanting to drag around a coat on top of everything else they have to carry. Also they weren’t allowed to wear coats inside the school building, but wearing a blazer was obligatory. Stupid rule.

Hiptothisjive · 09/09/2025 21:13

Home Counties here - mine wear coats but it’s cool to wear big puffers like North Face or Canada Goose. Every kid around here has a coat on.

Jumpers4goalposts · 09/09/2025 21:40

No coats here, occasionally I can make her wear a black waterproof if pouring but that’s only for while waiting for the bus and then it gets screwed up in her bag.

sgtmajormum · 09/09/2025 22:21

Yep, absolutely no coats at all. Mine WILL NOT wear anything renitely weatherproof.
In winter a pair of gloves and a school jumper get used but that's about it.

theonlygirl · 09/09/2025 22:28

My year 10 will wear a coat, but my god, it absolutely HAS to be the right coat.

Your best bet is a water resistant down jacket that can be squashed into a bag.

TokyoSushi · 09/09/2025 22:34

Two camps here (big NW town)

Girls: mainly no coat, unless absolutely freezing, then cropped black puffer, any brand will do, New Look, H&M etc, coat immediately discarded as soon as it is slightly less freezing.

Boys: Mad expensive massive great black puffer, has to be prised off them around Easter.

tumblingdowntherabbithole · 08/09/2025 10:16

No coats because there’s nowhere to put them.

I'm sorry, I don't understand. Don't they have any school cloakrooms any longer? That is where we hung up ours, back in the 1970's!

Vaguelyclassical · 09/09/2025 22:47

I mean we wore maxi coats, midi coats, whatever, over our school uniforms . . . . back in the Jurassic era.

Onelifeonly · 09/09/2025 22:47

Eldest never wore a coat to secondary school - large site, lockers miles away etc. Changed to a new school in y9 where they had to wear blazers, so no coat there either. Youngest went to a different school with a split site - both sites pretty compact and they mostly stayed at one depending on the year they were in. Wore a coat until blazers were introduced in year 10. Much more of a rule follower than eldest too.

But regardless, teens A don't like to conform and B dont feel the cold!

Neweverything25 · 09/09/2025 22:52

Well, weather must be worse around here than where you all are because children I see in secondary schools do wear a coat or rain jacket over their blazers. Maybe it depends on how much time they have to spend outside either on the way or on site or they have better locker facilities, who knows!

Miriabelle · 09/09/2025 22:57

It’s awful that schools don’t have cloakrooms any more — at my school there was a cloakroom per year by the loos, with kind of gates across that were locked during the day so you could leave your coat and collect it at the end of the school day.

Schoolchoicesucks · 09/09/2025 23:18

DS1 didn't have to wear a blazer and had a locker. He would wear a coat and shove it in his locker.

DS2 has to wear a blazer and doesn't have a locker or cloakroom. He has a thin raincoat scrunched up in his bag but would only wear it if it was absolutely chucking it down. And then it gets shoved in his bag and makes everything in there wet. If there is frost on the ground I force him to leave the house in a coat, but not convinced it stays on once he's made it round the corner out of sight.

No cloakrooms , no lockers. I doubt if expensive coats would still be there at the end of the day. However, there is always a reasonable collection of coats in lost property at the end of each term.

narcASD · 10/09/2025 00:15

Same here, blazers should be banned in school and I’m very pro uniform.
they sre not fit for purpose, too hot in summer, too cold in winter, coats are uncomfortable to wear with them, restrictive and ridiculous.
But yes I hardly see any secondary kids in coats anymore.

MrsClatterbuck · 10/09/2025 00:29

How things have changed. Nearly everybody had coats when I was at school. But then we had coat racks and once in 5th year upwards we all had lockers. Never heard of anyone having a coat go missing.

Eventmrs · 10/09/2025 09:25

Hoodies under blazers and no coat.
Hood goes up if it's raining.
It's frustrating but it is what it is.

hoohaal · 10/09/2025 09:26

I remember not wearing a coat for most of secondary school. I’m not sure why it was uncool to wear one though!! 🤣

TheOneForMe · 10/09/2025 09:54

I think it’s very school dependent. At my children’s school, most of the kids wear coats once it gets colder. They have lockers so that saves them carrying their coat around.

Sahara123 · 10/09/2025 10:28

I worked in a a school, a parent once complained that there was no coat option as part of the uniform. It was pointed out to them that there was indeed a coat, but not one pupil ever wore one. I worked there for nearly 10 years, never saw one !
They used to wear huge scarves in the winter, maybe the odd umbrella. Just not cool apparently!
