Posting for traffic…

Such a nightmare of a situation. So insane how he managed to evade police for 4 years. The youngest may not even remember his previous life?

At yesterday’s press conference, the commissioner was twice asked by journalists if there was anyone else at the campsite in addition to the two children. They would neither confirm nor deny, and refused to comment, which is fuelling the rumours. That, and the injunction. So terrible if it is true.

Yope · 10/09/2025 05:31

Surely if there was no baby found, the police would have confirmed that there was not?

Refusing to comment makes me think there must have been a baby found, and they can't say for legal reasons.

SueblueNZ · 10/09/2025 05:33

It is APPALLING in the extreme that anyone, let alone "Reality TV legendary producer" Julie Christie has been given exclusive access to police information and investigations so that she can monetize this tragedy. She says, "It's really important to me". Of course it is, Julie. Imagine the $$$ you will make selling this doco to world networks.

Disgusted.

Oh god that's disgusting! If there is footage of the police entering the campsite, it should never be released.

The Guardian has new photos up of another camp. It just looks so sad and squalid.

Well the Mother has got a lawyer now to stop some parts of the truth coming out.
What is there to hide?

From the story linked to, it is Tom Philips family that has got an injunction, not the children's mother, but perhaps you have heard or read it is her elsewhere?

Has the baby rumor been denied by Police now?
I know the police spokesman was asked in an interview if she would confirm or deny a rumour a baby had been found along side the children, to which she responded "Sorry, I can't".
The lack of police denial plus the Phillips family taking out a super injunction to suppress the press seems concerning.

I prey it isn't true, those poor children have been through enough without the thought of them being abuses too.

They've been abused by their father by being taken away like that. Why is it that some men cannot take no for an answer? The sheer arrogance of the man. This isn't some story of survival against the odds. It's the story of a selfish man who put his wants above the rights and needs of his own children.

Marshtit · 10/09/2025 06:47

there will be masses of people interested in these children for years

Sevenamcoffee · 10/09/2025 07:05

This must have been a very difficult situation for police in trying to avoid murder-suicide or Waco style shoot out. It’s very lucky that these children are alive. This is the behaviour of a controlling, entitled man who sees the children as his own property.

VegemiteOnToast · 10/09/2025 07:27

I cannot believe that anyone has sympathy for this man. The alternative was not that he was going to be forced to give his children to their allegedly drug addicted mother. The courts would have taken everything into consideration, there were grandparents etc who could also have had custody. He could have been the primary careholder with visitation only by the mother until she was successfully rehabilitated.
Instead he chose a life of living like fugitives in squalid conditions for 4 years, no education, no peer contact, probably malnourished and then forced to be accomplices for crimes. not to mention the other horrid things that have been alleged. It's all awful.

Needtosoundoffandbreathe · 10/09/2025 07:39

I completely agree @VegemiteOnToast

What kind of hero does this to three young kids and takes his children out to burglaries and shoots police officers? He was a dangerous criminal who put himself first.

autumnskyes · 10/09/2025 07:39

I'm in NZ too, just glad it ended with all the kids safe. Seems like every cooker in the country thinks he's some kind of hero for defying a court order and trying to kill a cop, I had to stop looking at any of the comments on Facebook about him because they were doing my head in;

"The police murdered him"
"If the children didn't want to be with him they would have just left"
"His kids had an amazing life living in the bush" (well get off the internet and go live in the bush if its so fucking great)
Plus endless comments about he was the best dad ever. I doubt they say that about any other parent who takes their kid along on robberies to use as a human shield.

I haven't seen anything legit about a baby though? I thought it was just one of those Facebook rumors, sure hope so.

True. There is still a lot of interest in Shannon Matthews over here but she was almost immediately given a new identity (and I assume some sort of press gag that stops it being leaked). I know she had siblings too but IIRC they were separated and given new identities too.
Can't see that being the case here though.

TappyGilmore · 10/09/2025 08:56

I’m in NZ and haven’t heard of anyone who supports him or has sympathy for him. Maybe slightly in relation to the charge of wasting police time when he disappeared the first time, because he didn’t ask anyone to go looking for him. But not since he’s been on the run for the last four years. Even people who don’t care which parent had custody of the children would agree that the children shouldn’t have been in the bush, they should have had access to a proper home and schooling and healthcare.

And haven’t heard anything about a baby from any reputable source. I hope it’s not true, and I suspect it isn’t, because I’d think the older girl would have been left at the campsite with the baby instead of the one that he took on his crimes.

LunaLuda · 10/09/2025 09:03

There are some absolutely awful, shocking details about this case that have not been made public. An urgent injunction was granted on Monday preventing anyone in New Zealand (media) from publishing certain details related to the situation.
The lawyer who sought the injunction is not acting for the mother but for the parents of Tom Phillips.
Being such a small country, many people have heard the details anyway (via the grapevine) and there’s a lot of anger and upset. Many will be glad he is dead.

IllBeLookingAtTheMoon · 10/09/2025 09:06

Prurient speculation. If there had been anything in it, the police would have swooped on him before this. Seems this cooker was not the master of bushcraft the media were building him up to be. He couldn't build a good bush toilet, and he's supposed to have delivered a baby, tied the umbilical cord and so on? Horseshit. It's prurient crap from people who watch too much SVU and love true crime podcasts about Elisabeth Fritzl, Jaycee Dugard etc.

guinnessguzzler · 10/09/2025 09:10

What I don't understand is why there seems to have been no social work intervention after the initial period of being on the run? He was charged for wasting police time but nothing reported about social work involvement at that point? Surely that should have been a priority? Perhaps something was done and it's just not been reported but I struggle to see how you can do that to your kids and not have any follow up other than for wasting police time.

Desperately sad all round.

Absolutely agree. It’s totally vile that people are perpetuating this rumour, how will that young girl ever reintegrate with bollocks like that floating around. Anyone who is close enough to the case to know is absolutely not talking about it.

Re custody; neither parent had custody when the children were kidnapped. His parents were guardians.

I find his family interesting and suspect they helped him initially at least. Someone mentioned that it seemed had fallen out with his support. His sister made an appeal a month or so ago asking him to give himself up. It’s possibly because they had fallen out, but equally possible that she knew he’d lost support and saw it as an opportunity to appeal to him to give up.

It does seem so far fetched, doesn’t it!

But if it isn’t true, why the injunction and why won’t the officials answer the question of whether there were more than two children discovered at the campsite?

Do you have intel that the “big rumour” is true? It seems to explain a lot of things on the one hand, but also seems so far fetched on the other hand. I don’t know what to think at this point!

Why the confidence in the rumour mill? I was in Chch in the vicinity of the Linwood mosque on the day of Brenton Tarrant's massacre of the Muslims at prayer. Things I was told confidently that day by the grapevine

  • Islamists have attacked the Arts Centre
  • suicide bombers all over Christchurch blowing up different buildings simultaneously
  • it's a policeman gone mental in a gun rampage

Phillips' other kids were found in a hideout only 2km from the road where he was shot. You're going to successfully hide so close to civilisation with a crying baby in tow?

powershowerforanhour · 10/09/2025 09:56

"the media will paint two narratives, the drug addict mother, the man with no choice. And the mother with the custody order, whose children were taken."

I don't think any media are going to be going with the "desperate dad with no choice" view. That gives major "look what you made me do" abuser vibes.

"we will now never know. and I do think there are huge questions to be asked of the police historically, and the family court system."

What questions? Why did they take so long? If he hadn't had the children with him he would have been lifted years ago (if he was committing the armed robberies, if not they would've probably just left him alone). The kiwi tactical cops and the NZ SAS regiment are pretty handy I believe.
But the children changed things, the situation had potential family annihilator written all over it, they had to try to avoid sparking that or worse still, an Aramoana style disaster. I suspect they applied a bit of pressure to the family to help achieve a peaceful resolution- hence the sister's appeal a couple of month's ago. When that didn't work they probably put the stinger up on a bush road away from habitation , when he only had one child with him, deliberately as minimising the chance of harm and it worked, the elder child was unscathed and the younger ones were old enough to manage on their own at a pinch, coming into spring for a few nights. Pity the poor cop took a bullet to the head from the nutcase during the op but it could have been much worse.

As for the family court- with hindsight it was an excellent decision not to give him any custody as it turned out he was the kind of person who would do that. (Not talking about the baby rumour, hopefully that's just a load of made up crap). I mean depriving his children of contact with their mother, friends and the wider world for years, an education and the social and practical skills to live in society, at a time period crucial for their mental and social development. What a shitty, arrogant abuser.

The issue is that with a vacuum of information, the rumour mill has gone wild. A baby was mentioned. Now the officials won’t answer any questions relating to the number of children found.

If the injunction does not relate to a baby, surely whatever it is can’t be as bad as the baby story? Because the baby story is about as bad as it gets. If it’s not a baby, then it would be better to let the real story come out rather than let everyone think the absolute worst!

"Seems this cooker was not the master of bushcraft the media were building him up to be."

Yeah, I suspect he was probably living in house or old woolshed or something of an associate most of the time till recently but even so, I was unimpressed by the "campsites". Two crappy bashas- that DH could probably knock up in half an hour, I would take longer as I'm a bit crap at knots- untidily kept with a couple of presumably stolen quads lying around. As DH pointed out, robbing shops and shooting the neighbours livestock ( if that's what happened to the bollock) is not exactly "living off the land".

The lone person against the elements and authority wank fantasy is worldwide but does seem to be quite strong in New Zealand, at least among some Pakeha men anyway. (Women and Māori seem to have a more realistic sense of getting things done in co-operation with family). Yeah true blue , tough Number 8 wire self sufficiency is great, and if you want to go full bush and do that alone, you do you boo, nobody is stopping you. But don't drag children, members of the public and police into it.

After 4 years I'd expect a fully furnished log cabin , what was he doing all that time when he wasn't on the rob? Picking lice out of his hair? I bet it wasn't homeschooling his children to keep their abilities up to the level of their peers anyway. The chinless wonder. There's a bit of "oooh the wild bush" romanticised crap about it, I bet if those shelters were set up under a motorway flyover or a shop doorway and he was making the children live there and robbing Auckland petrol stations with them on a moped , instead of one horse town dairies on a quad, nobody would be lauding the resourceful hero.

Not necessarily. If these were my relatives I’d do exactly the same.

These kids have been through an unbelievable trauma and the entire world is watching it unfold. They need complete privacy and if it was my relatives I’d take every legal route imaginable not to have the media reporting things like if their teeth are rotten or other sad but innocuous details.

Has it been confirmed that it’s the Phillips family that filed the injunction? The children will have their own lawyer through child protection (OT) so they could have possibly filed to try stem the massive scrutiny and public interest. It doesn’t have to be some sort of smoking gun.
