Posting for traffic…

Such a nightmare of a situation. So insane how he managed to evade police for 4 years. The youngest may not even remember his previous life?

Oh that's fantastic
I'm so pleased,I've not seen it on the news
What happened,how were they found

Dad and oldest child caught robbing a store. Dad was shot and killed by police while trying to escape (after he shot a police officer). Daughter then cooperated with police I think regarding the location of the others.

IllBeLookingAtTheMoon · 09/09/2025 06:44

The eldest girl, Jayda, was able to give the police some description of where they were. Given her trauma at watching the shootings that morjijg and the fact that she had been dragged about on a criminal job on a quad bike at night time, she did exceptionally well. They were able to roughly calculate from the petrol in the tank the maximum distance they could have gone and fortunately it wasn't far.

The bush is dense around there, but they have known roughly where he was all along. They knew he was likely to do exactly what he did (try to blow off a cop's head at the first interaction with him). It was clear he would not have hesitated to harm the girls if police had tried to close in on him earlier. The whole fucking ordeal he put the through was to spite his ex-wife and cause her distress. Horrible man.

New identities and lives for the little ones, maybe in Australia. The media need to stop showing their faces now.

I feel so sorry for the kids. How on earth they’re going to reintegrate god knows. It’s not just the missed years of school and missed years of normal family life it’s the fact they’ve spent the last few years with someone who quite possibly have filled their heads with all sorts of rubbish which they will probably believe.

EmeraldShamrock000 · 09/09/2025 07:09

It's extremely sad. I understand that the police had to be cautious to avoid the children being killed.

Yep and that person, pretty much all they’ve known, is now suddenly dead. It’s a lot of trauma.

Awful, selfish man.

I’m reading that as Tom’s family have got a lawyer to stop things being published, not the mother. I don’t think they would refer to the mother as “the Phillips family”. She only seems to have been referred to as “Cat” or “Catherine” and appears to have attempted to keep her surname private (although they were married at one point so perhaps it is Phillips).

Given all the rumours and speculation over if they had been helping him I'm not sure that would be my first move in their shoes.

Autumnleaves73 · 09/09/2025 12:02

So people were helping him ,to have got him a bike .
I find it hard to believe that the police knew where he was all that time and didn't or couldn't do anything about it .
I suppose we will never know the full story

Friend of mine a year ago is convinced she saw him and the eldest kid in a 4wd near Marokopa. She flagged a police car down and they took it very seriously though obviously didn't find him then. If that sighting was him it makes your wonder where he got a vehicle from.

Happyelephants · 09/09/2025 13:04

I've been following this story for years - shocking that some of the media coverage has been so admiring of his ability to live off the land, as if he's a Real Man, and his kids were learning important skills

It seems as if he must have had help, or al least locals who were aware of the area he was in, but did nothing to help those children, leaving them without healthcare, education, any society and their mother!

He seems to have been your standard issue violent controlling man, with no real care for his kids, living out his fronteir hero fantasy.

Those poor children, and their poor mother. God only knows what he told them about her.

MyAcornWood · 09/09/2025 15:12

I used to live in NZ, albeit South Island, but I am fairly familiar with the area in which TP was on the run, but even so I can’t believe it’s all gone on so very long. I am glad it’s come to an end now, altho I expect the trauma for the children will not soon be forgotten. I know it’s an area of complicated social politics, isn’t anywhere, but I can’t believe there remains any public support for him at all. Much less than before, ut still.
Very sad for the children but, from me anyway, no sympathy for their father. I was genuinely of the opinion that he’d have killed all three children rather than allow them to be taken from him, I guess this is a better outcome than that!

persianfairyfloss · 10/09/2025 01:53

I think it went on so long for that very reason, they were worried he would kill the kids rather than surrender.

2021x · 10/09/2025 02:29

In Wellington... there was quite the ripple when the news went round the office.

Not entirely unexpected that an end was coming soon, the behaviour had been getting more desperate and frequent.

Happy they found the children all alive, and I hope there is a way forward for them that is safe and we just let them grow up.

Kiwionthenet · 10/09/2025 03:21

The following is a mix of information from media reports and what is believed to be documented fact. Given the children are all minors (12, 10, 9 yrs), much will be suppressed to the public.

In 2021 Tom took the kids, who he had and was home schooling, and abandoned his vehicle on a Kiritehere beach and took to the bush.

Police called off the search after 18 days.

Later that same month, Tom reappeared at his parents farm and was charged with wasting Police resources.

Tom did not show up to his January 2022 Court date and 3 months later went missing with the kids again. What is suspected is that his first disappearance was trial run.

Sightings of the group over the last 4 years were made, but Police never seemed to be able to find the group. The bush here is dense and Tom knew the area very well.

As things have unfolded, it seems the Police knew more than they were letting on. Tom had weapons and was willing to use them. It is suggested that he also had assistance from friends, family and general public.

For good reason the Police were cautious and purposeful in their search for Tom. He was a risk - to himself, his kids and the general public.

The children's mother advised the Police that him taking the kids was to punish and hurt her. It was a custody battle. She worked with the Police and waited for 4 years in hope. She, as at 10 Sept is still waiting to be reunited with them. They will be undergoing a lot of stress, grief and having to acclimatise to the world they have not been a part of for 4 years.

A baby was reportedly found alongside the other 2 children. This has yet to be substantiated. There are unfounded reports that the baby is that of the eldest daughter Jayda. Jayda is 12. The father, again unfounded reports, is supposedly Tom Phillips.

This is a story that all of NZ have been following and there has been a divide of support for Tom and Cat (the mother of the children).

Many saw Tom as a hero, fighting for his rights as a father.

Others have supported Cat, a tormented mother whose children have been taken from her. She has had to endure 4 years of people telling her she failed her kids, that she was a drug addict, that she didn't do enough. Behind the scenes she has done everything a parent would and could do.

We don't know Tom's version of events and we never will.

The children will take many years to recover, if that is even possible. We as a nation and as parents, just hope that the reunion between the mother and kids is one of peace and love, and we send them all the strength they will need to get through this.

How utterly horrendous if that's true about the baby, sickening, my God

IllBeLookingAtTheMoon · 10/09/2025 04:04

A lot of inaccuracies there.

Well we don't know that it's true, and people shouldn't be speculating.

persianfairyfloss · 09/09/2025 02:44

Why should the mother's life be open to scrutiny? I'd hope Oranga Tamariki will be working closely with her if it is needed.

I am so glad the rumour there was a baby with them turned out to be false.

I’m not so sure I’d want Oranga Tamariki involved. On paper they are the most suitable agency to provide support/care, but they’ve not had the most stirling of success stories over the years by a long way. I also hope the family is protected by a complete news blackout.

persianfairyfloss · 10/09/2025 04:40

True about OT but hopefully they are the best agency to link the family with the needed supports.

A complete news black out would be in their best interest especially if there is a baby.

pollyglot · 10/09/2025 04:51

The area around Marokopa is so unbelievably wild and rugged, mountainous, dense bush...not too difficult for a man who knows his way around to get lost with little help. I think it's most inappropriate to speculate about a baby, though.

I’ve just read there’s to be a documentary about this whole sad affair. Documentary being vigorously opposed by the Phillips family and by the children’s Mother. Rehashing this sad affair won’t aid healing for those primarily involved in the slightest.

OT of course are the only agency available I agree. Sincerely hope they can be the empathetic, sensitive and the cohesive support needed now.

Has the baby rumor been denied by Police now?
I know the police spokesman was asked in an interview if she would confirm or deny a rumour a baby had been found along side the children, to which she responded "Sorry, I can't".
The lack of police denial plus the Phillips family taking out a super injunction to suppress the press seems concerning.

I prey it isn't true, those poor children have been through enough without the thought of them being abuses too.

I think we are all praying it is just a rumour, because it's beyond appalling if it is true.

Yuck to the very idea of a documentary. It took years before Aramoana was on screen in any form and that was bad enough for those of us who knew them.
