To think that shoplifting is not my f#%*ing problem

I can't he the only one. I've never stolen a thing in my life.

I have had it up to here with the extra security measures in shops lately.

Today in Sainsburys, I went back to the aisles with my PAID FOR shopping, to check the price on the shelf l as I'd been overcharged SO actually Sainsbury's were stealing from me. As I went back through self-checkout area where I'd paid, my trolley wheels then locked 🙄

....Also, not long ago, I did some shopping in TK Maxx and boots and the alarm went off when leaving TK Maxx because the person on the till hadn't deactivated the security thing. We went back to the till and the security person WHO HAD BEEN STANDING THERE WATCHING US, came over and rifled through my bag. I told him some of the stuff was from boots and he said, no, he had to check that too. In the process, one of the items from boots costing £10 went missing. So TK Maxx actually stole from us.

I used to love TK Maxx but wont go there anymore now.

Shoplifting is NOT my problem, I don't do it and never have. I'm not a criminal and expect not to he treated like one. Shops who are happy to take your money but treat genuine customers like shit are in danger of scaring off people who are there to spend money, they'll just end up full of shoplifters. 🤷‍♀️

I didn't know they could lock your trolley wheels 😐

Same, I've never had trolley wheels lock. Its perfectly acceptable to go back through because you could have forgotten something.

diddl · 08/09/2025 10:23

I once set off the alarm in Next as I left.

Looked back-no one was reacting at all.

Got home to Germany to discover that the Next item still had the bloody magnetic tag on!

Here in Germany at the local supermarket I set the alarm off.

Shop assistant asked if I had anything in my bag that I hadn't paid for.

I said no & that was that!

Not with your trolley it isn’t. You could easily be adding extra items to your bags.

I wanted to check of sainsbury's has some school trousers in stock.

But thought better of it. You need a recipt to get out and with two kids n toe couldn't be bothered with the hassle.

It was like going through the barriers in a cage. And haven't been in that sainsbury's before and didn't want to be bothered with the process of getting out again.

In both our local Sainsbury there's an "exit" channel next to the entrance barriers which people can freely leave by using. Right next to the customer service/security counter.

In places where there isn't, I tend to just hang around until someone is coming in and then walk through the wrong way through the entrance barriers before they close.

You can even walk through the "manned" tills

No drama. Lots of options. Never been challenged by any staff. But then I've not being doing anything "suspicious" like walking out with a shopping trolley full of stuff!

Of course you can go back and get stuff you forgot. But if you do it with a trolley full of stuff, don't be surprised if they want to check that you paid for it all.

WhatAboutTheOtherOne · 08/09/2025 10:36

If I was a supermarket type shop I’d make it members only and I’d use Face ID. If people didn’t like it then they can shop elsewhere. Everyone would get face id’d on the way in and shoplifters would be banned. Basically like Costco.

I hate shoplifters. They are nasty, pathetic scum. The ones you see loading up bags and shamelessly walking out of stores are particularly vile.

zingally · 08/09/2025 10:38

I dunno... I'm finding it hard to care. In my 40 years of life, I've never once been stopped by a security guard and/or had my bags rifled through.

Shops are perfectly entitled to put whatever measures they want in place. If you don't like it, shop elsewhere.

YourAmplePlumPoster · 08/09/2025 10:40

For bulk buying I shop online. Otherwise I just get fresh fruit and veg, meat and fish in local stores.

Funnywonder · 08/09/2025 10:41

I kept setting off the security alarm in our local Tesco every time I went in, but weirdly not on the way out. Mostly the security guard would clock that I had set off the alarm but went back to what they were doing. I kept checking my pockets and bag before I went in, but it was still happening. One day a security guard did come over to ask, in a very suspicious tone, why I had set off the alarm. He wanted to look in my (very small) handbag. I made a joke and said ‘Aw come on, I’m on my way in. I haven’t had a chance to shoplift yet!’ God, he was not amused. But he did let me go on without rifling in my bag or performing a cavity search or whatever the hell he thought he needed to do😆 It turned out the culprit was a lip balm stuck in the lining of my bag. It had a sticky white security tag on it. I didn’t even buy it in Tesco. And I still don’t know why it only set off the alarm on the way in, but not the way out. And only in Tesco!

Nelliemellie · 08/09/2025 10:43

It’s disgusting, they don’t want to employ more staff, it’s minimal, only one checkout open, with 2 of 3 staff doing the job of 10 staff. I hope more shops become like Amazon convenience shops, where you scan your debit card and the amount is taken off. If police aren’t doing their job then shops have to up their security otherwise they will disappear and everything will be online.

Badbadbunny · 08/09/2025 10:44

People are over-reacting. If you're innocent, you've nothing to worry about.

We get frisked every two weeks at our local football stadium.

You have to empty your bags of some items going through airport security, and sometimes you get frisked there too!

No big deal.

Mushroomyum · 08/09/2025 10:55

The type of person who thinks they’re entitled to compensation for being asked by a security to check bag before exiting shop such as @DeeKitch , is the type of person that is going to probably be viewed suspiciously whilst walking around the shop.

Everanewbie · 08/09/2025 10:58

I get your frustration. Asda the other day was like going through an airport. But shoplifing is a crime, and crime is everyone's problem, so I disagree with your tone. If you saw a percentage of your profits walking out the door every day, I'm sure you'd take measures to stop it.

nomas · 08/09/2025 11:01

To think that shoplifting is not my f#%ing problem

This is veering close to American style 'I can do whatever I want in public property' type entitlement.

Supermarkets are private property, they let you in based on their rules, so their rules are your problem. No one is forcing you to go in there or spend money there.

Not to mention adding to losses by getting vouchers or free stuff to soothe an ego, which in turn pushes prices up to cover those losses.

Rainydayinlondon · 08/09/2025 11:33

sweeneytoddsrazor · 07/09/2025 18:13

The price of each item comes up on the screen. Why not call someone over at that point to get it checked whilst you carry on scanning the rest of your shopping? That will save you going back in and having to then queue up for a refund

Because sometimes the “offer” which is stated on the shelf under the item is not then applied at the checkout. So the checkout will show the non offer price.
This often happens with meal “deals”

I work in a shop and have done for the past decade. 90% of the people do not steal because prices are high, they steal mainly laundry items chocolate coffee etc that they can sell on quickly to get their next fix. Or young kids stealing sweets/energy drinks/smoking bits and phone chargers. Gangs of Romanian women stealing hundreds of pounds of clothes/cleaning stuff etc.

In my experience genuine people who steal because they’re struggling to eat and survive are definitely in the minority. We all pay for their actions at the end of the day and they make my blood boil. I won’t stand there and watch.

How do you know they’re all Romanian? Did you check their passports?

People steal because prices are high. I see happening it all the time now but never used to notice it.

Rubbish, it’s not les miserables. They steal to sell stuff to get money to get drugs or because that’s just how they acquire stuff .

LillyPJ · 08/09/2025 12:04

DeeKitch · 08/09/2025 08:48

They didn’t - I shopped there all time time - never stole and was friendly with the other security guard - this was a temp I think

So maybe the reason was that he didn't know you and had to treat you the same way as everyone else. The reason could just have been that he needed to be seen doing his job or had been asked to watch out for someone who vaguely fitted your description. Maybe the reason was that he made a mistake. The fact is that you don't know what his reason was, not that he didn't have one.

People steal because prices are high. I see happening it all the time now but never used to notice it.

Go tell that to my 62 year old colleague who was held at knifepoint while a gang emptied the shelves. She’s been off sick since and is having counselling, I doubt very much she’ll return after that incident and unfortunately it’s not a one off case, it’s organised crime and anyone who works in retail will tell you that.

DolphinOnASkateboard · 08/09/2025 12:26

"People steal because prices are so high" is massively insulting to the vast, vast majority of people who aren't well-off but still appreciate that stealing is wrong.

OhNoNotSusan · 07/09/2025 18:42

the big coop has the spirits behind locked glass cabinets

Our little Coop has the joints of meat in the boxes and HB has ineffectual barriers up to supposedly prevent shoplifters accessing the laundry products. Just returned from a holiday to the US and in shops the deodorants were under lock and key. I always find it quite annoying in Coop etc taking the huge box with the joint of beef to the till to be unlocked, it feels like all no shoplifters are being treated as if they are. However, I do understand the problems that shops are faced with.

How do you know they’re all Romanian? Did you check their passports?

I think Romanian gangs coming over is a well known issue. They come and if they get caught get bail and head back home. Steal to order and they are paid a day rate apparently. I think they are possibly easier to recognise in hindsight as it’s really slick. Blend in, one person pulls an alarm or distracts security whilst the rest make off with the goods.

The average, local, shoplifter anecdotally often seems a bit wasted as they brazenly leg it out the door unchallenged by staff.

Were you asked to tip out your bag? I thought you were asked for Security to take a look in to bags
Do your colleagues also think that they should get a “big fat voucher” as compensation if they’re ever asked by security to see their bags?
