If your kid was at this nursery / pre school how would you feel?

So there’s a nursery on TikTok who put a video up saying ‘when you pass ofsted overworked and understaffed’ the nursery’s official TikTok page posted that fyi. Another creator stitched it saying ‘not sure why you’d advertise on a public website you weren’t in ratio. Which I think is a fair comment!

Then the nursery staff have messaged her 3 x all varying shades of ‘take your video down or else’.

finally today the Nursery’s official TikTok page has messaged her suggesting that all this was taken out of context and she’s caused a lot of stress and upset for them on (a public forum after they put a video out themselves) then before she could respond they blocked her so she did another video outing them on TikTok, that creator usually keeps the nursery providers anonymous

but she’s named them now, and it’s the nursery my niece goes to!

Aibu to be quite concerned about the behaviour of this nursery ? I’ve told my sister and she’s absolutely shocked by their conduct and is really worried that she might need to take her out because being under ratio is not allowed is it? Also the way they have responded to her seems way ott, or is the creator ott by overreacting ?

how would you feel if the nursery your children went to behaved like this On a public platform?

They wouldn't have passed their ofsted inspection if they were understaffed.

Why the f*ck are nurseries posting ANYTHING on TikTok?? This is absolutely bonkers to me

SpiralSpiritSocks · 07/09/2025 14:31

I’d think whoever is running the Nursery’s social media was an idiot and entirely unprofessional.

It sounds like the original post was performative and ill judged and they appear to have continued to handle it badly.

I’d be asking for a formal statement from
management confirming ratios and then I’d be watching them like a hawk.

Yeah it’s weird isn’t it? Maybe we are overreacting it just doesn’t seem like they handled it very well

What else is the nursery posting on TikTok?

Seems an unnecessary platform for them to be using - and yes as I parent id probably end up reading into their posts…!

It’s not that unusual. I’ve seen lots of Tik Toks from nurseries, usually when the kids are doing something fun or cute. It’s just the same as any social media platform and loads of nurseries use Facebook and instagram.

As pp said, they wouldn’t have passed an Ofsted inspection if they weren’t in ratio. Sounds like a jokey video that was taken too literally to me.

Sirzy · 07/09/2025 14:35

Maybe wrongly but a nursery using TikTok like this would to me suggest a rather immature workforce.

They will have been in ratio for the Ofsted visit though otherwise they would have been pulled up on it. Reality is though most nurseries are running on bare minimum for the ratios which does make the staff overworked and understaffed. I don’t think publishing that fact helps anyone though.

Totally agree

FuzzyWolf · 07/09/2025 14:37

This all seems very immature and ridiculous.

There is also a huge difference between being understaffed and not meeting the correct ratio. Many nurseries over staff to allow more flexibility and to accomodate sickness/holidays. Ofsted would not have passed them if they did not meet the correct ratio. It sounds like there has been a misunderstanding by someone watching social media that has got completely out of hand.

They might be in legal ratio but also have children with significant SEN/ high need (who are not receiving additional funding as EHCP is a lengthy process)

OrangeCars · 07/09/2025 14:42

I'm probably old fashioned, but I wouldn't put my kid in a nursery that posted anything on TikTok, seems ridiculous to me.

I agree with you! I don’t think my sister looked at that side of things but I’d be really concerned if it was a setting my kids went to.

I mean, I think the whole situation is bonkers, but I would interpret understaffed as exactly that, without all the staff they usually have to run the nursery so some staff had to come in on their days off and put in extra hours. Not under ratio, which means not enough staff on site for correct ratios.

Ofsted inspectors, as crap as some of them are, aren’t stupid and can count. They wouldn’t have passed if they were under ratio.

It’s a poorly thought through thing to post, but this ‘influencer’ also sounds like a nut job.

NoThanksNeeded · 07/09/2025 14:57

Understaffed =/= Under ratio

Lots of nurseries use TikTok now. They are businesses and it's advertising

Sounds like a lot of fuss and nonsense which got all out of hand on every side

Obeseandashamed · 07/09/2025 14:59

Is it a London nursery? There are a lot of nurseries that are great nurseries on social media and pass inspections with flying colours but the day to day is terrible!

Exactly my thoughts, what the…!

AstonUniversityPotholeDepartment · 07/09/2025 15:04

Storm in a teacup. They're not under ratio, because they have their staff doing overtime.

Lucy5678 · 07/09/2025 15:13

Really unprofessional and I’d be very unimpressed, as I would be if my child’s school or class teacher posted similar. I really don’t like this trend of people posting on personal accounts from schools and the like and I wish it was banned. Schools and nurseries are first and foremost for children and their learning, not for staff to use as a backdrop for their social media careers. As for nursery’s official account getting into spats on TikTok… I seriously question the judgement and maturity of the people involved.

The ratio issue will be fine though, Ofsted can count and they’ll have been in ratio.

No it’s in southend- on- sea

I'd be concerned about the hint of threat being sent in the messages. 'Best for you'? How?

Yeah, I'd be pulling my kid for sure.

NoKnit · 07/09/2025 17:22

I wouldn't consider a nursery that is on social media. It is totally unnecessary. What do they need social media for? They probably fill their spaces without need for any advertising.

How bizarre

usedtobeaylis · 07/09/2025 17:24

I wouldn't like the nursery to have an unprofessional social media account. But understaffed doesn't mean under ratio. They could be using agency staff etc.
