Neighbour's bonfire

GladDenimGoose · 07/09/2025 13:49

I have a neighbour whose garden is long and runs perpendicular to my garden so that the bottom of their garden is quite close (10-15m) to my house. They have decided to light a massive bonfire at the bottom of the garden and, predictably, our house and garden has filled with smoke. Ash is raining down on our garden. We had planned to sort our garage out today but can obviously no longer do this. Aibu to be totally hacked off? Is there any I can do / you would do in this situation. I could call over the fence to be like wtf but I'm not confrontational enough. Maybe drop a note through their door to discourage them from doing it again?

If its huge you could call the FB and express concern as there is hot ash raining down on your property.

We unwittingly lit a bonfire at the bottom of our huge garden once as a one off. We'd lived there a few months.

Our neighbour got a stepladder and hosed it down from over the wall.

I went round with flowers to apologise, the previous owner had constant bonfires. I learnt my lesson!

I'm extra infuriated because we literally live 2 minutes from the local recycling center so there is just no need

I wish I had the balls to hose it down

Oh no! I’d be having a huge asthma attack and my DH would be raging.

Check your local council rules on bonfires. He could be breaking those time wise or proximity wise

It used to be after 7pm only, but i'm not sure if that's still a thing.

The right thing would be to go round and tell them your garden is filling with ash and could they please extinguish it.

I get it though - i hate confrontation.

Hosepipe through the fence??

It's so bloody selfish though isn't it?!

They must be able to see that the wind is wafting the smoke and ash all over their neighbours garden (you) but are happy to let it 😡

angry for you
