Putting 2yo in front seat of car???

dontcomeatme · 06/09/2025 23:00

I've discussed this multiple times on MN but we're at the end of our tether right now.
My 2yo DS is severely travel sick. Has been pretty much since he was born, we could never drive for more than 40mins to an hour at max and he would projectile vomit. We had to forward face him at 2yo which we desperately didn't want to do but he was choking on his sick rear facing and being in the laid back position.
We're now at the point where even a 20-25 minute journey is making him sick. We are washing the car seat that often we have bought a spare to use while one is in the wash, and as soon as one is clean the other is dirty 😭 I sit in the back with him primed with sick bags but it makes him hysterical just to look at them so I feel like I'm making him worse!
We've been to the GP multiple times now but they just say its one of those things 🙄 I'm ringing on Monday and I want an emergency appointment with a different GP, this level of sickness isn't normal. It is projectile! Comes out of his mouth, nose, absolutely covers him. He goes grey and feels like sh*t for the rest of the day 😢
Do they prescribe anti sickness meds for kids or do we have to buy them? Most of the ones I've seen online are for 4yo plus and I'm hesitant to give him them.
I am seriously contemplating putting him in the front of the car, with the airbags off. Is that insane? AIBU to think this is the solution?!?! He's 28months, 99centile height and weight. We seriously don't know what else to do!
We've started walking and getting the bus everywhere just to prevent the sickness but this isn't sustainable, we missed a hospital appointment last week because the bus didn't come on time 🤦🏻‍♀️
Any suggestions at all? What worked for your DC? Can the doctors actually do anything ? Do you think front seat would help? It always helped me as a child but this was the 90s, my parents shoved me up the front without even a booster seat.
Any advice is appreciated 🙏

I would have had issues (although not to this extent) as a child and had issues with my eyesight and frequent ear infections. I would be inclined to go back to a different gp and ask specifically for an eye test and for someone to look at whether this is a problem with his inner ears that the motion is disregulating.

@Lavender14 yes that's what I was thinking to, I've managed to get a GP appointment tomorrow afternoon so I'm going to ask for a few referrals. Even if it just rules out any underlying issue, I think its worth investigating x

You're not a very nice person are you ? Thanks but no thanks.

Just seen you lecturing many a poster on there is no need to drive

🤷‍♀️

Lecture is a strong word jeez 🙄 if anything people lectured me about not driving. My baby has been in and out of hospital for 5 months and you're nit picking over the fact I've had to depend on a car more frequently? Seriously not okay behaviour. Show a little empathy maybe. Less stalkerish behaviour wouldn't go amiss either.

@Emailsshow didn't it!

He was definitely better in the front the first time I tried for 35 minutes. But we had to nip out yesterday and although he wasn't sick, which is huge, he did start crying a bit and saying "mammy tummy hurts". We came home straight away. So it has improved the situation but definitely hasn't eliminated the problem. I have an appointment this afternoon for him!

@dontcomeatme you’ve got a repeat troll coming and goading, being banned then re registering and returning. Just FYI.

@biscuitsandabreak aw how fun 😕 I don't know how people have the time for it.

Just an update if anyone is still hanging around. The GP said his sickness was definitely on the severe side and agreed to keep him in the front of the car until we could figure out something to help him. She's referred him for his eyes as well as ENT and in the meantime prescribed promethazine, which I had never heard of before. After a brief Google I'm a little hesitant to give it to him, but going to trust the doctors advice and try a low dose and see how he goes 🤞 I'm just so relieved it's been taken seriously! Thank you everyone for your advice and help x

Promethazine is phenergan, which was recommended on your previous thread.

It really should help! I hope it does as this is miserable for your poor child, and messy for you (of course).

Good luck @dontcomeatme

TheBroonOneAndTheWhiteOne · 11/09/2025 16:25

And @dontcomeatme I would give him the full dose. Don't bother with the lowest one.

maggiecate · 11/09/2025 16:30

promethazine has been around for a long time - it’s the active ingredient in phenerghan, which is what I took for travel sickness when I was young so 45 years ago. It’s an antihistamine which is effective for travel sickness. It used to taste amazing - had loads of sugar in it! The main side effect is drowsiness which is why it’s not the first line treatment nowadays but it’s not a huge problem for a two year old I guess! I used to have it the night before a trip and in the morning. Risk-wise it’s safer than having you driving while distracted by a vomity baby.

@TheBroonOneAndTheWhiteOne PP keep mentioning another thread I started regarding this but I have zero memory of it and I've looked through my threads I've started and there isn't any there? Which thread are you referring to? Was it about motion sickness or did that just end up in conversation?

I really hope it does help! Thank you x

It was about motion sickness, and it may not have been you. Unless you N/C.
Apologies if I'm mistaken.

No all of my threads are in the ones I started, even N/C ones. I think I may have asked the question on someone else's thread. I definitely haven't started one. No need to apologise, you're just the 2nd or 3rd to say I've started one before and I started to think I was losing my marbles 😅

The GP recommended those but they have zero effect. Someone mentioned kids kwells to me or dramamine but I'm anxious to try. Going to order something now i think

Dramamine for kids is 2+ here, we’re not in the UK though.

@Unrealnotunrealistic I can't seem to actually buy it here I would have to ship from US, unless I'm googling wrong, but nothing is coming up! Kwells is definitely 4+ here x

You can buy Dramamine on Ebay but only the adult dose.

Here's the dosage of promethazine for travel sickness in children

I'd give your child some the night before and also an hour before he gets in the car.

Hope you can ignore the weird trolls Grin I think everyone sensible can see what you're doing makes sense, hope you can find a solution for him!

BTW, when I was a child, sitting in the front absolutely helped me with travel sickness. And I grew out of it.

I also advise people all the time on car seat stuff and I don't drive either! My DH drives or we get lifts with other people.

dontcomeatme · 11/09/2025 19:53

@BertieBotts yes I think a lot of assumptions were made here 😅 as soon as you talk about being in a car you're automatically the driver!

Thank you for all of your help, your knowledge on car seats is insane. We are going to keep him up front to try and alleviate the anxiety around being sick, and start these new meds. And I'm ordering the i-irvana max to put him back in the back with ASAP, so fingers crossed x

Is your son quite a sickly child Op and prone to picking up infections generally?
