Putting 2yo in front seat of car???

dontcomeatme · 06/09/2025 23:00

I've discussed this multiple times on MN but we're at the end of our tether right now.
My 2yo DS is severely travel sick. Has been pretty much since he was born, we could never drive for more than 40mins to an hour at max and he would projectile vomit. We had to forward face him at 2yo which we desperately didn't want to do but he was choking on his sick rear facing and being in the laid back position.
We're now at the point where even a 20-25 minute journey is making him sick. We are washing the car seat that often we have bought a spare to use while one is in the wash, and as soon as one is clean the other is dirty 😭 I sit in the back with him primed with sick bags but it makes him hysterical just to look at them so I feel like I'm making him worse!
We've been to the GP multiple times now but they just say its one of those things 🙄 I'm ringing on Monday and I want an emergency appointment with a different GP, this level of sickness isn't normal. It is projectile! Comes out of his mouth, nose, absolutely covers him. He goes grey and feels like sh*t for the rest of the day 😢
Do they prescribe anti sickness meds for kids or do we have to buy them? Most of the ones I've seen online are for 4yo plus and I'm hesitant to give him them.
I am seriously contemplating putting him in the front of the car, with the airbags off. Is that insane? AIBU to think this is the solution?!?! He's 28months, 99centile height and weight. We seriously don't know what else to do!
We've started walking and getting the bus everywhere just to prevent the sickness but this isn't sustainable, we missed a hospital appointment last week because the bus didn't come on time 🤦🏻‍♀️
Any suggestions at all? What worked for your DC? Can the doctors actually do anything ? Do you think front seat would help? It always helped me as a child but this was the 90s, my parents shoved me up the front without even a booster seat.
Any advice is appreciated 🙏

Is your son quite a sickly child Op and prone to picking up infections generally?

@Doneit14 he's not sick more often than any other toddler, but when he is sick he seems to be really sick. Fever for 7-10 days whereas others are done after 3. He's in and out of A&E. He had the flu when he was 1 and was vomiting, coughing and sneezing blood. Its just always a severe illness with him, never a "cold". If that makes sense x

Did the medicine work?

dontcomeatme · 14/09/2025 19:48

@TheBroonOneAndTheWhiteOne he ended up a bit under the weather this weekend so we haven't been anywhere! Typical isn't it 😅 I'll post if it works as soon as we've had a car journey, fingers crossed x

I did with one of mine. RF was projectile vomit. Changed car seats. Even changed car ! Had to move FF at 12m after choking on vomit and me having to throw the car up a kerb and run round to remove dc from car seat.
It continued on journeys over 30 min. By age 2 we did front seat. Apart from once it didn't happen again. They now sit in the back and ok.

Not taking the car wasn't an option unfortunately 3 miles between pre school and other schools with a 15 min gap just wasn't doable. Plus college which was a 20 min drive after school runs.

All the other dcs have never had issues. Just DD

MeridaBrave · 14/09/2025 19:55

My DD has this and eventually grew out of it. After age 6 can medicate (can buy over counter) before that just the homeopathy tablets. Keep the car as cold as possible. Better to be in the middle of back as can still see road ahead which is why the front can be better.

wellingtonsandwaffles · 14/09/2025 20:00

You can have anti sickness tablets prescribed for kids on NHS but not sure about medicine if yours can’t take tablet - luckily my DC learned early . They can cause constipation though. We had years where DC was sick every time we drove anywhere. Age 6-7 it started to ease off but still have to medicate occasionally and avoid milk / porridge etc before driving - lots of bread!

dontcomeatme · 14/09/2025 20:32

@BlurryEyesAndChubbyThighs this is the same as us! Glad your DD seemed to grow out of it. I really hope this happens for my DS!

@MeridaBrave @wellingtonsandwaffles my DS has been prescribed promethazine as the doctor said he was quite severe. She's also referred him for some tests just to rule out any underlying causes. Thank you !

In the UK its illegal to RF in the front seat. That's why I'm so torn.

No it isn't, as long as you've the airbags off. Where did you hear this?

This was sorted out further in the thread. It is illegal if the airbag is on. Legal if switched off.

Exactly this! Thank you x

My son was very careful sicky in the back and rear facing in the back, never one sick rear facing in the front and loved it as he was looking straight at me.

Ent thing is interesting as I've just realised his stopped completely when his tonsils and adenoids came out. As did his febrile seizures and constant bad infections and reflux. I hadn't made the link but I'd say seek EMT referral.

Swissmeringue · 14/09/2025 20:40

We have one of these. She's 7 now and it's gotten a lot better. Bit of an extreme solution but I bought an electric cargo bike and cycled her everywhere. Really depends on where you live as to whether or not it's a workable solution but it helped us minimise car journeys. We could get to preschool, dancing, football, the park etc etc. all those journeys you need to do weekly, without using a car.

Thank you! That is very interesting. They have referred my DS to ENT just waiting for the appointment.

This sounds like a good idea, I have a 5 month old though so he probably isn't safe in one of those pully child things yet. Thank you though this is really a good idea!

Depends on the bike, I've got a long tail so they need to have good head and neck control to be in a child seat, so one-ish. But some of the box bikes (ones with a big box on the front) can accommodate a car seat.

Also we just never got on the car unless it was completely unavoidable (hospital appointments for example) otherwise we got trains, buses and he hated his buggy, so he travelled only in sligs and carriers and physically attached to me in the end. Thank God he walked early and well. He's 7.5 now and will tolerate car journeys with a bottle of water to sip from and something to occupy him, normally a switch game. His younger sister could be transported in every form other than a brief period of travel sickness around 6-12 months. It makes everything so hard having a child who is hard to transport.

I was so travel sick as a kid, I also travelled an hour each way to school on a bus, I had to suck mints for the entire journey to cope. I remember every Monday buying a quarter of mint imperials to last me the weeks travelling
