Why can’t clothes shops sell clothes in sizes in proportion to the population

noggla · 06/09/2025 08:39

50% of women are 16-18, so make half the clothes of that size. It makes more sense as Clothes retailers probably get more sales as if make fewer size 8 clothes. As the latter goes in the sale. Same with shoes. Make more 7-8. Also introduce size 9s.

I wasn't - some great tutorials on YouTube.

I'm sure there are, but I can't learn like that. I need to be shown in person so I can have my mistakes corrected.

Anyway, I don't wear trousers with hems nor do I ever intend on buying any, so it's a moot point, really Grin

Well good for you, perhaps you'll be kind enough to give your address and we can all send our hems to you?

What is the point of this self righteous smug type of post, lots of people cant do it, me included. So it is rocket science to us, we need someone else to do it.

Yeah, MN is a bit lacking in imagination sometimes. Just because you can do something and find it easy or manageable, doesn't mean everyone is the same.

Years ago yes, not now with fine motor control gone to pot and poor eyesight.

Fair. But that’s not the case for most.

Theres always one and its obviously you this morning

Im nearly 11 stone,, 5.6 or 5.5ish, not petite by any means. Even when Im 10stone which is what Im meant to be I am not petite.

I have to buy petite ranges to get a good fit. My clothes are 8-10, which clearly I am no where near in actual fact

Clothes are way too big, ill cut, badly designed, swathes of unnecessary fabric. Lumpy shapeless.

Im sorry I think you have completely misunderstood my post buy no worries

Anonymouseposter · 06/09/2025 12:39

Peole are posting from very personal perspectives ("I'm 5 ft 2, size 6 and size 3 shoes, I'm 5ft 10, size 9 shoes etc.). Retail shops aren't personal. they're for profit and will stock the sizes that sell, therefore different shops tend to stock more of different sizes according to who shops there.

I really don’t thin’ it’s smug or self righteous to be able to hem something (badly).

I do, for that reason. Not sure where it is, though 😁

But why for example would you buy nice new clothes and hem them badly?

Ok, fair enough!
I've learned loads of practical stuff from YouTube, plumbing, rewiring etc. I can recommend!

It's in that cupboard behind the coffee maker and the spare oven gloves.

soupyspoon · 06/09/2025 12:44

Ive also found when I have had the odd pair of trousers taken up, that unless they're a particular style or shape, it changes the proportions of the style, so wide leg for example, you lose some of the width and it looks wrong, ruins the garment.

The reality is I think that most trouser lengths are way way too long, they've been under my feet sometimes when trying things on, that would require 5 or 6 inches off the length and ruin the style.

RubySquid · 06/09/2025 12:41

By badly I mean the stitching isn’t perfect and a proper seamstress would laugh (or cry) but someone looking at me wearing them wouldn’t know.

I’m actually tall and dont need to - I do it when hems come down and I used to do it for DD when she was growing. She’s now about 5’6/7” and doesn’t seem to struggle with this length problem people seem to have though.

I've tried, believe me! I just end up getting frustrated because I can't get my hands to do what I want them to do 😂

Mines under the shelves in the living room with the sewing machine. Both only used for curtains/cushions which only require straight line sewing!

How tall are you? I do agree if it’s more than an inch or two it can mess with proportions. But as I said DD is just under 5’7” and doesn’t seem to have an issue.

See I'm 5ft 6 and usually not an issue but this year trousers seem to be longer. I bought a pair of wide fitting ones in asda. Would've been dragging along the floor

Cherrysoup · 06/09/2025 12:50

WaltzingWaters · 06/09/2025 08:50

As a size 8-10 I usually find that there’s very little in the sales in my size and it’s all big sizes left.

All I found when looking at the sale rail last week was bigger sizes, 18+. It’s frustrating.

Yes same height and same problem. I saw a lovely pair of wide leg chinos in Primark last year they were a perfect fit around the bum and legs and hung really nice but they were around 5 or 6 inches too long, it was incredible. Such a shame, would have ruined them, I think they were about 30 quid from memory and I did consider whether I would getthem and have them taken up but thats another 20 quid on top and would ruin the cut.

hufflepuffbutrequestinggriffindor · 06/09/2025 13:00

I’m a size 12-14 clothes petite for trousers and skirts/dresses since I’m 5’2” and a size 3 and a half shoe and I have a nightmare finding clothes my size! There’s always loads of smaller sizes and much larger sizes but very few in the middle. Also I find ample size 6/7/8 shoes but really struggle to find size 4 or 3! I know hardly any woman with size 7/8 feet either!

I’m a 33”- 34” inside leg and used to really struggle Levi’s, long tall sally and top shop tall if I was lucky. Now I can buy standard length trousers in Tesco sometimes! I tend to find them on the sale rail as obviously too long for most folk.

Really? I know far more people with size 7/8 then 3/4. I think I only know one (my cousin) with feet that small. Several in the 7/8 vicinity.

When I was size 16-18 it was always the 10-12's left on sale...now I'm a 10-12 it's the 16-18's left...I can't fecking win. 😃

This is the thing. Having read many of these threads and from my own experience, the size that is always sold out, is simply the one that you are looking for!

It depends what part of the country you are in. Midlands and south east have the biggest feet. Scotland and Northern Ireland thd smallest.
Several of my family including me are a 3. Whereas I don't know any women with a size 7/8 foot (Quite a few men though)
