AIBU to think that saying you are "born on the cusp" is total bullshit?

In my mind Sep 22 will always be a Virgo, Aug 22 will always be a Leo and Nov 21 will always be a Scorpio. Please comment your birthday if you're on a so called "cusp" and say which sign you feel more like

I think it’s in total bullshit but in the days of teen magazines it meant I chose whichever horoscope looked the cheeriest. (Sadly didn’t result in a charmed life and that boy I liked rarely understood he was fated to look my way.)

I don’t actually have any idea what star sign I supposedly am as the magazines couldn’t agree. And I haven’t really thought about it since then.

Making an instant coffee yeaterday, I didn't realise there was already a teabag in there. Tasted like a mixture of the two. It was a cusp of coffee ☕

A toffee. Or a key.

I suppose it depends on the kind of thing that being born under a birth sign actually is.

If it is something like, say, nationality, then cusp-hood is balderdash: You aren't 'a bit German' in virtue of being a French person who was born close to the border with Germany. Your legal rights, status, etc will be just like any other French person.

But if the stars affect us more in the manner of, say, the weather, then the French person born near the German border might have more in common with a German than a French person from the sunny south of France.

So, to establish whether cusp-hood is bullshit we need to work out the mechanism by which the stars control our life. Simples.

I know the only horoscope that matters - I was born in the Year Of The Chicken. Therefore it's essential I get another couple of hens for my flock, because the correct number for Chicken people is n+2
(That's what I tell DH, anyway)

HarrietBond · 06/09/2025 10:34

I know from back in the day that my combined star sign (one of the possibles) and Chinese year make me an incredibly charismatic and powerful person. I fail daily to live up to my potential sadly.

fairycupcakes · 06/09/2025 10:34

Born just into Scorpio but by far fit the Libra traits more with just an added bit of spice from the Scorpio influence 😅 I guess that’s the cusp you would be referring to OP!

Butchyrestingface · 06/09/2025 10:48

Well, I've never heard anyone say "you were born on the cusp of..." I also have no idea what the cut offs are and I've never looked because astrology is a load of shite.

So why should it matter?

Shite + more shite ≠ < shite.

LhudeSingCuccu · 06/09/2025 08:04

I’ll never not be surprised that people believe in astrology. It’s even more daft to me than believing in ghosts or gods.

Quite. I’d have thought believing this cusp business isn’t any more ludicrous than giving credence to star signs in the first place.

Butchyrestingface · 06/09/2025 11:05

Having said that, I've just checked the personality traits for my star sign and the two on either side and it all seems a bit ... vague.

I’m on the 26th august which is on the cusp apparently, yes Sue, thanks for letting me know.

WalkDontWalk · 06/09/2025 11:12

I too think it’s all bollocks. But then again, I’m an Ophiuchean, and we’re known sceptics.

(Yes, Ophiuchus. Yes, it is. It is. Look it up.)

Which house system are you using ? Equal houses ? Placidus ? Whole sign ?

And have you got your location and birthtime accurate to within minutes ?

gandeysflipflop · 06/09/2025 11:25

Are star signs still actually a thing? not heard of anyone reading them since pre smartphone/Internet days when everyone bought magazines and newspapers.
Not sure if my teens even know what horoscopes/star signs are.
They were just a bit of fun. Tbh though I do have the very typical traits of my water sign!

It's 2025. If you want to read a load of cobblers just ask Google anything.

UtterlyChilled · 06/09/2025 11:35

It's made up crap

GonnaeNoDaeThatJustGonnaeNo · 06/09/2025 11:36

It’s astrology - it’s all bullshit 🤣🤣🤣

KawasakiBabe · 06/09/2025 11:36

My DC are 23 and 19, I have no idea what their star signs are. I think I might have looked at some point but have forgotten again, what’s the point, it’s all complete tosh!

Newfigtree · 06/09/2025 11:40

Bullshit.

B1anche · 06/09/2025 11:40

Rightandwrong · 05/09/2025 20:02

I can safely say I've never used the word cusp in my life. In fact I've never heard anyone use it in real life.

I do, I use it all the time. Not in connection with horoscopes though. I'm now wondering if people secretly think I'm a twat for doing so.

FenderStrat · 06/09/2025 11:41

Believing in astrology is very similar to believing in religion.
The silly little differences and nothing compared to the big dumb similarities.

HarrietBond · 06/09/2025 11:41

Cusp is a normal word! Use it all you want.

I just asked DD what her star sign is. She told me, so she either knows or thinks she knows. I don’t know whether she’s right and I can’t Google to check as I’ve already forgotten which one she said and she’s gone out now.

ProfoundlyPeculiarAndWeird · 05/09/2025 17:46

Genuinely keen to find out how you decided that 'born on the cusp' is bullshit but 'born Leo/Virgo/Pisces etc' is not bullshit.

👍🏻🤣

FourEyesGood · 05/09/2025 17:35

It’s all bollocks.

Cormoran, is that you?

(I read this in Robert Glenister’s voice)

Of course not. Do you always take ramblings to heart?
