AIBU to say it isn't unexpected, or a surprise?

I have. Repeatedly. Have a little read.
And ask yourself why you are arguing about this when I’ve clearly said what she did was both illegal and unacceptable in a person in public office. (Though there is a discussion to be had about rehabilitation and how long different crimes should bar you from office - and about double standards with regard to frauds committed by people from different political perspectives).

I’m not arguing, simply stating facts. You can’t point to a single thing I have written that’s an exaggeration.

There is a rehabilitation period for fraud offences. But a conviction still precludes you from some roles. We can discuss whether politician or minister should be one of those; It’d rule you out of much of financial serves though. I’m happy enough for her to be an MP, but I think a conviction, even if spent, should preclude one from ministerial roles. Otherwise we could end up with a Chancellor with a fraud conviction. That doesn’t seem right

She broke the rules because the rules are massively complicated: I wouldn't have thought her Hove flat was a second home when she had no rights to the house she left in a divorce. It's hardly a loophole: it's a detailed technicality.

She broke the rules because she is a greedy hypocrite.

No I’m not suggesting that. I’ve said she broke the law. I’m just interested in challenging lies and distortions. We would all be better off if politicians didn’t lie and people reporting on/discussing politics didn’t lie.

Are you ‘challenging lies and distortions’, or are you minimising? Since the posts you are aggressively targeting have said she took a phone and she’s admitting to taking a phone I’m not clear what your problem with the posts is.

Furthermore the inference from her employer and her statements is that it was more than one phone, but the charges brought were for just one. Which is often the case and I suspect a result of a discussion between the CPS and her lawyer / her. I expect they gave her a choice - charge with multiple offences, or if she plead guilty at the first opportunity just charge her with the one. That’s quicker, easier and cheaper for the CPS. And much lower risk for her.

That is nothing compared to how much he will siphon off for him and and his cronies if Reform win.

This is complete speculation and trying to divert from Ange, who has actually broken the law and has lied and lied and lied. In other words bullshit.

That has still to be decided, HMRC may just accept the additional tax & that'll be the end of the matter

Yet you complain of speculation......

Yes I don’t think she’s broken the law - at least not that can be proven. She hasn’t paid enough tax, no question but for HMRC fraud it needs to be deliberate and intentional and the bar for proving that is quite high.

I suspect pay the difference, a fine possibly and that’s it. The bigger problem is her large reduction in salary, loss of her London flat and her hefty mortgage. And the £40k+ bill. Despite reports saying she’s worth £5 million, she isn’t!!

cardibach · 06/09/2025 15:04

KhakiTiger · 06/09/2025 13:38

If you are amused, great.

And yes our the two main parties are full of crooks who are as thick as pig shit. How do we know. Their results show it.

I’m not amused, hence the inverted commas. People who think silly nicknames for politicians are funny seldom have anything sensible to say.
Edit: I did try to start a sensible and respectful discussion wit( you, but you clearly aren't up for it. Says it all really.

BIossomtoes · 06/09/2025 15:30

Despite reports saying she’s worth £5 million, she isn’t!!

Unless you have access to her finances you can’t possibly say that with any accuracy. I expect she’ll let the Hove flat and return to renting in London, legitimately claiming it on expenses.

Looking forward to Nigel's imminent resignation, or at the very least his referral to the ethics committee. Or is it different rules for the 'man of the people's?

No what you tried to do was hurl insults. And now you’re flouncing because you got some back. Hopefully you’ll a learn a lesson from that.

I saw a clip from a speech she made about not having much when she grew up but they did have a house. Yes a council house. She then went on to be allocated a nice council house on a street of red brick terraces in her 20’s with only one child (note not on one of Stockport’s large council estates or high rise flats - she was very fortunate there). She and her ex husband both bought their council houses taking this stock out of public ownership where it could have been to be allocated to other people in need when their circumstances improved. The purchase price was obviously so low that she could buy the council house on a part-time care worker’s income (with some state benefit income top-ups no doubt). That’s one hell of a state subsidy that many people could only dream of. Especially many young people today.

She really is Beyond the Pale. And I've just read that she mercilessly tried to throw certain members of that conveyancing firm under the bus to save her own skin? When they hadn't done a single thing wrong and had actually advised her to seek specialist counsel.

If her lies had been believed those members of staff could have lost their jobs. And I'm pretty sure none of them owned several homes, or had ££££££ in the bank to cocoon them.

Nice. Really nice. Classy.

When people show you exactly who they really are, it's wise to pay attention. She always did look and sound like she worked on the bread counter in Morrisons and would happily chin you if you looked at her wrong in the loos of the local Ritzy's on a Saturday night.

She just said lawyers. By their denial those lawyers outed themselves and threw themselves under the bus.

Eh? I didn’t hurl insults. Find one example of me hurling an insult. I started a discussion around PR but you shut it down to say all politicians are thick, while using childish nicknames. And I haven’t flounced…

She was on the make from a very young age. And she is still on the make now even with her large salary. Such a good socialist. Not.

More likely she’ll claim the Hove flat is her main residence, and taxpayers will foot the bill for “rent” on the Ashton home, which the trust will charge at market rates. We can then also foot the bill for utilities and council tax too 😭

The byline literally says; “Last year Nigel Farage announced he had bought a house in Clacton, Essex, but in fact it was his partner Laure Ferrari, 46, who shelled out almost £900,000 for the property”

Why on earth would he be liable for tax on something that somebody else has bought? Unless he gave her the money (which money laundering would have flagged), he may have asked her to buy somewhere convenient for him, but he has not been party to the purchase. There's reaching, and there’s reeeeeaaaaccchhhiiinnnggg 🤣

We’ll be “footing the bill’ for a residence whatever she does because that’s how MPs’ expenses work. Did you really not know that?

Of course. As soon as she lied about the conveyancer she was toast. So she did it to herself.

The legal teams were well aware that they would be identified given that areas of the media knew full details of the story of course they defended themselves

I doubt Rayner cared about anyone’s reputation as she tried to cover herself but she will have certainly had help with her statement. The whole incident has been very poorly managed, not just her being caught out tax dodging but how it was dragged out and the pr spin it’s been an absolute disaster for Labour

Rayners career in high level politics is over and this shall follow Starmer too if he isn’t careful

We don't pay mortgages, only rent. She has not been claiming rent for the Ashton house before now, and was happy to buy her own property in Hove so currently we have not been footing the bill. I’ll bet that changes sharpish.

If she hadn’t tried to use the excuse and pass the buck she might have survived.
