Angela Rayner tax fail

1000 replies

Iwishicouldflyhigh · 03/09/2025 12:56

But it’s ok because she was just badly advised.
I’ll remember that excuse next time I fill in my tax return.

But still confused about one can have 2 main homes?

It’s the usual attacks and insults when up against the wall.

Labour too, nasty to the point of being found out then turn on the tears.

So no answer, you support the spreading of false accusations? to suit your own views i suppose.

As i've made it clear she shd go, i'm not defending her actions, let alone "up against the wall" how absurd!

Just the lies.

For those defending “our Ange” and saying she’s not a hypocrite, shall we consider a few things?

Has largely built or at least advanced her career based on vocally criticising the Tories for their actions and policies.

Is able to obtain a council house after a young pregnancy under a Tory government, and is able to raise the child on benefits under a Tory government, despite constantly criticising how badly the Tories treat “the poor”.

Buys council house using the despised Thatcher RTB discount, despite a mounting housing shortage, while working a min wage job topped up with union payments and welfare benefits under a Labour government.

Gets married to somebody who had his own home (not clear whether owned, rented or council), maintains both homes and switches addresses to suit her needs, perhaps including retaining council tax discount and the ability to sell her “primary residence” without attracting CGT? Wonder whether she claimed any single parent benefits during that time, given she did not live with anybody as man and wife, despite being married?

Hounds nasty Tories for avoiding paying tax. Demanded the resignation of Nadhim Zahawi (who made a mistake and subsequently paid the tax). Criticised the PM’s wife who was not actually a minister of state for her legal tax status.

Sells “primary” residence and pockets full profit with no CGT liability, as it’s her “primary” residence.

”Sells” her share of current family home to her son’s trust, which she is a trustee of, and buys nice new pad with boyfriend 300 miles away from the home she still regards as her “primary” residence, despite no longer owning it (except technically). Does not pay second home SDLT on Hove property because it’s the only property she now “owns”, despite technically still owning a property for her minor child/ren in trust.

Pays full council tax at her “primary” residence (Ashton, the one she no longer owns), so taxpayers pay council tax at her substantial second home (provided free through work), and pays second home premium council tax at her only owned property, which isn’t particularly close to either her place of work or her primary residence where she “stays often” with her children. Wonder whether she pays rent to the trust, as is not an unusual requirement?

Tells everyone she received poor advice so paid the wrong amount of tax.

Sexist/working class.

Cries.

Now substitute “our Ange” with a nasty Tory name and see how much sympathy you still have.

As I understand it her ex husband also acquired his previous property via right-to-buy as well.

It is being reported that the property acquired from the combined proceeds of the two right-to-buy properties was sold to the Trust in two tranches. The property was held 50:50. Rayner then sold 50% of her share to the Trust, i.e. 25%; it's not clear whether her ex husband sold or gifted his 25%. Rayner has subsequently sold her remaining 25% to the Trust.

Providing certainty to a disabled child us inevitably going to mean that parents have to plan for a time when they won't be there, and therefore the Trust needs at some point to provide somewhere for him to live. That's all entirely reasonable, and had she just taken some advice personally the issue, and dragging the whole thing into the public domain, could have been avoided.

The Trust had no need to take advice, and conflating the Trusts' advisors with her own personal ones, if they exist, is either because people don't understand the difference between the two, or because they want to muddy the waters.

nam3c4ang3 · 04/09/2025 09:15

Surely she will have to step down now’? She will never be PM - her career is almost in tatters. I’m pretty sure she has enough homes now to make some money off so doesn’t need to work?

The Labour supporters will be out soon defending our Ange. It doesnt look good though. Snout in trough and hoovering up everything she can grab for herself.

Interesting as to who gave her the rogue 'advice' and why she then decided to check that the 'advice' she received initially was correct. Was it after the Telegraph queried all of this?

I have dealt with HMRC before and some of their rules are confusing but she is the HOUSING MINISTER AND DPM! She has access to the best legal minds and people who can point her to experts yet some of the Labour supporters are saying she is just like us. Used a bog standard conveyancer despite the fact she knew her situation was more complicated than normal? I really dont think so.

The worst thing for me is that she used her son's trust money to buy herself out of the house in Ashton so he effectively has lost £162k. Yes, he owns more of the house but if she kept it in her name then surely she wasnt going to kick him out. The other thing is that she chose to live 100's of miles away from children.

Claims to co parent and also the Labour supporters are saying maybe she brought the flat for her son to visit and maybe there will be changes made to the flat to accomodate her son (100'S of miles away which will be most convienent for all (not!)

I DONT BELIEVE A WORD OF IT! SHE MOVED TO BRIGHTON WITH HER LATEST ON/OFF SQUEEZE BECAUSE IT SUITED HER. HER KIDS WERENT PART OF THE DECISION MAKING

All this poking around in her personal affairs is pretty grubby but she has brought this all on herself. It looks like she might try and tough it out but if there is no audit trail for this advice then she should go as it would be clear that she either thought she could blag it if ever found out or really really didnt think with her complex living arrangments that she needed any real advice.

Has the trust actually bought out her full 50% of the family home, so it has paid her in excess of £300k? She had already put half her share in the trust (gifted, or again bought out)?

No one needs to answer attacking posts, I’m not interested in the rest. More to point out insults at @hamstersarse are not needed.

Kitte321 · 04/09/2025 09:27

What an utter mess politics in this country is in. All parties, of all colours just seem self serving, ideologically driven and frankly, useless.
I thought the least we could expect from Starmer and AR (not least because of the relentless attacks in the direction of the Tory’s) was a moral compass. But no.
It’s a cesspool.
We desperately need a new party, with new ideas.

cocoonscriticupgrading · 04/09/2025 09:29

Oh dear Angela, did nobody ever tell you that with the measure you judge, you will be judged. I'm sure you will do what it is you would demand to be done had it been a nasty old Tory telling your story. No?

She doesn’t own the Brighton one outright but I’m guessing Tarry will help her pay the mortgage if she gets the sack 😂

That would be Reform then! Not the answer but Farage is a brillant speaker. Whether he can deliver is another matter as he is ONE man.

AR is truly awful and a disgrace. Grabby and gobby and has been found out. Starmer doesnt come out of this well either. Only on Monday he was defending her and said she had done nothing wrong. Maybe it was him rather than the Telegraph who made her take 'expert' advice.

Interesting that people have really swallowed the lies of Reform 🤔 how you can look upon that man and his limited company party as the answer to anything is fascinating 🧐

NebulousDog · 04/09/2025 10:01

If AR had to 'sell" her share of the house to the family trust, I am guessing that she is going to struggle to magic up the money for the extra stamp duty.
Coupled with the risk of no longer having a minister's salary to pay the hefty mortgage and that grace and favour home in London.

I don't think she can afford to step down; the question is "will she be pushed"?

Whether she has the money is irrelevant. She should also be facing a huge fine and the HMRC should now demand a full investigation into her affairs.

These very valid reasons were no doubt the real reasons for her tears during the interview.

She's got herself in a right old mess with a £40k tax bill to pay, plus a hefty mortgage and uncertainty over her job.

If AR moved to the backbenches, she would take a 70k pay cut.

Hmmmm. Was increasing her sons share of the house from 50% to 75% in his best interests.. that’s the interesting point in this..

It may depend on what ready cash is needed for his care now - otherwise they could claim (and probably will) that the house being an asset which will appreciate builds in a benefit for his future

IMO, though, it's more about how it looks. Trusts are a fairly complex area, and some will just think she's "pinched her son's money" ... recoverable from for someone with proven integrity perhaps, but maybe less so for one who's already come a cropper repeatedly

TizerorFizz · 04/09/2025 10:19

She will just have to sell the £800,000 flat then, won’t she! Go and live in her constituency! Not at the other end of the country. Who would think living near Brighton so far from her DC was a good idea anyway? The whole thing is very odd. When does she see her disabled child?

Because she’s messed all this up either due to stupidity or trying to pull a fast one, she’s invited a lot more scrutiny into her private life than she otherwise would have. The Brighton flat is to be near Tarrys ex wife and his kids. So nowt to do with Ange and her family at all. And her team had put a cock and bull story out about her needing ‘space’ due to the stress of everything and that’s why she bought the flat in Brighton. 😂 she must think we’re all stupid.
Theres also now allegations of Tarrys business dealings and a potential conflict of interest as the housing department gave his firm loads of 💸 😂 it gets worse and worse and she’d be best off stepping down now. I’m guessing she’s also got dirt on Keir which is why he’ll back her to the hilt. The nerve of her turning on the waterworks and using her disabled child to get sympathy 😡

PropertyD · 04/09/2025 10:25

I guess she is mortgaged up to the hilt and with her on/off relationship in the mix what could possibly go wrong.

Having had a re think I do wonder if she is just really thick and got herself into a mess in her personal life. Very young Mum, living on benefits, three children, a divorce, and on/off relationship with a man sacked by the Labour party I believe (someone correct me if I am wrong).

She just really didnt think of the consequences because as DPM the rules really didnt apply to her.

LovelyLuluu · 04/09/2025 10:25

Starmer won't sack her because he's going to get rid of Rachel soon enough and he can't afford to lose 2 'top' women.
And she's got too much of a brass neck to resign.

However, even if Angela survives this she'll end up with egg on her face.
There is no way she can achieve 1.5m homes in the next 4 years.
There is a huge problem with lack of construction workers.

It's physically impossible to reach the target. Having a target doesn't equate to meeting it. The Labour party knows these limitations but take the public for fools.

So ultimately, she's going to end up failing. And it won't look good in 4 years when everyone says she's ok, she bought her £800K 2nd home by the sea the minute she could.

It shows her complete lack of judgement and maybe intelligence.
She could have set up the trust for her children and bought herself a modest 2nd home in her constituency.
