My little boy will be 1 soon and I’m starting to get family asking for present ideas - there are so many toys out there I’m struggling to narrow it all down. So please can I ask what the best presents your 1 year old got please ?

Thank you!

  • A plastic ball with lots of switches and things to fiddle with. Can't find an example

  • A tower that you drop balls down

  • In a similar vein, a car track that the cars slide down eg https://amzn.eu/d/bnBQcAk

  • Vtech toot toot cars, then you can ask for the tracks, garage etc for next year's birthday or Christmas

  • Books with moving parts

  • Matey bubble bath weirdly!

These don't sound like major things but they got a lot of use

A soft cloth ball thing with a bell in. Looked like a giant cat toy. Dc loved it.

Squeaky bath books

Woweehooha · 02/09/2025 19:50

A wooden train set. The one DS received was from Aldi or Lidl. They are all compatible with Brio, Bigjigs wooden train sets so can be added to.
DS is 3 now. He still loves playing with it and I imagine he will for a few years.
He also loved this car ramp

And these little wooden animals still get played with https://letoyvan.co.uk/collections/baby-toddler-stacking/products/andes-stacking-tower-and-bag

These are all so tasteful compared to some of the toys he has now he’s a bit older!

Simple things.

A walker trolley thing that they push along.

Blocks/stacking cups

Musical toys - shakers/bells etc

Fake car keys - essential decoy toy

A baby doll with a soft body like a corolle type one

Chickenintheoven · 02/09/2025 19:55

At 1 I remember my little one getting a big plastic football from my mum - was probably about £1-2 but they loved pushing it back and forward between themselves and an adult and playing with it around the house (was sitting / crawling but not walking)

other things they loved were stacking cups and stacking rings .

the other things that were a big hit were bath toys and board books.

they really have simple (cheap) tastes at this age !!!

Plastictreees · 02/09/2025 19:55

Probably a toss up between a teepee, water table and big soft play blocks. A rocking dinosaur was also a big hit!

Didntask · 02/09/2025 19:56

Some kind of Montessori busy board?

EmeraldShamrock000 · 02/09/2025 19:58

A large cardboard box.
Ask for vouchers or clothing, like winter pyjamas, a nice coat.
Many toys are wasteful at age 1.

Plastictreees · 02/09/2025 20:05

Conversely, we didn’t find many toys to be wasteful at all. What they didn’t use at first, they used over the coming year(s). The only thing we didn’t want were more soft toys!

Mixingitup · 02/09/2025 20:22

Water table (still in use 5 years later)
Play kitchen (also still in use)

andanotherproblem · 02/09/2025 20:31

Ball pit
garden swing
sand and water table
vtech activity table
minnie Mouse sit on car
scuttlebug
one of those activity bead table things
these are all she plays with out of what she got for her 1st birthday, doesn’t touch the rest

Foreverill25 · 02/09/2025 20:38

A walker or activity cube.
Scuttlebug
Talking flash cards on amazon!

That's understandable, next year family will want more ideas, before you know it the house is overrun with toys.

Patheticallysad89 · 02/09/2025 20:45

Some really good ideas, thank you everyone!

DS1 and DS2 both have winter birthdays, so I found it useful to think of the summer ahead - DS2 couldn't use the lawnmower bubble machine he got for his first birthday until 8 months later, but it came into its own then!

FourEyesGood · 02/09/2025 20:49

Tomy Hide & Squeak Eggs - endlessly hilarious, apparently!

JG24 · 02/09/2025 21:03

Squeaky eggs,
second hand basic stacking cups,
kitchen helper tower,
Books
Sandpit
Outside chalks
Duplo (I can't remember when she first starting playing with it though)

Amblesidebadger · 02/09/2025 21:15

Garden swing and slide set - still being used as you can replace the baby seat with a flat one.

Happyland figures and building

momtoboys · 02/09/2025 21:18

I came here to say the same thing!

SoManyDandelions · 02/09/2025 22:12

That's not my...kitten/puppy/parrot/tractor etc
Anything that involved balls or cars going down tubes/ramps etc. He LOVED the VTech play and learn funfair, but I assume it has been discontinued now. He loved click clack tracks like the one linked above.
Bubbles
If you've got a garden- a swing set and water play table

SoManyDandelions · 02/09/2025 22:14

Just remembered- the Melissa and Doug latches board. Both DC spent AGES doing and undoing the locks and opening the doors!

SouthLondonMum22 · 02/09/2025 22:29

pop up play tunnel
activity table
activity cube
ball pit
scuttlebug
push along walker
