The thing is, in order to be able to start questioning things, you need to have a solid basis of knowledge to work from. Without that basis, you're* more susceptible to propaganda and conspiracy theories.

I'm not saying you're ignorant, I assumed you weren't British from your comments, plus the lack of awareness that England doesn't have its own government (as well as the OTT shocked reaction when someone corrected you on this). But your latest post implies you may be British? Or maybe from a Commonwealth country? Not sure who "we" is meant to represent. I wouldn't usually bring up nationality as it doesn't much matter on Mumsnet, but you have repeated banged on about the English on this thread, so...

But yeah, I do think it isn't helpful to actively encourage people to look away from what's going on in other countries. We need more knowledge and more awareness, not less.

And, in terms of this thread specifically and how miserable so many people are at the moment, we need laughs too. Sorry!

I don't know many who exclusively use 'British' over 'English' or vice versa. Most Scottish, that I know, call themselves 'Scottish' and not 'British' (refer to PP above) just as most Welsh do not call themselves 'British'. Same with the Irish.

Regarding being miserable, I hear you. The 'announcement' is bizarre so I guess could be viewed for laughs.

My guess, Trump had some sort of surgery over the weekend and they want to prove he is actually alive and functioning. So turning a boring announcement into some sort of whoop de fucking doo.
