To have a holiday where no family members decide to invite themselves on?

Dh works in the family business with his father- IL's live 1 mile away. I would not class us as particularly close, they tolerate me at best. We organised a holiday last year for just the 4 of us to get away, told them where we were going and suddenly they were all coming, MIL, FIL, SIL and BIL - of course they stayed in a much nicer hotel than us

We booked our summer holiday and have just found out that they are planning on being in a nearby village the same week.

AIBU to want one week of the year away without all the family politics and having to avoid people?

Is it too late for you to change your holiday and go somewhere else?

YANBU - I would go fecking mental if I had to go on holiday with my in laws

What a nightmare! Next time, refuse tot ell them where you are going.

I have thought about telling them we are off to Australia....

I really don't understand why they do it, they don't seem that interested when we are at home, which is fair enough, I don't expect anyone else to want to spend time with my children. It just causes rows, because dh feels pressured into doing stuff with them and it spoils the 'family' holiday for me as I just feel like a spare part the entire time.

Or better still, tell them you are going somewhere really awful, then they can all go there and you can go somewhere else!

YANBU - What rude behaviour! You'll have to do as Belgo says and keep it secret next time. How does your DH feel about it?
