AIBU to ask where people get their moral compass from nowadays?

My formative years coincided with an age of TV where it was prioritised that the baddies got their "just deserts" and "goodness" prevailed, unrealistic and not always right for the right reasons though it might have been. But it seems now that this has been turned on its head with morally dubious, edgy and chaotic being prioritised. Many attitudes are very much better nowadays and I wouldn't want to go back but has moral relativism actually made things worse?

what?

CharlotteRumpling · 31/08/2025 20:24

I don't find it difficult.
I try not to harm anyone, pay my taxes, donate to charity when I can, help anyone I can if I can.

DiscoBob · 31/08/2025 20:29

Have people become more selfish in recent years? Probably.

But what do you suggest we do about it? My morals have always been the same. Don't hurt other people on purpose, don't be violent, don't bully or coerce, respect other people and treat them how you wish to be treated. And mind your own business!

Are you trying to say TV is more immoral and glorifies bad people now?

XenoBitch · 31/08/2025 20:32

By the looks of how things are going, they probably get it from Temu.

I got mine from the middle aisle in Aldi.

KrisAkabusi · 31/08/2025 20:33

Seriously? You think people's moral compass comes from TV?!

NeedAnyHelpWithThatPaperBag · 31/08/2025 20:34

@Kreepture what?

😂, fair enough

Are you saying you formed your moral compass from TV programmes? Not your parents or grandparents, friends and neighbors, teachers and religious leaders, books and textbooks?

MumoftwoNC · 31/08/2025 20:35

I don't completely disagree with you - I think you could argue that a lot that used to be frowned on is now "celebrated" like exhibitionism, porn.

However I'm just here for people to tell you (incorrectly) that it's spelt "just desserts", for several pages. [Happily pops popcorn]

MumoftwoNC · 31/08/2025 20:37

Last time someone used the phrase "just deserts" on mumsnet I think it got to over 20 pages of spelling debate. I enjoyed it. I'll have to find a link to the thread

The Littlest Hobo and Thundercats ensured I have walked a path of moral probity throughout my life.

BallerinaRadio · 31/08/2025 20:41

This is probably unfair but I think a lot of the behaviour I see from families when out and about is the moral compass is passed off from parents, but sadly the compass is off. I really worry about future generations because of the shit upbringings they have.

And I know it's a massive generalisation and unfair... But I can only judge what I see

Kreepture · 31/08/2025 20:45

oh god, sorry... appears my message got cut off xD

anyway.

I think moral compasses are sadly out of stock at the moment.

Me and my mother’s generation were brought up with Christian values even if they themselves weren’t churchgoers. That still filters down to a degree. But the emphasis has shifted now with Gen Z. They’re all about social justice as fed to them by the Tik Tok Bible. Not all bad - they’re anti racist, EDI and eco conscious. Great. But not really clued up on power and real politick. Or the rights of women. They are still fed the good old fashioned patriarchal algorithms of misogny.

Plus ca change and all that…🤷🏻‍♀️
