Day out friends..they left to go to diff restaurant on their own

Met up with close friends yesterday. We live opposite sides country. We picked scenic village, countryside & meal at a nice country inn.
We were 40 mins late (it's 2.5 hrs for us) 1 hour drive for us & got caught in traffic then stopped once to let DD go to the toilet & stretched dogs legs so she'd wee. All communicated with friends. We arrived, had lovely stroll, river swim and meal at nice country inn with great views. They had booked the meal...we thought lovely place. But when we got there they said they had to leave at 5.30 to go to another restaurant (just them and child). They are starters and went. They said they hadn't realised this place was a fave restaurant & was close to their home. (So why go today). So we were left. It felt v awkward & like punishment for being late maybe. It had been lovely day and ended on weird vibes.
We finished our meal on own then went to another beautiful inn for pudding. After this I feel perplexed. AIBU to think their actions rude & far ruder than been late. We weren't intentionally late & just how it goes with traffic & teenagers.
I don't understand why we couldn't enjoy the meal together as planned. They booked it on the day (it felt like because we were late). We avoided confrontation but left sour note. Our children were perplexed. Just odd & awkward. This friend doesn't like confrontation even if it's "we were a bit sad you changed to go elsewhere" so she wouldn't discuss if I did. But I'm left feeling am I wrong. I just can't see myself having issues if they had longer to drive and was late & I would not change plans on a meal that was meant to be spent together. Xxx

I think that comment was tongue in cheek, no?

I think this post is tongue in cheek. Mocking all the camel bladders on the thread. Not actually suggesting you wear adult diapers rather than stop at the services. 💐

sundayfundayclub · 31/08/2025 18:29

@MotherofPufflings I thought it was obvious but maybe not 😆

soupyspoon · 31/08/2025 16:59

Yes thats a nice message

Also, as so frequently on these threads, I dont know why people badger the OP about 'why didnt you say something at the time'

Sometimes people cant find the words, sometims they're still processing the information, sometimes they have kids with them and its not appropriate.

Absolutely

Hey, context. I sympathise with you but you’re looking unhinged now. You need to simmer down!

Pedant5corner · 31/08/2025 18:32

Catladyof7 · 31/08/2025 18:19

Maybe she should have set off a week earlier 🤣🤣🤣🤣

@Catladyof7 I don't think 40 minutes late is too bad. Accidents happen. I don't know what OP's journey would have been but a trip to a scenic location on an August Saturday, would have had me adding about 1.5 hrs.
If I'm early, I don't mind waiting.

I once arranged to meet a friend and because of traffic, my friend arrived 3 hours late. I'd given up waiting after 2 hours. Friend was cross with me.
Adding 3 hours to anticipated journey time would have been expecting too much IMO. This was when mobile phones and sat nav were not in use.
I think waiting 2 hours was long enough.

sundayfundayclub · 31/08/2025 18:32

@Catladyof7 I was taking the piss out of the posters who were saying they would never stop for a toilet break, don't need a wee, leave a day early, leave your family at home, build in car crashes etc. I actually was surprised someone hadn't said it as a serious suggestion.

sundayfundayclub · 31/08/2025 18:33

@WhiteWidowWithAttitude thank you

Maybe you shouldnt make such disgusting comments then ‼️

Not where I live it’s not. Have you only ever eaten locally to where you live?

They are main courses, you don't pay £22 for a starter, even these days!

Mate, I think you need to double check which posters you're replying to.

The poster who made the nappy comment has been arguing on the OP's side, just like you, hence it was fairly clear that it was a jokey comment.

And the person you just had a go at is a different one to the one who made the nappy comment.

There are some unpleasant people on this thread - the two you're having a go at are not those people!

The poster was mocking the people who expect people to not stop when they need the toilet. They were on your side.

OP is convinced its regarding lateness, I really dont think it is. There's more to this than meets the eye but the OP seems a little self absorbed if im honest and I know thats a horrible thing to say but shes convinced herself its all about her, when in reality

One of the couple could be a closet alcoholic and wanting to drive home after drinking so the other said no let's go to the one near home. They could have secret money problems and the meal was alot more than they had expected. They could have hated the menu. Had a big row she wasn't aware of. so so many reasons other than her lateness but she's completely convinced its all about her.

Didimum · 31/08/2025 18:38

Pedant5corner · 31/08/2025 18:19

@Didimum , she didn't add enough of a buffer. A long journey usually takes much longer than you think. My point was to factor in that it could take a lot longer than you think.

How long do you suggest when the delay is unknown?

They are starters. I’m in Australia. It’s $22. And you most certainly do pay $22 for an entree/starter. That’s pretty normal actually.

Do you actually think I’ve been accidentally ordering two mains every time I go out? 🙄 Or are you another person who doesn’t realise that life outside England exists?

An entree is a main course, not a starter.

thepariscrimefiles · 31/08/2025 18:43

Raven85 · 31/08/2025 18:24

You've decided it because you were late and thats that. You really shouldn't have asked for opinions if you were not going to even consider them.

Personally I think they either wanted a drink with dinner or their favorite restaurant is closer and cheaper.... just because someone earns good money doesn't mean they want to pay over the odds for dinner.

But OP's friends chose and booked the original restaurant. Why didn't they choose a closer or cheaper one in the first place? They were obviously pissed off with OP about something but apart from OP and her family being 45 minutes late, she can't think of anything else as they seemed to have an enjoyable time prior to sitting down to dinner.
