AIBU to ask how much ready 'cash' you could get your hands on today for an emergency?

I was just idly wondering how much ready cash I could get my hands on without cashing in pensions /investments or selling the house, in just a few days. For example a family emergency ,such as to pay ( heaven forbid) a relatives drug debts to prevent them being beaten up or to run away to a safe place etc. This is all purely hypothetical! I rec conned about 3 grand from current account, 9 grand from various saving accounts and 4 grand from credit card is what I could manage!

Would they accept monopoly money or my button collection?

I just came up with the relative with drug debt right off the top of my off head., honest😀. Suppose I could have said to buy something you see and just 'can't live without '! Ie a beautiful painting. I suppose my Interest in this passing thought was how much would be a typical amount a cross section of mumsnetters would be able to get their hands on quickly, Im not after your bank details!! A few years ago I would have had problems getting hold of a few hundred.

.You might as well ask everyone to post a random amount between nothing and a million pounds as it would have the same result as people make things up either to boast or illustrate the futility of the thread, as once all the wealthy people have told us about their 6 figure savings pots, the people who could pull £8.50 out of the back of the sofa on a good day don't bother posting.

None. Not a penny spare.
Looks like they’d be getting a well deserved beating 😆

CaffeineAndChords · 31/08/2025 21:58

I’m guessing some of these people are the drug dealers? 😆😆😆

DustyMaiden · 31/08/2025 22:01

12k I don’t keep more than that available.

ViolaChomp · 31/08/2025 23:22

About 20k. Mostly mattress money stashed away for just such an emergency.

caringcarer · 31/08/2025 23:44

£30k from savings account. £4.5k from current account. I've got £500 upstairs in my wardrobe in the fire safe in cash along with €500. DH has got about £18k in savings and £3k in current account. I suppose we could both withdraw cash from credit cards if we really needed the cash. I've got bonds and investments but would lose interest if I drew those early.

Ponoka7 · 31/08/2025 23:46

I've got places I could run to globally and enough to get me there. I wouldn't pay drug debts. If it was another type of threat, it would have to be less than me buying a gun. I don't part with cash easily.

Harmonypus · 01/09/2025 02:05

I'd be lucky to find £50 and that's a stretch.
I had more last week (not tens of thousands like many of you previous posters) but it was allocated because I'm moving house tomorrow, so I'm about to start my savings again, from scratch, once I've moved.

Literally this 👆. it's hilarious all the earnest listings of ISAs, and inheritances and pension pots along with the amounts in each 🤭.
It's Schroedinger's savings account, or something.

Jack Black Yes GIF

It’s a difficult one.
I’d say around £40… but I might try visiting the casino first to see if I can either make more from it or learn how to count cards quickly and find an accomplice to make more.

I could also try only fans but I think I’d get sued for causing distress rather than people paying to see me on camera.

I could try busking, I can’t sing but I could cover myself in silver paint like Nessa in Gavin & Stacey.

Thanks OP! I was really worrying about finding the money for my electric bill but now I’ve realised just how resourceful I can actually be.
I could end up with money left over in my account this month rather then having to use credit cards to buy food the last few days.

Doweneedjellyfish · 01/09/2025 03:38

I have absolutely no idea where that GIF came from 😂🤷🏼‍♀️. It looks a bit like the kind of thing I would use for my only fans but it wasn’t planned to be added to my post.

5K, maybe 8K...

Nothing. Well I guess I could withdraw some cash on the credit card, about £500.
No savings
No money in current account

No credit left here either, so. I'm out.
