I was just idly wondering how much ready cash I could get my hands on without cashing in pensions /investments or selling the house, in just a few days. For example a family emergency ,such as to pay ( heaven forbid) a relatives drug debts to prevent them being beaten up or to run away to a safe place etc. This is all purely hypothetical! I rec conned about 3 grand from current account, 9 grand from various saving accounts and 4 grand from credit card is what I could manage!

22k, that's our savings basically, plus whatever we are allowed on the credit cards, I don't know as we always pay them off. Maybe another 4-6k?

I should never have opened this thread as I have no savings so the answer is nothing. And this has just depressed me.

I don't believe half of it.

Mamabear487 · 30/08/2025 21:54

If I can use credit card probably about 17k if not then 10

billandtedsexcellentadventure · 30/08/2025 22:36

About 11k

inneedofchocolate · 30/08/2025 22:42

In terms of access to instant cash then that is restricted to what the banks set as a daily ATM limit but if it was a case of instant bank transfer then that’s different. For example, if my child was injured abroad and needed money to pay for surgery then I would use everything I had access to whether that be actual money in the bank or credit available and I would also call on family’s resources (in that instance). I would like to think that if absolutely needed then I would be able to access 100k within 24 hours. With more time I would be able to remortgage my house and could use that. Please note that I am using a
medical emergency as a random example, I always make sure that we have adequate travel insurance as I have come across so many horror stories with a go fund me.

MrsLizzieDarcy · 30/08/2025 22:43

More than enough to cover any family emergency. We used to have savings all tucked away in 28/35 day access accounts but ended up having to borrow money once in an emergency. Hence no longer using that type of account.

MiddlingMarch · 30/08/2025 22:46

Without alerting the bank, a couple of hundred quid.

More if I liquidise the Playmobil assets.

StrawberryWater · 30/08/2025 22:48

If I could pay in Lego, a lot.

Actually cash? About 800.

AquaShark · 31/08/2025 07:26

About £20 k in accessible case savings accounts. But would only touch most of it is a genuine necessity

alphabetti · 31/08/2025 08:04

£1500 but haven’t had my mortgage, gas/elec/water/insurances/phone direct debits taken yet. I’m a single mum and no maintenance is currently being paid. Conversations like this always make me think if there was a true run for your life situation it always the less well off/vulnerable who would struggle to get to safety…… Might just have to make a decision to send my 21yr son with the little money we have…….. not sure he’d be welcomed anywhere tho if they say he’s a male on his own……

I don't know why I open these threads, they are always so annoying and a chance for some to show off how terribly wealthy and well set up they are.

Not to self - stop opening "how much do you have in savings? threads!

unlimiteddilutingjuice · 31/08/2025 08:38

£3950 would be me emptying the savings, using up all my agreed overdraft and maxing out my credit card.

If I really wanted to fuck myself up long term the bank would probably let me increase the overdraft and I could apply for a couple of other credit cards and maybe a bank loan as well.

Thats how people screw themselves over paying for other peoples drug debts. Its very sad.

I dont say this lightly but I would let the relative get beaten up.

MiseryIn · 31/08/2025 08:41

About £20k but not today. It’s Sunday.

Im.glad others in same position..altho would obv love to have some savings. One day :) actually prob wont but nice to think

Lamaitresse · 31/08/2025 17:57

Probably around £40k.

Flakey99 · 31/08/2025 18:05

€10 between 2 bank accounts? I get paid €200 tomorrow. I don’t have any debt (no mortgage) and I don’t have a credit card. I live squarely within my means.

C152 · 31/08/2025 18:44

Well if it's cash, the £200 limited by the cash point! All the banks in my area have been closed, so good luck to any loan sharks trying to collect large cash amounts from anyone!

PetuniaT · 31/08/2025 18:45

Well into six figures from savings alone but I wouldn't withdraw a penny to help a drug addict whether friend of family. They'd be knocking on your door again after a day or two.

Zanatdy · 31/08/2025 18:47

Probably 150k or more, combination of my house deposit (60k), my mums savings, eldest son’s savings. If I included my ex too (and he would help me in a genuine emergency) maybe 200k plus.

GiveDogBone · 31/08/2025 18:53

About £40k. But the gross amount doesn’t matter, it’s what is that amount relative to (1) a reasonable emergency spend and (2) 6 months expenses. If it’s less, you’ve not got enough saved, if it’s more then you can invest the surplus.

mum2monkeys88 · 31/08/2025 19:10

Literally nothing , we dont have any spare money to save . No savings, no credit cards or loans because of debt. Current bank balance is 0.26 p untill 11th September. I hate not having anything incase of emergencies

BewilderedPiskie · 31/08/2025 19:31

Twenty thousand should the Yakuza need to be paid off; my husband likes to reassure me that we have enough in the savings with this scenario but it tends to make me worry he's not the responsible family man we think he is!! 😂

Anyone with £100k worth of accessible savings is making very poor investment choices so I don’t believe those at all!
