AIBU to ask how much ready 'cash' you could get your hands on today for an emergency?

I was just idly wondering how much ready cash I could get my hands on without cashing in pensions /investments or selling the house, in just a few days. For example a family emergency ,such as to pay ( heaven forbid) a relatives drug debts to prevent them being beaten up or to run away to a safe place etc. This is all purely hypothetical! I rec conned about 3 grand from current account, 9 grand from various saving accounts and 4 grand from credit card is what I could manage!

I'd try and get the drug beater-upper arrested instead.

LuckysDadsHat · 30/08/2025 11:55

£2.56

TheKeatingFive · 30/08/2025 11:56

Quite a lot, but we're gearing up for a house move

GladioliGreen · 30/08/2025 11:56

The bank is shut so whatever the atm would let me take out I suppose? I think it's limited to a few hundred.

Following with interest...

🤣🤣🤣

KelsCommemorativeSausage · 30/08/2025 12:00

About £120, plus change. No savings.

autienotnaughty · 30/08/2025 12:01

If you forget the withdrawal rules maybe 20k

WonderingWanda · 30/08/2025 12:02

Well banks won't let you withdraw large sums. My banks website says I can take £250 per day from a cash point and can withdraw cash over the counter....except on Saturdays. So today I could get about £600 from cash in my purse and two bank accounts. My banks website also says that for withdrawals from 5k to 20k they need 24 hrs notice. So again in a real emergency if I need cold hard cash I would be stuffed. Presumably online transfers might surface for some things.

blueclip · 30/08/2025 12:02

You can’t just “get cash”. I could get £250 from the cashpoint. That’s it. It’s Saturday afternoon and loads of banks are shut. Even if you went in, I’m sure they’d be very limited as to how much cash they’d actually hand over, even if you had it in your account.

GonnaeNoDaeThatJustGonnaeNo · 30/08/2025 12:04

A lot

Weekmindedfool · 30/08/2025 12:05

So of all the “hypothetical” examples you could come up for needing the case it was to pay of a relatives drug debts to prevent them from being killed or so they could run away….I think what that says about the OP would be a lot more interesting conversation than this!

MumoftwoNC · 30/08/2025 12:06

If it really was a situation of handing over cold hard cash instantly, over your ATM limit, then I suppose you could give them gold jewellery

Alreadybroken · 30/08/2025 12:07

Noelshighflyingturds · 30/08/2025 11:18

About 1000
This time last year it would’ve been 10p

Sorry nothing to do with the thread but what a bloody great username 🤣🤣

BananaCaramel · 30/08/2025 12:08

I could manage about £13k from savings and another £14k if I had to use my credit cards. Depending on the emergency though realistically I would ask my parents who seem to have infinite large sums of money and are extremely generous and like to use their money to help out and treat us “kids”

TakemedowntoPotatoCity · 30/08/2025 12:09

10 million from my local bank, shagged the manager
a couple of billion from my mate Elon
It's who you know...

mamagogo1 · 30/08/2025 12:09

About £100k but there are penalties on some of it, about double with a week or so notice.

mamagogo1 · 30/08/2025 12:10

But not on weekends, £500 limit on atm!

slownova · 30/08/2025 12:11

Probably about 150k if we took out all savings. We own our home outright and we have pensions.

PolyCat · 30/08/2025 12:17

Just me: 110k not including credit cards. Then joint accounts and my DH.
I would never supply money to a drug addict however.

SparklyGlitterballs · 30/08/2025 12:20

Well, quite a lot theoretically, as I have an inheritance and some ISAs that could be withdrawn, but I'm damned if it would go towards a drugs bill. Also, as a widow with a home to run, it's my financial security, so I wouldn't part with too much of it as I have only a small pension income to meet all my bills.

Lucy5678 · 30/08/2025 12:22

Literal cash as in physical money, about £20 plus whatever the ATM limit is for my current account. And some leftover holiday euros.

Money that isn’t tied up in property etc - enough for any likely scenario. Drug addicted relatives are on their own though.

Wiseplumant · 30/08/2025 12:32

I just came up with the relative with drug debt right off the top of my off head., honest😀. Suppose I could have said to buy something you see and just 'can't live without '! Ie a beautiful painting. I suppose my Interest in this passing thought was how much would be a typical amount a cross section of mumsnetters would be able to get their hands on quickly, Im not after your bank details!! A few years ago I would have had problems getting hold of a few hundred.

In that case, you deserve a pat on the back for turning your fortunes around. 👏

TidyDancer · 30/08/2025 12:44

About £15-16k but it would drain my savings completely and I absolutely would not be covering anyone’s drug debt with it. Play stupid games, win stupid prizes and all that!

MagnoliaTreeBlossom · 30/08/2025 11:44

Not going to share specific financial information on here. 🤔 This calls for one of my favourite jokes.🤣

Knock Knock
Who's there?
Nana
Nana your business!

I didn't think anyone was asking you specifically. Also maybe I'm alone in thinking that essentially sharing how much you have in savings on an anonymous forum is hardly "specific".

I could only find about £1,000 in cash and another £1,000 in borrowing if it were a true, serious emergency that might have lasting consequences if not dealt with. This is due to me being in my early 20s and having just purchased my first house. And also becuase I don't work, so my savings are all joint account leftovers.
