To think that surely Rayner has to go.

Blankscreen · 29/08/2025 09:33

Well well well.

So now it emerges that Rayner rearranged her property affairs and declared to HMRC that her new flat in Brighton is her main residence and saved £40k on the SDLT bill as a result.

She has then apparently declared to the local councils the complete opposite.

I'm sure slimeball Kier will defend and say it was perfectly legal blah blah blah.

Not to mention she has a grace and favour house funded by tax payers in London as her constituency office is so far away. Yet she 'lives' in Brighton - surely she could just commute that distance like may others do every day.

Surely she has to go.

Public perception will decide whether Rayner's 'career' ends now. Evading tax is exactly what she has done, whether there is an official investigation or not.

There’s a difference between tax evasion and avoidance. She hasn’t evaded tax.

Nope, thats not how it works, down to HMRC to decide that, not you, same with anyone else who has paid an incorrect amount of tax.

HMRC allow for this, perhaps have a look on their website for guidance if you are confused.

Public opinion moves on.

HRTQueen · 04/09/2025 13:11

She hasn't paid the tax she is meant to pay

people really do not care for the wording its the actions and the blatant hypocrisy

and Labour are making it worse by continuing to spin the sob/oh silly me I made a little mistake that I am so sorry for story

In terms of public perception that's exactly how it works.

Sidebeforeself · 04/09/2025 13:16

Well , public opinion doesn’t really have any influence until it’s election time. We can protest all we want but Starmer has said he backs her so I doubt she’s going anywhere soon

I'm not confused at all. I'm enjoying watching Angela Rayner destroy her career. it's hugely entertaining.

TiggerSnoozer · 04/09/2025 13:17

I don't think she's daft enough to have got this deliberately wrong just to save £40k - that would clearly be very very silly for someone like her.
Whether or not it turns out to be legally wrong or not is, I think, completely missing the point as anything illegal was clearly a mistake.

Where I think she's going to struggle is in the gleeful call of 'hypocrisy' from the public who've witnessed Labour accusing many people of 'immoral' (but legal) tax avoidance in the past.
Tax is complex - it is deliberately designed to be complex as it builds in many incentives to drive behaviour. E.g. Tax relief on pension contributions are there precisely to encourage people to save for their old age, etc.
Making a judgement call on whether or not people have structured their finances to avoid tax 'immorally' is just always come back to bite you if you have any financial complexities in your life and are a public figure.

For all our sake, let’s hope Labour members and Labour MPs are behind Starmer this time.

For those who are anti Labour, surely if you think he made the wrong decision you should be happy in the long run?

Some might describe that as nasty & vindictive?

Either way, seeing someone upset and enjoying it is not a nice thing, though you seem quite proud of it.

Why was there even a need to place her property into a trust for her child? If the property was to be kept as the family home and shared between her and her ex then a simple will could have been set up like most of us put in place. I don't like the fact that her child has been used in this way. She effectively took a portion of the value of the home into this trust and then withdrew it to purchase her holiday home! She and whoever was advising her thought they could be very clever and save some £££s that was due to HMRC.

Her child was awarded money by the hospital he was born in at 23weeks weighing less than one pound. He stayed in intensive care for 6months due to complications.
Raynor and her dh fought for 11years for financial compensation. The details are not disclosed

So a trust was set up to put that compensation money in
But yes they did not need to move the house into that trust and draw down the cash. They should have kept their son’s money separate.

It would be interesting to hear why that decision was made as it sounds like IHT avoidance as we don’t know how much money they got in compensation from the nhs

I'm sure they would. Any individual that refers to their fellow human beings as 'scum' is vile and beneath contempt.

You’d be joining the same posters who did similarly for previous politicians. Not really a leg to stand on from those quarters.

And as I stated previously, there were plenty of MN posters revelling in name calling/vilification/swearing at Tory MPs during the election.
They haven't got a leg to stand on with the faux pearl clutching.

yellowspanner · 04/09/2025 13:34

I also love watching Rayner destroy herself. She's the darling of the unions so Starmer is too scared to sack her as DPM. She was elected by the Labour Party membership as deputy leader of the Labour Party so he can't change that.
We just Rachel Thieves to do the same

I agree with this

I can remember Priti Patel making a complaint against the Guardian for a racist cartoon, according to some on here it was justified/she had misunderstood the cartoon. I think that is for PP to decide

I do not agree with homes being targeted or families (even with politicians who's politics create hate) its not to be ever tolerated

But seeing Rayner's crocodile tears at being caught out is laughable (that does not mean I am laughing at a woman being upset its that it is laughable as its so fake). Considering how she has so often behaved towards other MP's I can understand why some feel gleeful at her own actions have destroyed her own career. I certainly felt gleeful with Boris was forced to resign.

The left may support her, i doubt all will. And the left of the party not doing what is in the best interests for the party and at this point government is hardly new news ....

Yes many enjoyed seeing Caroline Flack in distress too, following her assault charge, its a horrible trait some have.

Yes it’s the same posters revelling at last politicians’ downfall. Whether Truss, mocking KB or other. Interesting they can’t recognise their own behaviour.
