To think that surely Rayner has to go.

Blankscreen · 29/08/2025 09:33

Well well well.

So now it emerges that Rayner rearranged her property affairs and declared to HMRC that her new flat in Brighton is her main residence and saved £40k on the SDLT bill as a result.

She has then apparently declared to the local councils the complete opposite.

I'm sure slimeball Kier will defend and say it was perfectly legal blah blah blah.

Not to mention she has a grace and favour house funded by tax payers in London as her constituency office is so far away. Yet she 'lives' in Brighton - surely she could just commute that distance like may others do every day.

Surely she has to go.

Had to laugh at some union bloke on the news stating that she faced greater criticism as she is working class seemingly to have been living in cave in recent years when tories faced none stop criticism particularly 'posh' BJ.

Shoosmiths advice to the Trustees, has no bearing on the matter with respect to the adviser on Ministerial standards investigation, because they are investigating Rayner not the Trust. The only relevant advice is that she took personally on the property transaction.

The Land Registry entry makes it very clear that Rayner is a co-owner, and she must have known that. To not do so would fall below the standard of care that a ordinary taxpayer is expected to take.

To hide behind 'trusts are complicated' is a nonsense with respect to her stamp duty obligations. Trust can be complicated, but property ownership, children and trusts is a very simple matter

Yes thats damning, a title deed entry is very obvious.

However, Rayner says she gave up her share, cashing it in, so presumably off the deeds?

Is this a current entry?

GasPanic · 03/09/2025 17:22

What I don't understand is that maybe a year or so ago (can't really remember) wasn't there some similar stories in the press about tax and selling properties or something like this ?

I believe nothing was found to be wrong at the time, but still, after than experience you'd think some extra special care would be taken to make sure everything was OK in the future.

Janiie · 03/09/2025 17:27

'However, Rayner says she gave up her share, cashing it in, so presumably off the deeds?'

Her son who the property is in trust for is under 18 so while I'm no expert I'm guessing as she is the parent she is obviously legally the part owner. Surely as any lawyer would advise?

Can we all just take a moment to imagine her face twisted in disgust and the abuse spouted by her if this was a tory?!

MarstoMinerva · 03/09/2025 15:46

Of course she has to pay the correct stamp duty! That’s not a flex….

Turning to your predictive powers - did you foresee today’s events too? And do you genuinely believe she will ‘survive’ - in your words.

Yes, I think she’ll survive. And you can cut out the rudeness. It’s unnecessary.

Well she says she did!

It would be hilarious if HMRC say she doesn't owe the extra....

It seems to balance on the fact her son is under 18, therefore she is legally responsible for his share of the property, she says she relinquished her share....

Bear in mind, you ve 3 years to sell your other home, to get a refund of the higher SLDT....

I will not take instructions from you - just so there is no future misunderstanding.

HRTQueen · 03/09/2025 17:32

She can not stay on as Deputy, a statement shall be out soon saying something along the lines due to an honest but foolish mistake made and the media attention on myself and my family I have come to the decision that it is best for the party to step down blah blah

Starmer is a man of integrity he will not allow his cabinet to have question over their heads like this

Its just about timing

Janiie · 03/09/2025 17:33

'Yes, I think she’ll survive'

She'll survive yes but think she's blown her PM ambitions and it wouldn't surprise me if starmer is currently working on a replacement. Slim pickings.

So have just caught up on the thread and it seems that AR's fans have moved on from weaponising the fact that she is a working class woman in order to insinuate that anyone criticising her is a bad person, to weaponising the fact that she has a disabled child.

To anyone who isn't blinded by their loyalty to the Labour party, it's just more grubby hypocrisy from politicians.

That’s what they do - it’s their MO.

They quickly switch from defense to offence.

Soooo transparent.

Starmer would rise considerably in my estimation if he were to get rid of Rayner within 24 hours. However, I have my doubts as to whether he has ever been a man of integrity - talk is cheap it seems.

HRTQueen · 03/09/2025 17:35

I think its likely Starmer has been working on a replacement for some time

but yes she has blown her chances (thankfully) of challenging Starmer, that would have been a terrible mistake for Labour, but this is something Labour is known to do

A cynic may suggest that you are not entirely comfortable with the way today’s events have turned out.

I think this story has legs.

Not sure he can actually get rid of her as deputy PM. That was on the Beeb.

Housing minister I think is a different issue.

I would be happy with that. She's proven herself to be utterly incompetent as housing minister anyway - as expected.

I don't think it has great optics.

Somehow being unfit to be housing minister but somehow fit to be Deputy PM.

Of course the big blow up would maybe if she was removed as housing minister but then refused to go as Deputy PM.

I think most people would need a dustbin full of popcorn to get through that one.

Boomer55 · 03/09/2025 17:56

Yes she should. She’s portrayed herself as a normal honest person, there by support the poorest. . Like so many others, she’s just feathering her own nest.

Not a good look for a so called socialist.🙄

I'm not so sure she portrayed herself as a normal honest person, rather a judgemental, intolerant, holier than thou no flies on me type. So it is very hilarious that someone so sniffy about everyone else's misdemeanours didn't get this double and thrice checked. A house in trust for a child, it has all the hallmarks of a tax, not dodge, what did she call it a 'flip'?

PandoraSocks · 03/09/2025 18:22

I am not sure AR will survive this. That may not be a bad thing though, as she will be a very powerful force on the backbenchers.
