To ask how far you can run on a treadmill? And how often you exercise?!

And your age?

I’m 38 and can only manage 2 miles (3km).

I do this three times a week, is this enough?! Starting to worry about fitness as I head towards forty…

I think if you're worried about fitness then incorporate weights training. Retaining muscle is good for your bones. Lift heavy and low reps. There's a great (recent) Zoe podcast episode about it.

BilbaoBaggage · 28/08/2025 22:35

53 and can do at least 10km, but would far rather do it outside. Treadmills are dull.

SomeOfTheTrouble · 28/08/2025 22:38

40 and no idea how far I can run as I despise it. However I weight train 3 times a week, walk the dog for an hour a day, swim for 45 mins once or twice a week and we go on regular long bike rides as a family.

BePinkOrca · 28/08/2025 22:45

5k. Its boring on the treadmill.. do your local park run it’s free and great.. I do that, 2 weighted gym classes and an extra run (5k or two) each week dependent on life. 42 and only just started prioritising my health..

woolflower · 28/08/2025 22:46

I can comfortably run 10km, and by the end of it
I feel I could keep going for at least another 5km. But running isn’t my exercise of choice, and spending more than an hour on a run when I could be doing something I enjoy more is a waste.

9km a week is good for cardiovascular health, but I’d add in some resistance training for bone and muscle health

theriseandfallofFranklinSaint · 28/08/2025 22:58

I'll run 5k in the gym as a warm up or before work if I'm pushed for time.

I exercise a lot, usually 4-5 times a week including cardio and heavy weight lifting. I also have a PT once a week and he pushes me hard...

Not trying to be boasty, just showing why 5k is easy for me as someone who loves the gym.

TheSwarm · 28/08/2025 23:01

Don't get hung up about distance. As long as you are getting your heart rate up you are doing some good. The key thing is consistency and quantity more than anything else.

If you are managing 30 minutes of running 3 times a week you are doing better than most.

user1471548941 · 28/08/2025 23:03

33 and about 18 miles. I run 3 times a week and tend to run a marathon once a year and find the treadmill basically meditative- I put something on to watch on my phone and just zone out. Speed has never been my thing so it’s not fast but turns out stamina is!

Baguettesandcheeseforever · 28/08/2025 23:07

You’ve made a good start. And it’s sensible to build up slowly. You’ve had good advice re introducing weight training. Lifting is great for preserving bone density as you age and also if you incorporate mobility work is a great way to prevent injury.

Im mid 40s and can run 10miles comfortably. I run 4x a week and strength train 3x per week. The strength training has had a significant impact on my running and I’m now running faster than I have for a long time.

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 28/08/2025 23:09

54 and run 30k a week on a treadmill. Sometimes more, usually in either 5 or 10k sessions.
However, I’m a firm believer in you are only competing against yourself and not anyone else.

RonnieMcdonnie · 28/08/2025 23:11

50 and I run 25-30 miles a week over 5 days, rarely on a treadmill though as it’s boring compared to running outside. I do strength training/yoga/swimming on the days I don’t run. Only really started prioritising my fitness in the last few years, it’s much easier when kids have grown up! You are doing more than most people though, agree with the above suggestion of doing parkrun, much more fun than treadmill running.

Beketaten · 28/08/2025 23:12

Try Couch to 5k. I recently completed it, it builds up week by week at a manageable rate. I'm 49.

ChaosDream · 28/08/2025 23:19

I started running last year at 44 - had never done it in my life before. I started with couch to 5k but it took me about a year to actually run 5k!
when I started running outside I found I enjoyed it more and could go for longer. Eventually built up to 10k. Found it hard to find my pace without the treadmill but am getting there now! Will probably go back to the treadmill as it gets colder/darker am will be aiming for 10k hopefully twice a week.

I'm very fit and strong, do weights, HIIT or vinyasa yoga every day and can walk for miles and miles, but I can't run for more than about 500 metres. Hate it, always have. There are other ways to exercise if running isn't doing it for you OP.

PeloMom · 28/08/2025 23:31

I exercise daily but don’t like running 🤣 I do resistance training 4 times a week, play tennis regularly, have a spin bike that I use when the weather is miserable and cold. I also walk a lot.
ETa: late 40s.

About 16 steps TBH.

Only because I find it soooooo boring and much prefer outdoor running where I can do an out 4k. It’s free an’all. Not at all sporty but I love cake so needs must.

BUMCHEESE · 28/08/2025 23:38

This thread is making me realise I really need to start exercising again 😳 at the moment I walk a fair bit but that's it. Mid 40s. I have done running before but similar to you - 3-4k only.

I have found in the past exercising is MUCH easier once I get to a certain fitness level which usually takes about 8 weeks of consistent exercise. It's getting to that point that's the hard bit for me!

Itstheshowgirl · 28/08/2025 23:42

42, I run 5/6k twice a week, can just about manage up to 10 but feel pretty done in afterwards. Weight training three days per week. Only run because I plan on doing some Hyrox events later this year, much prefer weight training and watching YouTube on the stair machine.

Millionsofmonkeys · 28/08/2025 23:45

I could probably run about 200 yards. I do swim 3 times a week and dog walk a brisk 45-60 mins daily.

This is me! I hate running although I did a few 10k races in my 20s. I would never run that distance for fun now. If pushed by DH who regularly runs 5/10k, I can run 2-3km. I do HIIT, Pilates, yoga and weights.

Melancholyflower · 28/08/2025 23:50

How long do you run for to cover the 3km?

MissScarletInTheBallroom · 29/08/2025 05:45

39 and have not run on a treadmill in over 10 years.

I am currently following a half marathon training plan outside though. Supposed to run 10 miles today but I don't think I'll have time so might need to do 5 miles today and swap today's long run to Sunday instead.

ItsHellOrHighwater · 29/08/2025 06:01

I’m 45 and run 10km three times a week, sometimes four times a week.

18 miles on a treadmill blimey!!

To answer OP- 10 km. The ones at gym cut off after an hour and I think I’d get seriously bored anyway (although I do enjoy 30/45 mins). If I’m running outdoors I’d normally do 10 miles ish

Konstantine8364 · 29/08/2025 06:29

I'm 38 and recovering from an injury at the moment. But usually I can run 5k in about 29 mins. Train and run 10k in just under an hour. I did the manc marathon relay earlier this year. I got a horse so Im at the stables every morning and usually exercise 4x a week on top of that. But like many others I don't run on a treadmill. With exercise its more important to find something you enjoy and will stick to. For example I find weight training at the gym soul-destroyingly dull, but I love bouldering so I do that. Im also ok with circuits as its changing all the time and lots of cardio too. I've recently done some reformer pilates sessions and really enjoying those too. For me I need variety so a typical week would be 1x 5k run, 1x lake swim, 1x bouldering and 1x circuits class.
