To ask how far you can run on a treadmill? And how often you exercise?!

And your age?

I’m 38 and can only manage 2 miles (3km).

I do this three times a week, is this enough?! Starting to worry about fitness as I head towards forty…

I agree @Purpleheatherrain but it seems to appeal to a lot of folk! I’m always baffled that nearly every treadmill in the gym will be in use when it’s really nice weather outside. Even if I wanted to run and then do weights I’d rather do a run round the block from the gym and then head indoors. But each to their own I guess and they can serve a purpose in winter or for folk who don’t live in places they feel safe running outside, particularly at night or in the dark.

I pay a subscription to be there and if I'm already there for Aqua Aerobics I can combine the two. I can't walk more than a few yards outside due to mobility issues but I can walk on the treadmill for a bit. Perhaps it's because I have the sides to lean on and my posture is different.

LessOfThis · 29/08/2025 12:19

I struggle to run more than a mile and a half on the treadmill as its boring as fuck. But I do find that a couple of treadmill sessions helps my speed on proper runs outside.

SingingintheRadiator · 29/08/2025 12:20

I can do about 10 miles, but I rarely do because I get so bored after a few minutes on a treadmill. Much prefer outdoor running.

I struggle to run in spring day time temps, it makes me feel ill above about 14 degrees. So the gym helps me fit in exercise when it suits me. Plus I like to swim a couple of times a week so I already have the membership!

Ihateboris · 29/08/2025 12:26

I'm 54 and run between 6 and 8 miles everyday on the treadmill. I much prefer running outside but the constant abuse from wankers has put a stop to that. The last such incident was having a can of beer thrown at me.
I listen to LBC whilst running so it's not too boring.
I also do a mixture of pilates, callanetics and Tracy Anderson workouts for toning.

Been working out regularly since I was 20.

MiddleAgedDread · 29/08/2025 12:37

how cold is your gym @LessOfThis ??

ilovesooty · 29/08/2025 12:41

I watch TV on mute with subtitles while I'm on the treadmill and bike.

bloodredfeaturewall · 29/08/2025 12:42

on a treadmill I can do 5 min before I get too bored. however outside I can easily do an hour.

RedPony1 · 29/08/2025 12:46

Even when i was a fit marathon runner i couldn't run on a treadmill - because i simply cannot run in a straight line 😂even if i power walk on one, i have to hold on to keep me straight... don't ask, i don't know! I'm super balanced on a horse!

when i was a run leader, i would oversee the beginners group and so many new starters would say "How can i run 5km easily on a treadmill but die running 1mile outside?!" treadmill is so much easier on the body than outdoor running, was always an interesting one.

I'm very fit and strong, do weights, HIIT or vinyasa yoga every day and can walk for miles and miles, but I can't run for more than about 500 metres. Hate it, always have. There are other ways to exercise if running isn't doing it for you OP.

Yeah i dont do running bad for your knees and everyone i know who runs is alwahs complaining sbout their knees, other ways to improve your cardio like cycling.

KPPlumbing · 29/08/2025 12:47

I'm 41 and can run half marathons outside, and could go for hours on a treadmill (I'd just die of boredom). I do cross fit and hyrox too, which include masses of running, rowing and cycling. And I lift weights a couple of times a week.

stargirl27 · 29/08/2025 12:48

I can do about 20km max. Not running at the mo due to injury though! I work out about 5-6 times a week

Agree about the knees, though I hate cycling too. Any kind of endurance cardio doesn't seem to agree with me at all. I actually suspect I have some kind of pulmonary or heart issue, but I don't want to pull on that thread so have never had it investigated.

I love yoga though, and do quite intense practices where my heart rate is up for at least 20-30 minutes. I also walk the dogs up a hill for an hour every day. I'm just not built for running.

Rosti1981 · 29/08/2025 13:14

I was a runner in my 20s, then stopped mostly for just over a decade (babies and young children), now am getting back into it slowly.
I now run about 15 miles per week spread over 3 or 4 sessions, but not on a treadmill. I run with my running club (new to me and very inclusive and welcoming to all abilities) doing social runs, parkrun, and some interval training sessions. I only really use the treadmill at the moment for hill or speed intervals. C25K and parkrun are great as others have mentioned. But it's the running club and community that is key for me.

Strokethefurrywall · 29/08/2025 14:11

45, max run is 10k on a treadmill but longer outside. Agree with everyone here. Treadmill running is a gap filler for when recovering from injury or it’s pissing down with rain outside.
But I don’t love running as much as I love boxing training and conditioning. Running supports that but isn’t my main thing.

KelsCommemorativeSausage · 29/08/2025 14:14

Never been on a treadmill and I don't intend to. I can run if I have to, without getting out of breath, but no idea how far.

I walk ten miles+ a day when I'm at work, a little less on weekends, and at work I'm lifting and carrying all day so that's my weights. I sometimes swim.
I've no interest in sports or any other exercise at all.

Worldgonecrazy · 29/08/2025 14:26

Late 50s

On a treadmill- 2k, because I hit my boredom threshold. In the ‘real world’ I run 6 - 7 k with a lot of hills.

I do functional fitness /strength training four times a week.

I didn’t start exercising until my mid 40s.

OldieButBaddie · 29/08/2025 14:29

I can't run any more as my knees were starting to hurt, so I now row and cycle, both of which I love (outdoor not in the gym)

My physio said to me if I wanted to keep walking (we do a lot of walking) into my late years then I should not keep running when I was about 53, I am now 58 and way fitter than when I was running!

AtlanticStar · 29/08/2025 14:29

2 - 3 miles. If I'm a bit tired I'll walk/run. I find with running you can build endurance quite quickly. Also do swimming and yoga. Aged over 60.

LeaderBee · 29/08/2025 14:37

I'm 39.

I'm doing it more for general fitness than to loose weight but I do 20 minutes a day at about 4kph, which i think works out at just under a mile? I could do more but i'm not quite up to 40 minutes yet ( about 2 episodes of a show I have on while I do it) so i can't really stop halfway through the second episode 😂

I haven't changed my diet and i'm not calorie counting.
After a couple of months I have noticed that I CAN do my belt one hole tighter!

@Ihateboris I'm curious. Where do you run to be getting "constant abuse"?

RandomUsernameHere · 29/08/2025 14:57

I could run all day (I’m 39). Outdoors not on a treadmill though.

WickedElpheba · 29/08/2025 14:59

Well you should be able to run longer / faster if you've been doing it for a while
