That's clearly not the best or kindest reply. I know the OP is still being oversensitive, but she doesn't deserve to be treated like that.

Calliopespa · 28/08/2025 22:37

IMO some of the best photography captures character. With places that might not be the full vista, and with people it might not be staring full-face on at the camera and smiling a rictus photo smile like those things you pay for at portrait sittings.

A place I love was captured by a friend of mine by a shot of a garden table and chairs with the remains of a lunch and with early autumn leaves on the ground around it. It immediately makes me remember how it feels to be there - but she was very clear about the late-summer moment she was trying to preserve. It doesn't need to show the whole story in order to tell it. It just needs atmosphere and I think that is a bit lacking in some of the examples you have posted. But I think if you start with what you want to capture rather than thinking what would make a good phot - if that makes any sense at all?

But I really like the actual effect you are achieving with the camera. At the risk of sounding naff, let your heart lead not your head and I genuinely think you are onto something.

LizaRadleywasonthespectrum · 28/08/2025 22:39

At the moment they are not good sorry. No point in fannying around BUT you want to be a photographer and the only way you are going to improve is by taking more pics. Do you have a natural eye, no I don’t think you do but you can learn to be a good photographer. The best camera for you is your phone. Start following accounts on Instagram to get ideas on composition, perspective and subject. You Tube is also great. You will have fun with your phone I promise. Forget the camera for now and practise with your phone camera. Don’t forget a minute think you cannot get good results with a phone. Look

Mmm, you seem a bit over sensitive? I wonder what you expected posting them on a public forum?

Getting good at something takes perseverance and learning from others/critical appraisal. Then using the advice to hone your skills. They’re just average photo’s at the moment but join a club or course and you could pick up techniques/experience that could help you.

See average is fine.

it’s the multitude of people who have come along and just been downright nasty because they’re feeling a little miserable tonight that I have the issue with

People think that art - any sort of art, be that music, drawing, painting and photography is all about talent, and that certain people have a deity-given ability.

Which is utter shite.

Being good at anything is about hard work. You put the hours in, you get better. Everyone is shit at something that requires skill and hard work to start with. You can either put the effort in to learn and to improve, or give up before you waste too much time and money. It's that simple.

Take classes, read books, watch videos and get out there and take pictures. Or don't, but you aren't going to learn by posting a few mediocre pictures on mumsnet and getting upset when people don't rave about them.

I do have some more that I do genuinely like from my camera, so here they are- it’s a genuinely gorgeous camera

(I’m sure these will take another age to pull through - they’re not rude I promise!)

So long as there isn't a nude, gilded eunuch as that other poster suggested ...

lulunanda · 28/08/2025 22:43

I think the photos are absolutely stunning. But I am biased because they are taken in my beautiful town!

I really do think they are lovely. There is lots of photography support in our area so I think joining local groups would be good, and offer LOTs of opportunities to improve.

We live in such a beautiful part of the world. Absolute amateurs (like myself) happily snap photos away as we go on dog walks. Why are you beating yourself up so much for having a good go at something other people don’t think twice about? Is this something you tend to do to yourself in other areas of your life? Therapy may help you to unpack this.

Please don’t feel down OP, youve just made my evening seeing our beautiful home being represented. 🌊

That's MN.

And bitter people love nothing more than tearing into a poster who displays a bit of vulnerability. You put your shots out there hopefully so they couldn't help themselves.

It's possible but your example looks filtered / colour-enhanced to buggery. Your phone may be doing this automatically, kind of like auto tune for singers.

There’s constructive criticism and then certain posters who are being nasty to get a kick out of it.

For example @LizaRadleywasonthespectrumyour photo isn’t to my taste, you can see from the pictures I’ve posted that I prefer my colours more muted.

that’s a fair comment.

if I were to turn around and say it’s shit, your camera must be broken, you should just give up - totally different ball game.

LizaRadleywasonthespectrum · 28/08/2025 22:48

I’@IllBeLookingAtTheMoon of course it is, it’s still a good picture, good enough to win a competition. I’m pretty sure if Op could do that on her phone she’d be happy she’d taken a good pic.

It’s such a lovely place - I do love photographing the harbour!

Please keep at it, at the end of the day it’s not harming anybody. It brings you joy and part of the journey is improving every day. Like others my favourite shot was the yellow house, the colour contrast is so lovely. Sometimes when I’m walking by the harbour I feel like we live in Balamory!

I can feel the real connection here. These are great photos. I am a sucker for black and white. The bulbs are my favourite.

I do think b&w is where it really comes into its own, I spent two hours in my dad’s shed photographing every nook and cranny because I felt like it represented him so well. But I don’t want to just shoot in black and white 😭

Love some of these ones.

Scene is atmospheric
The tree inside the building is quirky
The last 3 suit black and white - i like the close up detail of the last 2.

Its striking but this is where taste comes in. I wouldn't display it because I find the colours garish.

All mine! The black and white indoors ones are from my dad’s shed, the outdoor one is a local pier, and the two colour ones are a trip to London, which were definitely not very intentionally shot!
