To ask if landlords can still ask for rent in advance?

There seems to be conflicting guidance online.
So for example can a landlord ask for 6 months' rent in advance for someone who for example doesn't have a guarantor? Or is this no longer allowed, does anyone know?

No, they can't. But if you want property, you could offer.

You aren't competing with the landlord, you're competing with people who might want the property more then you, and are prepared to pay for it.

Isn't the Renters Rights Bill great!

It just wrecked the rental market and made most property unaffordable. But hey ho!, it's great to know that you can't be asked to leave the rental you don't have, because the Bill made it unaffordable.
