To wonder why someone would design a card like this?

It was the last word that caught my eye and I thought “okay, maybe the spacing is meant to be there, but it’s badly designed”.

Then I realised the rest of it’s a mess!

My grammar is far from perfect, but it’s not my job to design cards.

Is it meant to be terrible, do you think?

It definitely looks like alot. It would annoy me.

Didimum · 26/08/2025 17:51

Typographical design isn’t meant to be grammatically correct. ‘Alot’ is a common misspelling, but hardly anything to get worked up about.

FourEyesGood · 26/08/2025 17:54

Awful!

Tay596 · 26/08/2025 17:55

Our secondary school English teacher used to go mental because so many of us would write alot. I used to think it should be a word but now it looks really wrong to me.

theserpentine · 26/08/2025 20:09

I’m not completely alone. That’s all I needed to know Grin

Yes, I thought it was 'alot' until we were told in Year 7 that it wasn't.

Mind you that teacher also said I had spelt 'weird' wrong, and pronounced 'clerk' as in rhyming with 'irk'.

Is that not how you say clerk 🙈

ETA now I’ve said Clark out loud it’s definitely that so ignore me

Not in my world anyway. Clerk (as in clerk to governors at school) is pronounced 'clark'.

I hate thankyou more than I hate alot. But yes, very irritating.

TaborlinTheGreat · 26/08/2025 20:32

Ridiculous! If you design greetings cards for a living, spelling the words on the front correctly is a pretty basic requirement. I understand that lots of people find spelling hard, but come on... if it's your job, you check.

I agree. Greeting card industry is massive.

theserpentine · 26/08/2025 20:43

I did also mention it being someone’s job, but this obviously isn’t a mistake.

But I am baffled as to why any retailer would think intentional spelling and grammar mistakes is appealing.

I actually thought alot was a correct spelling …. 😅

StrikeandRobinlol · 26/08/2025 20:46

Tbf cards can just say what people would write, not necessarily what is grammatically correct

You’re absolutely right. Pronouncing it clirk in my head somehow sounded a lot closer to Clark then when I said it out loud 😂
