To think it’s polite not to pass wind/fart around people, including spouses?

Me and my Dsis are having a debate since I, have mentioned that me nor DH tend to pass wind around eachother and never have. We’ve been together 11 years and have two kids. We’re very comfortable with eachother and he’s definitely heard me do it because I strictly remember one Halloween he was passing me decorations to put up and my heavily pregnant body just couldn’t hold it in 🤣

but Dsis thinks we’re weird and it’s weird for a couple not to fart around eachother. I personally think it’s just polite not to if you don’t absolutely need to, you can excuse yourself from the room/area. Maybe it’s because I used to get really annoyed at an ex who would fart constantly and they would smell absolutely foul and would make me feel physically ill. But I just wouldn’t want to make someone smell my gas 🤣

AIBU to think it’s not that weird to just not fart around your spouses?!🤣

My DH was my fourth long term relationship and the first man to fart in front of me. I hated it but thankfully it stopped when our DCs became teens, as they started to voice their disapproval too!

Farting is like one step removed from a poo, and I don’t think anyone does that in front of their partner!

Farting and pooing are quite different, though they can come along together, sometimes unexpectedly. ✌️

Moveoverdarlin · 25/08/2025 22:26

There is no way I couldn’t fart in front of my DH. If I don’t fart I’m extremely uncomfortable. If I left the room to do it I’d be up and down like a yo-yo.

We called them fluffs, or blowing off.

I like seeing suggestions of what to say after doing one.... 'that is going to itch when it dries'... or 'a bit less choke next time' Grin

Ha ha me too.

I can't help it as I have bowel disease. My DH will go to another room, though.

Whatisgoingonhere · 25/08/2025 22:30

We’re like tooting trumpets around each other 🤷‍♀️

One of the many joys of being single is the ability to nonchalantly fart to your heart's content. Any time, any place, anywhere.

You know when you’ve met ‘the one’ when you can nonchalantly fart in front of him with sheer abandon.

I genuinely believe that. I’m 100 percent comfortable in front of my DH and it wouldn’t cross my mind to hold in a fart.

What if it's a stinker though? Surely you wouldn't want to inflict that on anyone, nor theirs on you?

SuperBlondie28 · 25/08/2025 22:35

My hubby is loud and proud 😂 but strangely unsmelly... He blames our cat usually..

PumpkinSparkleFairy · 25/08/2025 22:37

People who “choose not to” fart 😂😂😂

They are all stinkers. Absolutely eye watering. To be honest if I get a reaction like ‘Jesus Christ, you stink!’ It makes me howl laughing.

In real life I’m a very lady-like person believe it or not. I would never ever ever fart in front of anyone else and I consider myself a very polite person. It’s just at home I let it out, so to speak.

Always blame the chair.

Sage advice.

I have been with my partner for 16 years and we dont do it in front of each other. Some people think we are uptight, I think it's a mutual respect.

I'd never see my husband if I didn't fart in front of him. I am a very windy person!

Oh my dad makes lots of 'noises' because he had surgery for his colon... I am so using the duck line on him next time I see him! 🦆🦆🦆🦆🦆🦆🦆

Yep. I remember seeing a guy and I absolutely couldn't feel like I could fart in front of him. My tummy was is agony. I would wake up and try and fart silently in the night but it was just too sore to hold on all of the time..

So he had to go!

PurpleChrayn · 25/08/2025 22:40

YABU.

A woman died because she held her farts in in front of her boyfriend.

Sunshineismyfavourite · 25/08/2025 22:42

I hate the 'comical' fart then put your partners head under the duvet stuff - absolutely not for me. As a mature lady and one who takes an oestrogen hormone blocker due to BC unfortunately I do fart on a fairly regular occasion in front of my husband. Not in a deliberate way but it just happens! Bending over, getting up from a chair, reaching up into a cupboard. Not the sexiest moment in the day but there's nothing I can do about it! I daren't do yoga anymore either 😅

Pigriver · 25/08/2025 22:44

I always prefer not to do it or hear others do it. You can't always help it and it's no big deal but I feel once it's open season where does it end? Shitting with the door open?!
DH seems incapable of doing it quietly and to be honest it makes me feel a bit disgusted.
We are a pretty open family but I do feel like there needs to be some boundaries. We have 2 boys so I fear I'll be woefully outnumbered and subjected to endless stinky farts if I ease up!

Idontknowhatnametochoose · 25/08/2025 22:44

I dont like farting in front of anyone. I think its because I was brought up in a very uptight family. I used to feel embarrassed if I silently let out a silent one in front of my mum. I'm single luckily so I can fart as freely as I like but when I've been coupled up I dont like farting in front of him and vice versa.

DreamyBalonz · 25/08/2025 21:11

I thought it would be funny to fart in bed when I had only been with my husband about 4 weeks. Unfortunately I had a sickness bug and shat myself

Oh, that really made me laugh, so much!
I wish we still had the laugh emoji...

Babybirdmum · 25/08/2025 22:59

My rule is if you live together you can fart around each other but if you don’t then it’s not polite. I wouldn’t go mad if someone did it in front of me, but I don’t like it. my BIL once trumped around me and I found it off-putting. I’d never fart in front of him

HeronPond · 25/08/2025 23:01

oviraptor21 · 25/08/2025 22:04

What I don't understand is why so many people are farting all the time. Most days I don't fart at all. Nor do other people fart around me thankfully. I'd be leaving the room if they did.

Yes, this. I mean, it’s not something I do a whole lot. Might it be diet-related? I’m vegetarian.

Thedoorisalwaysopen · 25/08/2025 23:02

I don't fart in front of my other half on purpose and nor does he (although I won't lie we both laugh at farts and fart humour). If one slips out by accident it's a case of 'excuse me' and move on.
Last week I got a sudden attack of reflux and made a noise like a tree frog after eating, and OH said 'more tea vicar', and I laughed so hard I ended up farting, which of course made it worse.

It's health related in some cases too.

DiscoBob · 25/08/2025 23:09

Neither of us fart very often but I'm not sure if that's intended or just fortunate. I tend to burp a lot though in front of him. So maybe that's why there's not much coming out the other end?!

Sure. I have friends with IBS and similar. But surely all the frequent farters on this thread can’t have a medical condition?
