I nearly threw up when I saw it this morning - what a horrible shock.

It's a very small town in the Midlands near a city. Yes it's ex-mining but does reasonable ok now, not deprived eg no contextual offers for my dc for uni, but not massively desirable or trendy. Has a Labour MP now but hasn't always in recent years. Voted for Brexit but only just. In 2019 more people voted against Tories AND Brexit than for them - split the vote so we still got a Tory, but still.

In other words, I did not expect this. It's horrible - looks ugly and badly done even before you get started on the thinking behind it. AIBU to ring the council on Tuesday and ask when they are going to deal with this vandalism?

I did a four hour round-trip on the motorway today too and the amount of flags on bridges was shocking - just make it stop.

Well I saw two of these patriots racially abusing a women and child while he was painting it yesterday.

So maybe it’s not just about loving our country and its values…

Covidwoes · 25/08/2025 06:45

FFS, all the posters who think these flags are due to patriotism need to wake up! If that’s the case, why haven’t the flags been there for years? Explain that one!

Racist connotations to the English flag... in England?

If they are being funded and put up by racists, they do have racist connotations.

BettysRoasties · 24/08/2025 21:26

You nearly threw up because someone painted a flag.

You should maybe seek some kind of mental health help because that’s not a normal reaction at all.

Also pretty much every other country displays and flys their flag with pride but the second it’s England we best fetch the smelling salts and clutch our pearls.

That’s because only far right groups display the flag. They’ve taken it over! Where else do you see flags displayed?!

sandwichlover93 · 25/08/2025 07:03

Climbingrosexx · 25/08/2025 01:00

For the majority of people it isn't about colour it's about being English / British and you should be allowed to be proud of that, whatever colour you are without being called racist.

It’s more nuanced than that though - it’s not about true patriotism, it’s about exceptionalism, racism and xenophobia.

Someone saying 'Enoch Powell was right' is normally pretty clear proof that the person is an out and proud racist.

Your views disgust me.

God - English people always have to play the victims, don't they?

So what's your nationality? Are you English, British?

wandererofthekingdom · 25/08/2025 07:12

Every single roundabout in our small market town has been painted. It looks a bit naff especially where the lines aren’t straight. I certainly haven’t felt ill from it though!!

Teaandtoastserveddaily · 25/08/2025 07:18

I would rather see the St George flag than palestine or 'trans pride' (AKA disgusting mysoginist) ones everywhere.

In other countries e.g. Italy the people are proud of their country and its heritage. For some reason in England we arent allowed to be and people are rightly fucking sick of it.

SociableAtWork · 25/08/2025 07:19

Almost threw up - you must really struggle during the footie World Cup and Euros then.

I almost threw up when I read that a 15 year old girl was raped by an illegal immigrant.

SatsumaDog · 25/08/2025 07:19

It’s undeniable that racism is coming to the forefront more in recent months, although it’s always been there.

However, nothing will change until we tackle the root cause which isn’t racism, it’s fear. Fear stemming from a perceived competition for resources and a lack of control over their immediate environment. Until the government addresses that, it will only get worse. People need to know the government has some control over the situation. At the moment people have no faith in their leader who to them is putting the interests of his own electorate at the end of the queue. Whether that is true or not doesn’t matter, that is the public perception.

Neemie · 25/08/2025 07:20

I have never gone in for flag waving or badge wearing to promote causes but it is popular, so people will do it. Currently it is England, Ukraine, Palestine and pride flags all over the place. I did think that painting pride level crossings in London was a very poor decision and they have probably created a bit of a monster with that one.

BlankBlankBlank14 · 25/08/2025 07:22

Oh yeah we’ve got a load of “patriots” painting bloody red scrawl on the zebra crossings in town. They’re either doing it while drunk because they look like they’ve been painted by a demented sheep.

These will no doubt be the people complaining about the pride crossings, one of which was in our town, done professionally and nicely. That cost too much money of course, they should be allowed to just daub red paint everywhere and call it “patriotic”.

Low life vandals, who encourage their children to be vandals as well.

Thank god the flag isn’t more than a Red Cross, because that at least means it’ll hopefully fade soon. Imagine that lot trying the Welsh Flag!

CRD67 · 25/08/2025 07:40

Liesmorelies · 24/08/2025 22:01

To clarify - I'm not English, I'm Welsh but have lived in England most of my life. I consider myself British first and then Welsh a very close second. My ex is English so my children are (mainly!) as are most of my friends - obviously!

But yes, English people do have a tendency to victimhood in relation to matters like this, not to mention missing the point. Look at the people on this thread asking whether I object to the Ukrainian or Palestinian flags being flown. Do they honestly think 'the English' are suffering like people in Ukraine or Palestine right now? Can they not see the difference in attitude between people wanting to show support for these war-torn countries and people following the orders show that England is for the English? Really?

If you don't like England go can always go back to Wales. There you'll find your Welsh identity stamped on every road sign but you won't consider that being proud of your country aka patriotic but it is.

BettyBobble · 24/08/2025 21:28

I think I'd quite like it. A nod to St George in England? How wonderful 👍

St George the Turk (I think he was) ....

I marginally support the pride cause more but I think painting the road for any cause is incredibly stupid and obviously sets a precedent.

St George was Turkish

Oh God not again. So what? St Andrew wasn't born in Scotland and.never set foot in Scotland either. Apparently Turkey didn't even exist when he was born.

It's funny you should mention Ireland. When I went to NI to Belfast, one of the most striking things I saw, which I hadn't known about before, was the lampposts painted with the union flag or the Irish Tricolour, depending on the area. It was interesting but also shocking to realise that areas had to marked and defined in in that way. It's not exactly a positive step that we are taking. Certainly the guide we had in Belfast didn't really speak with pride of the painted lampposts.

Flags are and sadly always will be a contentious issue here in NI. The protests and riots in 2012 over the union flag were an awful time. The flying of the "Soldier F" flag in support of a soldier who killed 2 civilians sickens me OP, so I understand that feeling in your stomach being caused by a flag. I don't know enough about the st george flag or the issues surrounding it to comment, but if the people painting them are anything like the protectors here at that time they aren't going to go away easily.

ACynicalDad · 25/08/2025 07:51

It’s another symptom of the same thing Brexit was. People feeling the government doesn’t have their back. That society isn’t working for them. The Labour Party has been captured by the Islington lovies who care more about their woke priorities than the priorities of voters they take for granted. They need to focus on education and opportunities, the exam results of working class white boys in particular have been shameful, so they work well. I won’t vote Reform but I understand why many will give it a chance.
