I nearly threw up when I saw it this morning - what a horrible shock.

It's a very small town in the Midlands near a city. Yes it's ex-mining but does reasonable ok now, not deprived eg no contextual offers for my dc for uni, but not massively desirable or trendy. Has a Labour MP now but hasn't always in recent years. Voted for Brexit but only just. In 2019 more people voted against Tories AND Brexit than for them - split the vote so we still got a Tory, but still.

In other words, I did not expect this. It's horrible - looks ugly and badly done even before you get started on the thinking behind it. AIBU to ring the council on Tuesday and ask when they are going to deal with this vandalism?

I did a four hour round-trip on the motorway today too and the amount of flags on bridges was shocking - just make it stop.

I don't understand how some MNers function in their everyday life. Who the hell "nearly throws up" from the "devastation" and "horrible shock" of seeing a flag? Why does MN attract so many women who "go NC" with family members at the drop of a hat, and "grieve" if it rains while they're on holiday abroad?

Edited

I am a holiday rain griever. Just give me sun on my summer holiday! Truly can’t think of much worse, might as well cancel the holiday. Thanks for lumping us in with the flagophobics and NCers 😂

They are the human equivalent of dogs that piss up lamp posts to mark their territory.

Exactly! What English pride is being displayed there ffs with crudely spray painting red crosses on roundabouts, even zebra crossings.

It’s hardly Pearl clutching is it? It makes the areas look awful. We’re not talking about bunting or flags placed by happy people 🙄

It’s happening now because it’s the start of the women’s rugby World Cup which is being hosted by England. The flags are to show support for the team.

ugh. So tacky. If people want to fly the flag then they can do it on their own property although quite frankly, we all know this is not about being patriotic. If it was, they’d have been flying them for years.

As long as the rules are consistent, I agree. So also no Pride flags, Ukraine flags, Palestine flags etc. We can’t have different rules for different people just when it suits, can we.

They cannot function as they have high-earning husbands who keep them. I am surprised the OP is not 'shaking and crying'!!!!!

I love a flag, I work for the MoD, there is very often Union Jack bunting up outside my house! I go to the local Proms on the Park & happily wave my flag!

This isn’t that! This is fuelled by bloody Yaxley Lennon & his mob!
Operation Raise the Colours!

I actually took my VE Day bunting down on Friday - just incase anyone thought I was part of this!

I’m pretty left wing and I know it’s popular to be embarrassed about being English but I’m just not - there’s a lot to like about England as imperfect as it is. I think people have become jaded by the constant jibes on social media about “ colonizer” etc and it’s driving regular people further and further right. My town has spouted a series of flags that have been attached to lamp posts on the way into our town. I haven’t seen any painted roundabouts. I don’t feel the need to fly it but also don’t have a problem with it flying. It needs to be flown by normal “ middle of the road” people to take away the association with the far right. Every time a person makes a jibe about people being thick or stupid because they have a sense of pride in their country it pushes those people further away from where I personally think we should be. I’d like to get to the position where we can display a flag and it be as unremarkable as any of the places abroad I’ve visited. Forget the flag fliers there are posters here who make me embarrassed to be left leaning.

Excellent post. ^ Very well articulated. Finally, a sensible post from someone on 'the left.' Mind you, you are 'left leaning' and not 'far left... Shame the far left on here spoil it for everyone else who is left leaning...' As of course, many left leaning folk are fine, it's just the far left (extremists) who are hard work!

And on that note, I have to go to bed as I have an early start tomorrow! Shame, as I was enjoying myself. Grin

They are not just proud of their country, they are proud of being white. There's the problem.

Em why is it a problem to be proud of being white

I’m brown and proud to be brown
so why can’t a white person be proud to be white

Stringagal · 24/08/2025 23:16

My neighbour has put a Union Jack up, thought it strange as they are originally Polish and Canadian.

By the by but the Union Jack (or Union Flag before someone nitpicks) is a beautiful flag. I hope that’s not getting tarred with the same brush as the England St George’s flag.

St George, ironically, was Turkish.

godlikeAI · 24/08/2025 23:17

I totally agree. Yes, flags can be nice when hung from public building or in celebration. This is not that. I wish people would stop pretending it’s all rather jolly. It’s deliberately being done to try and intimidate. And flags flying part way up lap posts because that’s as far as the idiots’ ladders will reach just looks bloody awful, never mind a wonky red cross on a roundabout. It’s just horrible vandalism. Where I live, they’ve painted a zebra crossing and all the little dotted lines alongside it as well. Total mess - I also almost threw up, quite frankly. Horrible

JudgeJ · 24/08/2025 23:17

we all know this is not about being patriotic.

A blatant lie, 'we all' don't allow others to infect our minds as so many on here do to suit their agenda. We have lots of flags flying around here including the Hamas supporters club flag'
For the dimmer people on here, the World Cup is talking place, I don't recall anyone complaining when the Lionesses won and there were flags everywhere.

If the Labour luvvies want to ban the England flag then they need to ban the rest, the Ukrainian flag as well or they are guilty of discrimination, tho as it against the English it's no doubt acceptable.

This sort of hyperbole you mean?

Across the country, many of the small groups that have come together to raise the flags are being organised by well-known far-right extremists. The group in Nottingham, for example, is headed by another of Lennon’s associates, Guramit Singh. Having been a key member of EDL from the early days, Singh now runs the Predator Hunter series for Lennon’s media outlet Urban Scoop media. The only break in his longrunning activism came due to a spell in prisonafter Singh and two accomplices tied up a shop assistant and threatened to slash his throat in an attempted robbery at a hydroponic shop in Hucknall, Notts.

Yup I'm amazed they're still at it thought with the bank holiday there'd be plenty of footie or bbq beers to distract these knuckledraggers

Classism. Most people here throwing up over flags might consider themselves lefties of some variety down stream of socialism ( of some variety) so why
A lack of class awareness.

You don't have to agree with others views but why is there no broad understanding from people who consider themselves educated ( and look down on people as 'thick') that the working classes community and areas have disproportionately been shafted by the government since the 80's

They haven't had the 'Upwood mobility' promised by Blair and consequently have suffered, economically and mentally.

Over the last 15 years the uptake in immigration has been concentrated in these poorer areas.
until a recent and deblierate central gov initiative seeing most areas diversified.

Why is it always uppermiddle class people looking down on others and then making it aahem ' black and white '. A comfortable paradym you can swallow? The issue is complex there isn't a right or wrong 'side' but why can't you understand people having different experiences and sometimes is this broad experience there could be issues that you personally wouldn't have to consider but might be real for others? And maybe vise versa.

But the smug self satisfaction and believing to be morally superior, ' get me flag for that

Is it the same village as mine? Very close to a petrol station?

I felt the same when I saw it. They can’t even paint straight lines, it would be laughable if it wasn’t so depressing.

Unfortunately, some people who are proud of being white, by default, think that other colours are inferior.

🙌🏻
one thing I keep noticing is the OPs of posts like these, as I noted one earlier, “I’m educated” / “I’m left leaning” / “I’m considerate” or even in this one “town is ok, not deprived” as if the only people these posters genuinely believe are doing this, or think like this, are uneducated, inconsiderate, right wing louts from disadvantaged areas.
im sorry, but you and the news can’t spin that characterisation anymore as it’s not going to wash.

if anything, its increasing a further void within the fabric of society.

healthyteeth · 24/08/2025 23:21

EvangelicalAboutButteredToast · 24/08/2025 23:09

I don’t think you understand. Many many many ordinary people AGREE WITH THEM. They’re not prepared to go out on the streets over it as they are relying on working class people to do that but you are burying your head in the sand if you honestly think the majority of people aren’t nodding along with a lot of it.

Oh I do know that many ‘ordinary people’ agree with this and that is what is so worrying This ripple of right wing sentiment through England is sickening. This isn’t ’patriotism’.

And these ‘ordinary people’ cannot see how they’ve been hoodwinked into believing that the immigrant is the root of all their problems. By the press. By social media. By right wing racists. By sneaky politicians. The immigrant as scapegoat. It’s a story as old as time.

They don’t realise they have been distracted from the real root of the problems in England.

In times of economic uncertainty people always look for someone to blame for their hardship. They look for simple easy to understand answers. Look to history for examples of this.
