MIL has an XL Bully at her house, AIBU to say baby can never visit while the dog is on the property even if shut in a different room or garden?

Ok. 😬 it’s not but whatever makes you happy.

It's a fact. 💁🏻‍♀️

What is an xl bully?

An XL Bully is a type of American Bully, a breed of dog that’s known for its muscular build, stocky frame, and friendly personality. "XL" refers to the larger size within the American Bully breed. While there are various categories of American Bullies, the XL Bully stands out due to its impressive stature, typically weighing between 90 and 120 pounds (or more), with a height of around 20 to 23 inches at the shoulder.
Despite their intimidating appearance, XL Bullies are often known for being affectionate, loyal, and good with families. They can make excellent pets, especially for owners who have experience with large, strong dogs and are committed to providing proper training and socialization. However, like any large breed, they require consistent exercise, attention, and positive reinforcement to thrive.

Chatgpt - but it’s not a breed it’s a set of measurements.

CarGirlStar · 23/08/2025 18:00

I have a 6kg fluffy mongrel who doesn’t nothing but sleep all day and even I wouldn’t allow dog and baby/toddler to be roaming around together. It’s not worth the risk.

MySaintedAunt · 23/08/2025 18:00

No, you're not BU, and your MIL is a twat frankly for owning one.

I've had - currently have - several dogs, inc rescue and reactive/loony tunes, I love dogs and am rarely wary around them. I also recognise that all dogs can bite, and no dog is bomb proof - illness, injury, stress etc can all potentially make a placid, well cared for dog 'turn'. BUT the sheer size and weigth of XLs, combined with their ability to turn for absolutely fuck all reason meaning even the most experienced dog people don't always see an attack coming, puts them in the 'oh, i think not' category for me.
They are responsible for the highest number of adult fatalities (iirc, happy to be corrected) so just think what one could do to a tiny child - and you would have no chance of stopping it.

What is an xl bully?

Have you not seen all the reports about them killing hundreds of people?
they are an extremely large, powerful dog that cannot be stopped by grown men when they attack, attacks are mostly always fatal and as is the fashion these days they are a Frankenstein breed from different dogs.

Sodastreamin · 23/08/2025 18:03

BeardieWeirdie · 23/08/2025 14:17

MIL will think you’re being silly, the problem is bad owners not bad dogs, and her little Toto would never do anything - he loves children. If you did ever let your child over, she’d ‘accidentally’ leave the door open just to prove her point. YANBU at all.

I'm sick to death of uneducated unqualified people saying "But, but it's the owners, it's the owners!" when DOCTORS of Veterinary Science have proven beyond any comprehensible doubt that this behaviour exists within their DNA! 🙄 Just like Labs make the best Guide Dogs and Collies make the best Sheep dogs.
Dogs have behavioural tendencies within their DNA > this is a proven fact. Proven.

SaltAirAndTheRust · 23/08/2025 18:05

YANBU. Pit bull type dogs are bred to be muscular and powerful and to latch on and keep attacking no matter what. There have been cases of them being stabbed and even shot, and being able to continue in their attack due to the instincts bred into them.

Hundreds?

How are we defining these dogs? The way they look? How tall they are?

ERthree · 23/08/2025 18:13

You can't turn the clock back if something happens so don't put your baby in danger. If she wants to see the baby she has to visit you. always.

CrispsinaBowl · 23/08/2025 18:16

Would you be there with the baby? Or would your partner be there?
Is she a responsible dog owner?

See the answers to these questions wouldn't make a difference to me. It would still be a solid no.

I’m afraid you have just had a run in with a bully and staffy apologist! 🤷‍♀️
personally if I was going to keep a giant man killer in my house I would go for a tiger much more attractive!

FollowSpot · 23/08/2025 18:17

So what if the dog is registered and she complies with the law? The legislation covers them being muzzled and on lead in public areas.

Not in their own home.

Where many attacks seem to take place.

Under no circumstances would my child be in the house or garden with the dog present. Not ‘shut in another room’, not behind a stair gate, not shut in the garden… would just never go.

According to ChatGPT there have been 17 fatal attacks since 2021 in the UK alone. So globally, yes, probably hundreds.

How likely they are to rip your face off? How likely they are to turn without warning? How strong they are?

Clearly one of those owners who spout nonsense about the deed not the breed or no bad dogs only bad owners. Only argument is that there is no universally accepted definition of this style of beast-dog.

Do you not think being able to define the animal you’re condemning is important?

RedRiverHog · 23/08/2025 18:28

I will never understand people who are offended by someone not wanting their child or themselves to be around their dog. Like its a personal insult?
I have a golden retriever. 7 years old and no history of aggressive behaviour. If someone didn't want to have their child in the house with him, that's absolutely fine.
I have done all I can to make him fit into the human world. Well bred, social and ongoing training. But he is still an 40kg animal and has his own feelings and reactions.
I don't believe he would hurt someone but that will never be 100% and anyone who says so about their dog is arrogant and foolish.

Personally I think all bully type dogs should be banned

Maray1967 · 23/08/2025 18:31

No, never -I would not be in that house, let alone my child. Quite frankly, anyone stupid enough to own an XL bully does not get to look after my DC.
