To have one small glass of red wine at 38 weeks pregnant?

baby2c · 22/08/2025 20:49

I’m not a drinker at all but DH gets a bottle of red once or twice a month and tonight I really fancy just a very small glass, I’m a weirdo (according to DH) who likes ice in red wine on the rare occasion I have it. DH is only having one glass just in case I was to go into labour and he had to drive to hospital. So I was thinking of having a tiny amount with some ice and enjoying sipping it whilst watching tv in my pjs however I’m not sure if this is totally out of order or reasonable? Would you? Or did you? I haven’t touched alcohol at all since finding out I am pregnant at 4 weeks.

Not sure why some are saying just wait and ‘enjoy’ it after, ‘celebrate’ with a glass. OP will barely get chance to finish a glass of water after for a very good while let alone enjoy a celebratory drink in peace - unless you were talking waiting months afterwards. Time to enjoy is right now.

Exactly! The last thing i wanted after my c section was a glass of wine!!

My baby didn't reliably sleep through the night until he was ONE. A glass of red when you've been woken up 5 times the night before just doesn't hit right.

CrispieCake · 22/08/2025 23:20

I've changed my mind. YABU to drink red wine.

I stuck to champagne when I was pregnant.

The WHO suggested thst woman of childbearing age so 18-50 shouldn’t drink at all so as not to impact a potential fetus. It was even less popular than iced red

US agency's alcohol advice for women is mocked https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-35493188

None of that changes the fact that there is no known safe level in pregnancy and that is what women should be told. They are then rightly free to make their choice based on that.

Medical staff should not be encouraging it, and in the pregnancies I went private for and therefore had a choice, I’d have changed midwives if they did.

This might be the most comment on the internet today.
OP have you wine, every single scientist says that amount is totally fine

You managed to one up it with a single sentence!

Grammarnut · 22/08/2025 23:51

Of course not unreasonable - your DH is a weirdo, though. Why do you put ice in red wine? It's supposed to be drunk at room temperature. Btw I drank half a bottle of red wine the Christmas I was pregnant with DD (born April) - no ill effects so far (she is 40 and earns 6 figures).

FunnysInLaJardin · 22/08/2025 23:58

my dc are 15 and 19 and I had a small glass of wine every night when I was pregnant. They are fine, and it was fine in those days

MumWifeOther · 23/08/2025 00:02

Just wait?

Thankfully they’re fine but needing a glass of wine every night, even in pregnancy, sounds like an alcoholic to me

RafaFan · 23/08/2025 00:14

My obstetrician, very old school, had three kids herself. She told me she very occasionally had a glass of wine in the third trimester. If you've not had a drink at all for the entire pregnancy, and have a few mouthfuls now, it'll be fine.

Cherryicecreamx · 23/08/2025 00:23

I think sipping a small glass of wine is fine. I'm a believer that the odd thing here or there should be okay - we're built to be a bit more robust than that.
With my first, I didn't know I was pregnant until 17 weeks. I was young, went to a festival, drank, smoked.. did all sorts I shouldn't have been doing. I was so worried when I found out but thankfully he was absolutely fine! Similarly you hear of mum's not changing their lifestyle throughout their pregnancy and go on to have healthy babies.
I wouldn't encourage actively drinking but I don't think the odd one will hurt.

If you’re asking on here, you sound like the kind of woman who’ll worry if you have it. I wouldn’t, but I sympathise — I had a lovely bottle of Chardonnay in the fridge from the day before I found out I was pregnant. It taunted me for nine long months!

I'd have drunk it. My doctor told us to break open the champagne when I was pregnant - I'd had a miscarriage and it had taken some years to conceive again. This was the late 70s when people were not so angst ridden - pregnant women were even recommended to eat cheese and eggs!

Phobiaphobic · 23/08/2025 00:35

It's a wonder everyone survived their mother's or grandmother's pregnancy to end up posting on here. You can guarantee they weren't being chided for a single glass of wine.

Oxo01 · 23/08/2025 00:35

If you have not drunk throughout then why start now.
But up to you .

Chickensky · 23/08/2025 00:37

MidnightPatrol · 22/08/2025 21:49

That depends if you consider loading more and more restrictions on mothers ‘just in case’, progress.

The WHO was recently advocating all women of childbearing age not drink at all, just in case they got pregnant. Is that progressive too?

Not to derail the thread but wtf?!!! That's absolute madness. Do you have a source?

@baby2c OP by this time of night, hope you have either enjoyed your small glass of wine or not if it didn't sit well with you.

Shattereddreamsparkway · 23/08/2025 00:58

If anyone on here had worked with children with fetal alcohol spectrum disorder will now they didn’t get it from their mother drinking a very small amount of wine on one sole occasion…

Martha70 · 23/08/2025 01:06

And alcohol police are out giving advice🙈

StandFirm · 22/08/2025 20:51

Would you give your newborn a very small glass of wine in their bottle? No. As tempting as it is, the risks aren't worth it.

Be quiet

Fifisneighbor · 23/08/2025 03:59

I think it’s ok to have and enjoy. The only reason I never had even a little during my pregnancy is because I knew I would want more, and that was obviously a no go. Enjoy the last few days/weeks of pregnancy OP!

Autumnsmumv · 23/08/2025 05:22

It’s absolutely fine! I had a few proseccos when I was pregnant. Defo didnt hit the spot like it did when I wasn’t pregnant but it was absolutely fine.

There was a draft resolution by the World Health Organisation. Essentially the idea is that alchohol in early pregnancy can affect the fetus (even before a woman knows she is pregnant) so women of childbearing age shouldn’t be drinking at all.

I think if you are going to get down to that level of risk elimination then mens sperm quality can be affected if they drink regularly in the six months before conception. Oddly enough the curtailment of freedom of men doesnt seem to feature. Surely if alchohol can cause poor quality sperm potentially causing birth defects then any man hoping to have sex with no a woman of child bearing age should be abstaining too just in case?

You’ve opened up a can of over zealous MN worms now! how dare you produce perfectly healthy children whilst having a glass of wine pregnant.

Goes to get the 🍿

I ate liver, drank Guinness, blue cheese, runny eggs, I had hot spas, even went to a farm and petted sheep and goats whilst pregnant, all things you’re warned about. I survived!!!!

That’s called Survivors Bias. Look it up.

Im not begrudging anyone a glass of wine while pregnant btw. But drinking every single night when pregnant? Surely you can see that’s outwith the realms of a normal relationship with alcohol?
