Currently switched the Top 40 countdown on Radio 1 just to see if there’s any impressive bangers!

Personally I think we’re messing music programmes nowadays. The only one that’s on is The Hit List. I mean - I enjoy that - mit I think we should have more programs along the lines of Top of the Pops

Not since the 80s.

Lillibridge · 22/08/2025 16:28

I think the last year I regularly did that was 1986.

Dangermoo · 22/08/2025 16:35

The taping of the charts, trying to drown out the DJ's words after each song 🎵. Blissful days 😊

Itiswhysofew · 22/08/2025 16:43

I don't. I have the radio on in the kitchen all day & do catch the odd song, but I wouldn't purposely tune-in

caramac04 · 22/08/2025 16:45

Not for over 20 years but it used to be really important to me to listen.

Teaper · 22/08/2025 16:47

Surprisingly

Oasis ‘Don’t Look Back In Anger’ is relatively high in this week’s chart

The number one is ‘Golden’ by a K Pop band 🙌

I listen to radio 1 throughout the day so if I catch it, I catch it

needacorset · 22/08/2025 18:36

Thankyou for this post. I'm going to switch on Radio 1 next Friday at 4pm and listen to it.
I last listened in the late 20naughties, but the DJs were talking too much, so I was put off and stopped trying to tune in.
I agree, there needs to be Top of the Pops, but if there isn't enough new music to broadcast for half an hour every week, then BBC could do Top Of The Pops monthly, on the 1st of every month, a count down to No.1, I reckon.

You aren’t aware of K-pop demon hunters? It’s a film with a bloody amazing soundtrack!

ThankYouNigel · 22/08/2025 21:13

I couldn’t agree more OP. I would love a return of TOTP!

I don’t, I wouldn’t even know when it was on to listen to. I love music though.

ShitYoureAMess · 23/08/2025 07:51

Just looked at the top 40. Benson Boone’s Beautiful Things and Teddy Swims Lose Control are both still in there. 🤯 Lots of songs I don’t know. I’m getting old.

My DD talks about this and scolded me because I thought it was the same thing as katseye (??)

DriveVerySlowlyPastNumber23IWantThemToSeeMyHat · 23/08/2025 07:54

With the drivel that's produced nowadays, definitely not 😂

Friday afternoons 4pm Radio 1

But it was Sunday night tradition when I was a teen. Fridays seems all sorts of wrong.😂

At least you have heard of them, I hadn’t. 😂 I swore I’d never ‘lose touch’ with ‘today’s music’ but I really have. It doesn’t help that my kids seem to like music from my era or earlier.

Yes agreed !!

No, not since the days of Pearl Carr and Teddy Johnson.

Popular Music has really gone down hill since then, what with The Wombles, Black Sabbath and that sort of thing.

IMO

Same. I mostly WFH and have radio 2 on all day. I'm an old dinosaur, but like listening to what is current. DD and I enjoyed watching Chapell Roan at Reading on iPlayer yesterday.

I can't remember the last time I listened to the chart countdown, but I remember taking my transistor radio to school to listen to it on a Tuesday lunchtime (1970s).

ShitYoureAMess · 23/08/2025 08:16

Teaper · 23/08/2025 08:02

Although I definitely don’t miss trying to record onto cassettes and the DJ talking all over the end of my favourites ruining my recordings. Being able to stream music has been life changing. My kids think how we used to get our music is hilarious, they’ll never understand the importance of those play, record and pause buttons on a Sunday evening. 😂

CeeJay81 · 23/08/2025 08:21

Not since the 90s. When it was what actually what people bought, rather than a download. Listening to the UK top 40 on a Sunday was a big part of my childhood. Wouldn't be the same now.
