Snoring spouse

Has anyone actually managed to cure snoring? If not can anyone recommend ear plugs that actually block out the noise? My dh is not too much overweight, does not drink heavily and has never smoked.
We're in a static caravan with family on holiday and so I have no other room to escape too. The last day today, very hot and ive told them to go out without me. After a week from hell and arguing in the middle of the night, me threatening I don't want to do this again I'm so depressed. Stuck here on the last day as I needed a lie in. Feel like it's the end of nice holidays together, certainly abroad anyway, as we can't afford two single persons holidays. The argument from last night hanging over us and they've all gone out. I'm shattered and missing out. He says he will go to the doctors but what can they actually do. I've read increased snoring in males is normal after making any necessary lifestyle improvements, due to age. He's 61. I'll be moving to a spare room at home permanently at home when we get back, so I feel even worse.

My partner was an exceptionally loud snorer and was getting progressively worse which I didn’t think was possible. Since having DD 5 years ago i have real issues sleeping so was at the end of my tether. He went to a sleep clinic and they monitor you to see what is causing it. We thought it was a breathing issue but it actually had something to do with his teeth. He went to a dentist for a specially fitted mouth guard - it was expensive ~£1.3k I think - which took about 6 months to get (as he had to have some fillings removed and redone. But it works! Occasionally he makes a small noise like a gently purring cat but mostly nothing. It lasts decades apparently. The most romantic thing he ever did for me. Hope you manage to get to the bottom of it.

@OrchidOrchard Record him. Record the sound of his snoring and play it back to him. Don’t tell him what it is. He’ll probably comment that it’s a horrible noise or something like that. Once he finds out that it’s him he might understand why you’re unable to sleep through it and might go to the doctor.

If you are cooking dinners for him, you could try making them lower calorie/smaller portions. Losing weight could help (if he has it to lose)

Agree with music headband and listen to rain sounds or any white noise. My musicozy stopped working so thinking of getting another type? Just kept stopping?

I use the moldable earplugs. Am going away soon with mega loud snorer dh. He's usually in the spare room especially if I have to be up early the next day. But obviously can't book 2 separate rooms on holiday.

Dh is also waiting for a sleep clinic appointment. He sounds like he stops breathing sometimes so I made him see the GP.

what you describe as your husbands apparent breathing stopping is a symptom of sleep apnea.

my other half does the halted breathing too when asleep.

it might be useful for some to know he is underweight, and has been showing the symptoms since his late thirties.

So not always overweight people, not always older people….

I have read that sleep apnea can be dangerous, so maybe research it together, and make a decision re investigation into what to do best for him.

I’m the snorer in our house. Non smoker, non drinker, have lost weight and still I snore. Nothing more I can do about it really. I sleep on my side not my back and still I snore. Fortunately my DH sleeps well.

@LoveSoftAsAnEasyChair as said he's waiting for the sleep clinic appointment. Hopefully won't have long to wait?

Have you had a sleep study done? A proper one overnight in a clinic with many wires attached to you and staff watching you and monitoring you all night via CCTV? If you haven’t done that then yes there is more that you can do about it. There’s also snoring mouthguards to try.

The wait time prob will vary depending on where you live.
I hope it’s not too long, but if it does seem ages since him being referred, you could enquire about the likely wait time.

meantime, it might help if his pillow is raised, and or raise the head of the mattress so that his head is elevated?

I was in a similar situation and it was ruining my marriage. I tried every type of ear plug going but couldn’t make it work as I could still hear my husband. I read about mouth taping and he said he would give it a go. It has worked wonders for us and I now do it too as some people say it has multiple health benefits not just for snoring.

Mouth tape doesn't work on dh as he has a beard. He tried it.

Our sleep study - NHS sent the equipment to the house and you wear it for one night, they collect the data and give you the result. Didn’t need to go to a clinic etc really easy and simple

Oh that’s a real shame! Hubby has a beard too but for some reason it works on him… hope it continues to work as any other relief has been short lived but this has worked for a few months now 😊

How strange? I wonder if dh hasn't used enough?
