What do you think of the flags?

Latesummersunset · 21/08/2025 18:05

Apologies if this has been done already.

I live in one of the areas where the flags were started. We couldn’t understand what they were for until it popped up in the news. Apparently the councils are going to be taking them down.

I don’t really have much of an opinion either way but my concern is that they’ll soon become tatty, fall down and leave a mess everywhere. But it seems lots of people are loving them. They do look quite cheery at the moment.

What do people think?

Yabu - they are a mess/racist/health and safety hazard

Yanbu - they are cheerful and patriotic. Keep them

Why? Absolutely true. They also had an “hilarious” sign by the front door saying “Treapassers will be shot. Survivors will be shot again”. If that doesn’t declare nut jobs, what does?

Nice drip feed.

What on earth are you talking about, drip feed?

I posted about it at the time, during the Trump campaign too

MrsSkylerWhite · 22/08/2025 08:23

Not really surprising in a constituency with a conservative MP.

My comment was in response to the poster who said the flags were being used as provocation in areas with high levels of immigrants.

We have flags everywhere yet must be one the least diverse counties in the UK despite being fairly close to a large city.

Gladysknightjustwalkinmyshoes · 22/08/2025 08:53

I'm sick of bits of coloured, patterned bits of cloth causing so much discontent within the UK.
That goes for all of them of whatever the persuasion of the people that put them up.
Left wing, right wing, bingo wing, batwing 😁

I think one feature of our national flag is the the fact it has a cross which is a product of our Christian heritage and therefore you may have at least a cultural Christian affiliation to its symolism. It is very much like our national anthem which directly refers to a Christian God and King.

Could the flags therefore be seen as a statement of what people believe England should be i.e.a majority Christian country?

mids2019 · 22/08/2025 08:56

@Dangermoo

I agree that Palestinian flags are now a proxy for denoting Muslim majority neighbourhoods and the cultuural /social divisions are worryong.

I wonder if the flag displays are a reaction to this?

Devonmaid1844 · 22/08/2025 09:03

Latesummersunset · 21/08/2025 20:13

The local group that started this in Brum are being very clear that they do not want to be associated with any far right political groups.

They say that the flags are for all to feel proud no matter your race or religion.

They say that their aim is to reclaim the flag from racists.

I mean they're unlikely to say 'we're racist and flying them to make people feel intimidated and leave the country'... Doesn't mean that's not what the true motivation is

Yes, it's a vicious circle, imo. Council gets met with aggression, while removing one type of flag, nothing is done about it.

PandoraSocks · 22/08/2025 09:05

I think the new found enthusiasm for flags etc.will die out once the weather turns colder and rainier. As will the protests outside hotels.

I agree.
The great british weather will dampen their enthusiasm.

Given less than half the population describe themselves as Christian, I'd say the answer to that is no.

Yep. If the council insist on people removing every England flag, they better make everyone removes all the Palestine flags too, and the Welsh ones, and the Scottish ones, and every other flag too that represents a nation. I can't see things going well if it's only the ENGLISH who are told to remove the flag.

With the way the English are hated on so much, (even by other English people inexplicably,) and how some people imply that the English are the only ones who have ever done anything 'wrong' in the past, it's no wonder there is so much discord and tension right now.

Superhansrantowindsor · 22/08/2025 09:15

I had flags up for VE and VJ Day. I always put flags up for things like the Olympics, jubilees, royal weddings etc. any excuse really as I think they look summery and cheery.
going to have to stop as I don’t want people thinking I’m racist.

TheNuthatch · 22/08/2025 09:16

Where I live (Labour stronghold) there are England flags on all lampposts every year for St. George's day and rememberence Sunday. They have been put up and taken down by a local man for as long as I've lived here. Nobody has an issue with it.

Well that juvenile image, just about sums up why it's the left, who embarrasses themselves. I'm cringing for you.

Cry about it.

No don't stop flying them. We shouldn't be ashamed of our national flag. It doesn't belong to the right or the left.

Genuinely - what’s this about English people hating other English people?

I don’t hate English people.

I do however strongly dislike people who set bins on fire, intimidate people, encourage people to set hotels on fire, and assume that black men are up to something because they’re in a park.

That’s a completely reasonable thing to dislike. Thugs. People don’t like thugs, surely.

So now we've got the selective thug. Priceless.

NotAMessiahJustAVeryNaughtyBoy · 22/08/2025 09:30

Honestly? Couldn’t give a flying fuck. Seems like a distraction technique from the daily mail and other similar news outlets, or an easy way to win over the more bigoted of their readers (not calling all DM readers etc bigoted btw, but some must be given the stuff that they print). Fly your flags; Wales, England, Pride, Palestine, Israel etc and live and let live.

I mean. Burning down buildings and throwing street furniture at people is fairly thuggish behaviour. Even if it is in the name of Engerlaaand.

What about fireworks being thrown at police, in the name of Palestine?
