...to wonder why men can't close a cupboard door properly?

Over 20 years with my ex and I almost got used to the fact he couldn’t shut a f’ing door properly or at all! Even a new kitchen with soft closers didn’t cure his phobia of seeing to it that the door was shut right. Separation was agony, but just when I thought I was recovering I let a new guy into my life, he stays over for the first time and kindly makes my morning brew. But it turns into The Amityville Horror when I go to the kitchen and discover he has the same affliction to my ex. Not one but 3 doors left ajar, WTF is wrong with them!?

Same reason they can’t turn lights off, whatever that is.

mynameiscalypso · 20/08/2025 17:05

It’s not just men. I’m firmly guilty of this too.

Coulddowithanap · 20/08/2025 17:07

I do this all the time and not a man 😬 not on purpose, usually get distracted and forget id even opened the cupboard or think I've closed it and actually haven't shut it all the way.

MelBrookesMyHero · 20/08/2025 17:08

Not guilty!

Comedycook · 20/08/2025 17:08

We're the opposite in my house....I am the one always leaving cupboard doors open

StrawberrySquash · 20/08/2025 17:09

I'm terrible at this. Definitely me as I live alone!

myopinionis · 20/08/2025 17:10

Not a sex-based thing, in my experience.

But yes, it's really fucking annoying. I share your horror.

AmIHumanOrAmIAYeti · 20/08/2025 17:10

DH would say the same about me. It’s one of my (adorable) ADHD traits.

Icanttakethisanymore · 20/08/2025 17:10

I’m a female, terrible at closing doors, turning off lights, putting things away. I genuinely try (and I’m getting better) but I’m terrible at it.

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 20/08/2025 17:10

Adhd?

Aspanielstolemysanity · 20/08/2025 17:12

Help, does this mean I am a man?

I just am always thinking about other stuff

Nourishinghandcream · 20/08/2025 17:12

Not just men!
My best friend does this all the time. If there is a door to left open or a light to be left on (or TV/iron/hair straighteners etc) then she does it.
The number of times she has been in a low cupboard, stood up and cracked her head on a top cupboard door she has left open!🤕

mindutopia · 20/08/2025 17:17

I don’t think it’s men though. In my house, almost no one can close a door, a cupboard, turn the lights off. Except my 7 year old son. 😂 He’s fab. He gets up early on a Saturday and makes himself a hot chocolate (in microwave, not with boiling water, so not as dodgy as it sounds). I can come down and he will have climbed up on the counter to tidy away the hot chocolate, shut the cupboard door, put spoon in the sink, wiped up any mess, turned the lights off, and shut the kitchen door behind him. It is a salve in a chaotic world to me. If dd makes any sort of food, she’s 12, it looks like we’ve been burgled and 50/50 something might be on fire.

Between she and Dh, no one shuts a door or cupboard or turns off a light. If I’m gone for the day and come home in the evening, the house is lit up like a Christmas tree. Every bloody light is on. We even have 3 locked outbuildings and at least 2 of them will have the lights on but be locked. Someone went to the trouble of going out to the barn, unlocking the padlock, turning every f ing light on and locking up again. It drives me nuts. And then Dh complains about our electric bill. Well, yes, if we leave every light on for 12 hours a day.

I think there are people who shut cupboards and turn off lights and people who don’t. 😩

It's not so much closing doors but not being able to close the fecking things without slamming them.

What is it with a good percentage of the male population that they're incapable of pressing a door handle and closing the thing quietly.

muddyford · 20/08/2025 17:24

Or wipe a worktop properly. I have known only two men who could do it to the required standard and I wasn't married to either of them.

MidnightPatrol · 20/08/2025 17:24

My DH also suffers from this chronic condition.

My understanding is there is no cure, and trust me I have tried everything.

tigger1001 · 20/08/2025 17:24

I could have written this! I have a partner and 2 sons - all seem incapable of closing a door. Although youngest was trying to deal with a spider, opened the door to get a glass turned to flee when spider moved and almost knocked himself out on the open cupboard door. Let's see if that experience teaches him....

PrincessASDaisy · 20/08/2025 17:26

I’m a nanny and always know when the dads are home.

Thingsthatgo · 20/08/2025 17:26

I do this, and I don’t know why. My 10 year old daughter follows me around the kitchen closing the cupboards and sighing.

Maybeitllneverhappen · 20/08/2025 17:28

I thought it was just my husband! He's done this for years. I've joked about it, pointed it out kindly, called to him sarcastically asking if he's finished with the cupboard. All sorts. Nothing has made a difference. Even if we go away and are staying somewhere else, I walk into the kitchen after him and there's a cupboard open. I don't understand!!

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 20/08/2025 17:31

With your 'new guy' I suspect, until he feels confident, that he is always considering and planning, multiple escape routes / hiding places.

Or pick up their underwear off the floor.

take10yearsofmylife · 20/08/2025 18:18

Omg, good to know my husband is not the only annoying one!

Cupboard doors, most doors left open in the house as long as there is not risk of lost. No exception to fridge/freezer.

Butter lids never closed.

Lights always on because it's too much effort to open the curtains in the morning.

Lights stays on when not using his office.

All food - nothing closed / sealed.

Too lazy to get refund for the wrong items that we will never use or claim work expenses.

We don't share toilet because he doesnt press the flush button, only a light touch so it makes a sound but not enough water to flush anything. It's absolutely gross.

I truly think our house will look like a hoarders house without me.

FuckedOffWithTheLotOfThem · 20/08/2025 18:29

The males in my household are ok at shutting cupboard doors, the thing that irritates me on a daily basis is their inability to put stuff in the dishwasher. They helpfully move their used crocks to the general vicinity of the dishwasher and leave them scattered across the countertop, but the final step of opening the dishwasher and putting the stuff inside continues to elude them. Gah.
