To want a hooded towel that's actually a towel?

WilliamBell · 17/08/2025 13:04

Bought DC some new hooded towels/ponchos from John Lewis. Used them the first time and realised that for some bizarre reason, they are towelling material on the outside, but different material inside so they don't actually dry properly! Reading reviews this seems to be the John Lewis style, which makes no sense as surely the toweling bit needs to be inside where they actually need to dry?!

It's hard to find hooded towels beyond toddler age, but I need ones for DCs aged 6 and 7. Happy to have a bit bigger to grow into.

It's impossible to tell from online pictures which are actually towelling on the inside/all the way through. Can anyone recommend anything please?

I've got a Robie and it's pretty good. Mine is too big for me which means I can get dressed inside it which is handy at the beach. It's heavy cotton and quite bulky though.

I was thinking of sewing myself something for swimming. I have a smaller towel that I could sew onto the corner of the bigger towel... possibly. Or cut it in half and make a hood in the middle?

I’ve had these ones for years and they are great. Come in a variety of sizes too https://www.hoodedowls.co.uk/pages/hooded-owl-towels

DS has one of these. He’s 5’7 and still uses it for changing. It’s lush.

I was going to recommend Hooded Owls but others got there first! They are expensive but great quality - my kids have had theirs for years and they have lasted really well. They now do giant ones which are big enough for teens/adults (15yo DS uses them). Lovely thick proper towel material.

Theses are brilliant.

My son has been using this brand for years. Got him his 2nd Full Size one for university!

Just coming to say Robie Robe.

We have a couple and I got mine in the next size up so I have lots of room to manoeuvre.

I often use it in the winter as a baggy dressing gown after a bath, as it comfortably goes over me if even if I am wrapped in a big bath towel.

These one from decathlon are brilliant. Proper towelling. Poppers at the sides so they open out flat so they dry quickly. I just wish they did larger sizes in the same style.

I have a dry robe one https://dryrobe.com/products/towel-dryrobe-adults-pink

they’re pricey but honestly best money I’ve spent. I’ve had it almost 5 years and it doesn’t look any different! apart from the colour is ever so slightly faded.

it’s really thick/heavy so while not waterproof on the outside it’s incredibly warm/windproof if you wanted to use it at the beach or after outdoor swimming

This. The dry robe ones are great. Lovely thick proper towelling. Great for warming up on the beach. Ours are years old and still look great.

Lovehascomeandgone · 18/08/2025 19:15

Try little green radicals, dock and bay and muddy puddles. Have had from all and liked them.

CarterBeatsTheDevil · 18/08/2025 19:17

Pethstore. I have a thick towelling one for winter riverside changing and two thinner summer ones. They quite often have two for one deals or discounts.

Wildwild · 18/08/2025 19:22

They wear them at the beach and after swimming and they’ve been going strong for years!

WhippetsForever · 18/08/2025 19:28

Ah OP I'm having the same problem! Hate microfibre with a passion and it's blooming everywhere! I want proper towel ones but also not poncho style, one with proper arms. Got some fab ones from Mini Boden years ago and the children wear them for hours on the beach but my eldest has outgrown them and I can't find a suitable replacement

husbandcallsmepickle · 18/08/2025 19:28

I found a great one in Primark sale a few years ago. My mum wanted one and I couldn't find another in Primark so bought one from OHS

vroc81 · 18/08/2025 20:07

I got my daughter a Next one a couple of years ago it was towel inside and out…

ImNotAsThinkAsYouDrunkIAm · 18/08/2025 20:15

Two Bare Feet do them in a decent size.

Alwayswonderedwhy · 18/08/2025 20:40

I bought one from Regatta which is like this so I have to put it on inside out. Decathlon have some but they're quite thick and heavy so won't dry as quickly.

Haribo16 · 18/08/2025 20:42

Best ones I've found were from mountain warehouse towelling both inside and out and so lovely!! Bought the largest sizes for both my boys so that they will last!!

reversegear · 18/08/2025 20:42

Boden used to do fab ones

Letsgoforaskip · 18/08/2025 21:24

I used to get my kids secondhand Boden ones on eBay.
I got myself a towelling one from Red Equipment that is really good. It’s heavy towelling, a good size and washes well.

June2008 · 18/08/2025 21:39

Another vote for Robie robes. We've had ours for about 12 years and they've been great.

SophiaLaBe · 18/08/2025 22:10

We all have Rapanui ones and they are brilliant.

lessglittermoremud · 18/08/2025 22:37

My children wear two different ones robie ones when we are at the beach etc
https://robierobes.com/collections/original-series-junior/products/junior-original-series_saffron?variant=40050519867563

and then a cheaper one off of amazon for their swimming lessons etc where they have to independently remember to bring everything back home!
If you type in hooded towelling robe into Amazon there are some made of a thick terry material which are great, I think I paid around £9 for the cheaper ones and got the Robie ones in the sale last year, the robie ones do wash really well

Junior Original-Series Changing Robe

Robie Original changing robe is a must-have drying robe for kids who swim, surf or enjoy an outdoor lifestyle. It's still our most popular changing robe for kids.
