AIBU- worried about rain on wedding day

MummaHud · 17/08/2025 12:05

We are getting married in Spain on 27th with our family ( my fiance is Spanish ) the weather this morning was showing sunshine purely and this afternoon 55% chance of rain. We wanted to get married outside and the inside option isn’t as nice and completely defeats the object of getting married abroad.

I feel really sad about it. I know it’s 10 days away and could change back as easily as it changed this morning… but I feel a bit deflated tbh

We did this for our outdoor wedding, in April, in the UK - it worked! Beautiful weather. We have suggested it to all our friends since and it had worked for them too

So if I buried a sausage in my garden every single day then it would never rain? Don't think so.

MrsTerryPratchett · 17/08/2025 14:25

Surely half her guests, and the groom, are Spanish. When you marry someone from somewhere else (and I have) there are no destination weddings, just a choice between two ‘home’ weddings.

Eh? So many people marry a spouse from a different town, city or country these days. Why is a destination wedding not a thing for them?

The OP could’ve chosen any country to get married in regardless of her or her boyfriends birthplace

I’m sure I’ve read somewhere, or seen it on the telly, about burying a sausage at your outdoor wedding venue to prevent it raining on the day: it worked too.
Worth a try OP!

🤣
"Burying a sausage"
Sounds like the film American Pie but with garden plants instead of apple pies🤣

Apparently so. It might rain all around your garden but your garden will be dry as a bone because of the buried sausage

PestoHoliday · 17/08/2025 14:52

Do you worry about free rides when you've already paid?

MoonPixie29 · 17/08/2025 14:54

Please try not to worry about the weather! You will still have a wonderful day regardless.

I used to be a wedding coordinator at a predominantly outdoor venue in London, and I can tell you that some of the most enjoyable weddings were on rainy days as the families made the most of it regardless 😊

One wedding still decided to eat outside despite it was pouring down (there were big umbrellas over the tables but there was so much rain the floor started flooding) but they all had such a great time and were singing and dancing in the rain. It was so joyous to watch!

So I have to go and bury sausages in all the gardens?

This is going to get expensive! Do they have to be cooked first?

I knew someone would be picky so I’ll spell it out. Neither of the homes of the two people getting married are a ‘destination’. They are both home. Obviously (I thought but clearly not) a Spanish person and a British person could get married in Mongolia, and it would still be a destination wedding, but neither Spain nor the UK are destinations.

If we didn’t want an external wedding, we would’ve booked England and got our Spanish family over to here.. not vice versa. When you have a wedding, you have a vision and a location dream… your sarcastic comments don’t take away from the fact that it’s ok to have a ‘perfect wedding’ vision and our wedding we wanted it to be outside.

You can’t think like this though, otherwise anything that goes “wrong” will seem like a massive issue.
we got married in uk on 1st October outside. We bought loads of lovely white umbrellas in case it did rain, and I googled loads of weddings rain photos so if it did rain, I would still have some pictures I loved. Actually it was a gloriously warm day and we didn’t need any of it at all, but I felt so much better in my head to have a plan in case it rained.

Myfridgeiscool · 17/08/2025 12:27

I’ve just googled it. You need to bury the sausage the day before the wedding.
(not a euphemism lol)

No, you bury a Child of Prague statue in the garden for good weather. Though some lightweights just put him under a bush.

An important life lesson try not to worry about what you can't control.

Another important life/marriage lesson, it doesn't have to be perfect to be enjoyable.
Wishing you much happiness OP.

BMW6 · 17/08/2025 16:14

Just get several of those huge multi coloured golf umbrellas and keep nearby, sorted!

Could look really unique and great in family photos! Why be like every other wedding, how dull!

I wouldn’t worry unless the venue is on the plain

Next time if you are worried about storms try Hertford Hereford or Hampshire.

Lmnop22 · 17/08/2025 18:05

If you’re looking on the Apple weather app thing you get on your Home Screen on iPhone it’s an average % over the whole day.

If you click into the day it’ll give you minute by minute predictions across the day and might set your mind at rest if the 55% daily average is because there’s due to be an hour’s rain at 5am or something. Some parts of days where there’s 100% rain predicted are listed an guaranteed sunshine on the app and it’s usually quite accurate (maybe a little far now but nearer the time!).

Congratulations and good luck with the weather!

Maddy70 · 17/08/2025 18:10

I live in Spain. If it does rain it's likely to be barely noticeable this time of year, maybe 10 mins then blue sky again , or a bit of moisture in the air for a while.
If you are unlucky enough for it to be a downpour, rain storms are quite spectacular in Spain so enjoy it.
Also weather forecasts are super unreliable in Spain. It's 10 days away ... Likely to be completely different by then

AuntieDen · 17/08/2025 18:26

meh, we got married in the UK in August, of course it rained.

We persuaded the registrar that they could indeed do a fast trot to the outdoor shelter place where we had planned the ceremony instead of moving things inside as per regulations, we had to move the cream tea indoors when the thunderstorm hit and I trashed my dress playing croquet barefoot in the rain.

Great day! You will enjoy it whatever the weather.

I wonder this too- also does it matter which brand? Will the cheap ones be as effective?

Pickingmyselfup · 17/08/2025 18:44

PestoHoliday · 17/08/2025 14:52

Do you worry about free rides when you've already paid?

Or ten thousand spoons when all you need is a knife...

Bad times...

In all seriousness...

Can you move the wedding to indoors? Is there a way of keeping everybody dry?

It chucked it down on my wedding day, we got a few photos outside but we were mostly stuck inside. I hadn't planned for an outdoor ceremony but I had hoped for guests to mingle on the lawns and play garden games but it didn't get to happen. It was a shame but I don't dwell on it, several years later there are more pressing things on my mind.

Whatever happens, you will be fine.

I was trying to justify what the OP had said in that she may as well have stayed at home rather than booked a holiday abroad where sunshine would have been more likely than here ! No need to be so judgy

Empress13 · 17/08/2025 19:16

Anyway OP whatever the outcome weather wise I hope you have a fabulous day !

Catwoman8 · 17/08/2025 19:17

If its any help, I was in Spain a couple of weeks ago. The forecast wasn't great, BBC weather app was showing thunderstorms forecast and rain all day for one of the days, and a bit of rain on another morning. I checked 2 days before going , so the forecast should have been pretty accurate at that point.

Guess what? Absolutely no rain.

UnderCoverB0ss · 17/08/2025 19:18

You can’t control the uncontrollable. But you will bore people if you keep going on about it.

Raw sausage in the place the wedding is taking place! The night before. Although we chose a speciality local one
