Foodbank - 3 cars

TalkToTheHand123 · 17/08/2025 00:11

Am I being unreasonable to think a family with 2 cars and a big fancy house shouldn't be using foodbanks regularly? No disability issues.

Even CFs would have to be assessed by a professional to be referred to a food bank.

People have posted that that isn't the case with all types of food banks (there are many). If they have been through a referral system I would of course think zebras - they must have met the criteria.
But Mumsnet has also taught me that the level of cfery from some people is unlimited!

OrwellianTimes · 17/08/2025 10:35

Of course someone with a big house and 3 cars shouldn’t need to use a food bank.

However it only takes one day for your fortunes to change. You can go from having a great job to redundancy with no payout overnight. You can suffer catastrophic health issues overnight.

So unless you know the ins and outs of everything, wind your beak in.

SomewhatDissatisfied · 17/08/2025 10:36

As far as I’m aware you don’t get to use food banks regularly? They aren’t a long term solution.

PinkLoveHearts · 17/08/2025 10:37

yes I think you are, life is hard enough, you have no idea of the circumstances that they’re going through. I think you’re being judgmental and unreasonable

2 cars or 3?

Given that you can't make up your mind how many cars they have, I'd probably refrain from judgement.

Screamingabdabz · 17/08/2025 10:41

I have relatives who plead poverty and everyone bends over backwards helping them out. It doesn’t stop them going on foreign holidays and travelling every single school holiday. Brazen piss takers and grabby fuckers are everywhere ready to take advantage of every opportunity given to them.

Coconutter24 · 17/08/2025 10:44

Climbingrosexx · 17/08/2025 10:23

I might be old fashioned but I would live within my means, if I cant afford food I can't afford a big house and 3 cars.

What if you already had the house and cars before having financial problems and the cars are paid off?

Hoppinggreen · 17/08/2025 10:47

I donate to foodbanks and other places and once I do I don't consider what happens to my donation after that
I leave it up to people who know far more about these things (the volunteers) than me to decide who deserves it

So do I, and exactly the same re considering what happens to the donation. As in I leave it up to them.

dogcatkitten · 17/08/2025 10:50

Also what do you mean by a big fancy house, a four bed detached on an estate, or a ten bedroom mansion in 5 acres. If the latter you may have a point.

Two cars may be essential for work, school runs, etc.

solando · 17/08/2025 10:52

These aren't benefits anyway the government has nothing to do with them

Ooooh so sorry my information wasn't fully perfect. I didn't realise I was being MN evidence assessed and audited.

I"ve referred plenty people who just go to take the mick just to make my job easier.

I didn't realise there was a community food bank. I may start going if I have a local one, so I can go to the pub more or meals out, rather than spending money on food.

I mentioned disabilities as I'd be ok with those that need a car with disabilities. The family in question were on tv being interviewed so for me it's ok to be a bit nosey about their personal situation.

I understand life can take a turn and have sympathy and understanding for those in these situations, my point was more about those who go on fancy holidays and could pay if they wanted to and use foodbanks so they don't have to pay for food. The family being interviewed appeared to be using foodbanks over a long time while going on fancy holidays.

@Katherina198819 "good public transport"....in all of the UK?
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Yeah that doesn't exist in a vast majority of the country.

Which program was it? Perhaps we can all have a watch?

Ooh, that's big of you. 🙄 Biscuit

Needmorelego · 17/08/2025 10:56

@TalkToTheHand123 they can't have been using food banks that require a referral then.
Because you can't keep going there repeatedly.
The fact you've never heard of the "community fridge" type shows you are just an nosy busy body really who doesn't actually know anything about society around you.

Edited

It looked like a £200,000 ish property that they had bought on a mortgage a long time ago. The cars didn't seem essential for work or school runs and more for luxury from what I recall from the interview.

She has a future career as a pip assessor perhaps?

WimbyAce · 17/08/2025 10:57

I don't think it's easy to judge these days as so many people are struggling and the cost of a weekly shop and bills has gone up so much. There are those of us on middle incomes with no other help and a hefty mortgage to pay so yes I can imagine at times a foodbank might be helpful. At work we have a hub with donated clothes and I didn't have any qualms taking some school dresses for my daughter.

I didn't say they did. I was just saying there is a low bar for being accepted for one.

Your job is to refer people to the local foodbank and yet you didn't know there was a community shop near you?

As other pps have said, if it's a foodbank they would have needed a referal and if it's a community shop then anyone can use it.

There's a third scenario also. She could be coupled up with someone who financially abuses her, controls all the money, and keeps her very short of money for essentials.

Edited to say I accidently put a quote up.

Sounds like you know Jack All and are doing a shit ton of assuming instead.

Yeah that doesn't exist in a vast majority of the country.

Yeah I moved to a village precisely because one bus in the morning and one in the afternoon to coordinate with school times wasn’t going to be sustainable for me.

some places have awful public transport.

even where I am now, if I want to go to the nearest large town, 15/20 mins in the car. Just over 3 hours on public transport.
