And for reference, going to Northumberland for two weeks when you live in Burnley isn't a staycation it's a holiday, caller to the radio earlier!

Coincidentally, I'm going on my holibobs this arvo and I am bringing ... brekkie sandos; choccy biccies from Sainser's; a case of stubbies; a brand new lippie; a net for the mozzies; my fave budgie smugglers; and my doggo, bubs, and hubby and a couple of other numpties. What are you bringing?

Using "staycation" to mean a domestic holiday is just incorrect, though. Do Hawaiians go on a "staycation" to Maine, or Muscovites to Vladivostok? If you're away overnight, it's not a staycation.

People calling British holidays ‘Staycations’ is my absolute pet hate.

A staycation is when you stay at home (hence the ‘Stay’ bit) and have lots of day trips.

I blame the BBC. And the internet. And people in general.

A stay cation is when you holiday in your home country

I do indeed and so does the poster above, @ElfAndSafetyBored. Most of the population, however, seemingly don't.

Edited

Well the poster you tagged obviously doesn’t know what a staycation is

WalterMittysPuppet · 15/08/2025 20:55

DH and I think "holibobs" is so despicable that we've been using it ironically. We're on holibobs next week.

My obnoxious bore of a FIL says "Holibubs", which is even fucking worse.

DrFoxtrot · 15/08/2025 20:59

Your definition of staycation is entirely correct 👏👏

LemonLadybird · 15/08/2025 21:02

Sadly no holibobs or #makingmemories with the fam this year, due to the cozzie livs

Surely in this day and age you have more pressing things to think about ????

A stay cation is when you holiday in your home country

It’s not.

ohyesido · 15/08/2025 21:10

I’m going on my holibobs to centerparcs next weekend

NewGoldFox · 15/08/2025 21:10

A stay cation is when you holiday in your home country

It isn't. It's when you stay at home and have away days out.

ClearFruit · 15/08/2025 21:17

Adding 'this one'. As in, 'out shopping with this one'. No.

The venn diagram of people who say the word “hollibobs” and have a “live love laugh” sign is just a giant circle

Menty B

Hahahaha fucking hell.

thismorning123 · 15/08/2025 21:18

I HATE hollibobs with a passion. Same with chrimbo to and its also on the same level as Platty Jubes for the Queens jubilee.

ClearFruit · 15/08/2025 21:18

Fur babies. Fuck off, please.

ClearFruit · 15/08/2025 21:19

Making memories.

ClearFruit · 15/08/2025 21:19

If you can't handle me at my, blah blah. Jesus no.

Gruttenberg · 15/08/2025 21:22

My lovely DSIL (from the West Country) used to say holibobs and it made me cringe every time I heard it. She died unexpectedly in a car accident and I'd give anything to hear her say it again. Holibobs forever.

AliceMaforethought · 15/08/2025 21:25

Holibobs is dire, but I disagree with you about 'staycation'. Before mumsnet, I'd never heard of it meaning anything other than a UK holiday, ie not one abroad.
