To not understand the JD Vance weird face meme all over the Cotswolds?

BlueJuniper94 · 15/08/2025 11:45

So I understand he is not popular and has recently been holidaying in the Cotswolds. But I don't understand this big exaggerated AI face some group has been putting on billboards and driving around.

Firstly, are they mocking his appearance? That's not very nice, no matter what someone's politics are, their actions should be the target not what they look like.

And if it is about his remarks about free speech - again, I really don't understand how this image "owns" him, he's a foreign politician. UK gov aren't going to care about that, wouldn't it make sense to prove the point by criticising power that is actually British?

Fill me in please, I don't understand - what am I missing?

Communists!! Have we travelled back in time to McCarthyism and the 'Reds under the beds' scare?

JD Vance is a toxic, God bothering hypocrite with repellent right-wing views. He is happy to stir up anti-immigrant hate despite being married to the daughter of Indian immigrants. He openly despises the UK so I don't know why he wants to holiday here.

Wouldn’t be surprised if some who shares his views is funding his “holiday”.

And that is not OK. Non citizens aren't afforded due process either, in direct contravention of the Constitution. Maybe you shouldn't throw stones until you've sorted out your glass house. And while you're at it, remove that beam from your eye.

Interestingly what people like @CharmingDryad also don’t seem to realise is if non-citizens don’t have due process, then neither do citizens.

their little brains can’t comprehend that if you get arrested for being a non citizen, then you need due process to prove your citizenship.

HPFA · 15/08/2025 13:42

Growth in the UK is higher than in the US and the Uk is not "collapsing" - go and take a walk around if you don't believe me. You're all going to look even sillier when the collapse doesn't happen over the net four years.

Trump and JD Vance are horrible people and the government they lead is going to lead to masses of preventable deaths around the world and in their own country.

I know Starmer and Lammy have to be nice to them (and I think they're doing an OK job of trying to restrain Trump's worse impulses re Ukraine) but the citizens of this country certainly don't have to do the same.

CharmingDryad · 15/08/2025 13:46

Mustbethat · 15/08/2025 12:45

Have you checked your constitution? Under that they are.

No. At least, that’s not how it’s interpreted.

noncitizens are sometimes refused entry or deported for speech. It’s controversial whether that should change or not.

You really don’t have free speech in the UK though. It’s shocking to us Americans.

Enlighten me, what is it that we can't say?

As someone who has lived in the US, I’d say it’s more shocking how little many Americans know about the rest of the world, and how blind they are to how quickly their freedoms are being eroded by an autocratic government.

What confuses Americans is our lack of constitution, and an inability to understand the differences between a young country that has a prescribed constitution, and a much older country where the starting point was do what you like, unless it was outlawed. In the US, the constitution sets out what they can do and what your rights are - though as can be seen the government is happy to ride roughshod over that, with no meaningful protection for citizens when that happens. For us, without a formal constitution, we can do anything, unless it’s actually illegal. Now, that leads to differences and court cases and an evolution of law. But I’d rather live in a country where everything is allowed, unless it’s not, than a country that only allows you to do what they say, and can override that with impunity.

It’s best summarised as most of the developed European countries having a framework which gives us freedom from things. Where as the developing US has a framework which is a freedom to do things ;)

Excellent post. Juvenile states don't necessarily understand that when we've been refining our rights since 1215 we don't necessarily need them all written down on a single piece of paper.

Reform are consistently riding high in the polls and people are Demonstrating in the streets . This government is hated .

By people, you mean the thick racist thugs, presumably?

The people who are so low down, they are relishing the opportunity to punch down for once in their sad little
lives

Those people?

Yet people told Vance to Fuck off in the Cotswolds.

Whats that if it’s not free speech?

No, he didn’t?

Yes this government is hated, but most of those demonstrating are not ordinary people but political activists.

Reform are only getting 30% in opinion polls, yes they are first but nowhere near the levels the Tories had in the last decade or indeed Labour under Jeremy Corbyn.

Rallentanda · 15/08/2025 11:59

It's a protest. The image is unpleasant but someone having it on their phone and being disallowed entry into the US is extremely authoritarian. For the VP of the US to say we don't have free speech: well, we do, mostly (unless you want to criticise the Israeli state but that's a different matter) and they are heading towards not having it - so people are protesting.

He is an awful, awful man btw. It goes far beyond 'not popular'.

We don't have free speech. Any gender critical person can confirm this

Its not like he flew over on a commercial flight to an air bnb and is keeping a low profile.

His 20 car convoy - wtf needs 20 cars - are disrupting so many people. Its costing us a fortune as taxpayers

Hes as vile as his boss

@CharmingDryad

can you explain why we don’t?

Yes, I wanted to ask for an example.

If you mean we can’t use racial slurs, that’s fine with me.

CharmingDryad · 15/08/2025 14:23

Poppingby · 15/08/2025 12:52

We don't, officially, you're right. None of you Americans' business what our unwritten constitution says though is it. Just as it's none of the UK's business that you all have a seemingly inflexible constitutional right to bear arms. We find it shocking but you don't find our politicians telling you you should sort it out, because it is not their right to do so.

Fair point.
