Buying a house

Justpeachy13 · 14/08/2025 17:05

My partner of 5 years and I both own properties. We always planned on selling both and buying somewhere together. However, because their property is a flat and mine is a house, I will get more money for my property. I’m expected to pay more towards the property. Myself 60% and them 40%. AIBU for not wanting to do this?

Doesn’t seem fair but how would he feel if you still own 60% in case of a breakup or death, you would need to get a solicitor involved to protect your investment

As long as you own it as tenants in common, with your 60/40 shares specifically stipulated, I can’t see a particular issue from a legal standpoint. You can then agree to split the mortgage payments and any generated equity 60/40 or 50/50 or in proportions which reflect your incomes.

Have it written into the legal paperwork that you own 60% share of equity. When you come to sell you will still have 60% equity share despite both paying 50/50 mortgage- your solicitor can do this.

As pps have said, if you pay 60% make sure you own 60%. No issue (unless you specifically wanted some cash freed up for other stuff).

But that’s unfair - pay half the mortgage and then only get 40% equity? I wouldn’t agree to that. You both ringfence your deposits, then split the mortgage repayments and the increase in equity 50/50 if you separate.

Thank you everyone.
