IceInYourVibe · 14/08/2025 14:59

So I’ve been so desperate to lose weight - I put my foot down on Thursday 7th and went on a 1000 calorie a day diet

Also did cardio every day (30 mins) and weights every other day

have lost 11 pounds on first week 💪

Good luck to anyone and everyone on a dieting mission - omg it’s so hard !!

And good luck to anyone on any self improvement mission - whatever it is !

I lost 14lb in my first week on mounjaro. Yes I know a lot will be water weight, but that was the difference in the scales - same time of day, naked both times.

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 14/08/2025 18:01

I have been losing weight since May 15th and the way I’ve sustained it so far is to not completely starve myself. I’ve lost 11.9kg in that time which averages to just over 2lb a week. I’ve done this through strict calorie counting and weighing all my food out for portion control. I also focus on trying to feel fuller for longer with lots of protein and reduced carbs. I haven’t even upped my exercise particularly although this will be my next step.

It’s definitely motivational to see a big loss initially. Try not to burn out though. I have done this in the past and only ever lost 8-10lb before giving up and putting it all back on again and then some.

Yes, you’re right. I have done this more than once. I’ll give you all the details and you can judge for yourself.

2yrs ago I lost lots of weight through calorie control and exercise, including kick starting with very low calorie.

I then suffered a period of ill health, bereavement and mental health issues.

Some of the weight came back on, but not all of it.

I am now back in a place where I am keen to lose that weight and am back into lower calorie. And the initial kick starting approach has worked well again.

It does work for me, but sometimes inconvenient things like breakdowns, inflections and death get in the way.

Is that clearer for you now?

Yes, it doesn’t work remains clear as people revert to how their own ‘normal’ works.

I gained 10 in a week on an all inclusive cruise 🫣😂

😂😂 I love you so much for that comment!

Re Michael Mosley- I have never seen/read any of his work on it, but wasn’t intermittent fasting his thing? That’s not the same thing as having 1000 kcals every day of the week.

Michael Mosely fast 800 was doing 800 calories a day on the Mediterranean diet for up to 12 weeks if you had a fair amount of weight to loose

Oh dear, some mean and jealous people in this thread. Great stuff OP, well done.

Not jealous, I have lost 6 stone. Not on 1000 calories a day though. More like 1500/1600

I’m not saying it’s your ‘fault’, it isn’t. Our bodies are programmed and our genetics will out. You just have to eat healthily and do your best to make a new ‘normal’. Kick starting, crash diets, cutting calories, increasing exercise is all blame and nonsense. You have to LIVE it. You have to be healthy as your ‘normal’. Diets and the whole industry and making people go crazy.

Restart your healthy journey, but take it easy, you are doing it for the rest of your life, take your time.

cutting calories

That’s literally how to shift weight. You can’t outrun a bad diet so exercise is futile unless you correct your diet. That goes hand in hand with cutting calories in 99% of people.

Calories in < Calories out

I’m sorry for your loss. Gently… this isn’t about you. This is someone wanting to share their weight loss and they’re clearly feeling really good about it. There’s times in life where we go through hell and times in life when we pull it back a little. No need to be shit … you don’t know what’s behind the weight that OP is losing.

I think you should've left it at feeling sorry for her loss to be quite honest.

If you’re counting calories you’re likely to fail as it’s about conscious restriction.

You are correct that less food is needed than most people believe.

Goal is to be consistent, losing this much this fast is not healthy, this will have a yoyo effect, once you diet goes back to normal (You cant survive 100 calories forever) your body will absorb double to compensate https://www.webmd.com/diet/rapid-weight-loss

So many questions for so many people on this thread!

@Reignonyourparade (great name, and particularly apt on this thread!) are you talking about the body’s response to restriction? That every restricted diet is likely to be shrugged off when the body fights back against restriction? It’s an idea I’m coming to terms with at the moment, and trying to manage excess weight and needing to avoid restriction.

@Iloveyoubut can you expand on your comment about inflammation?

and one for anyone and everyone… can we lose 11lb in a week, then eat sensibly for a month to maintain, then do it again?

Soggyspaniel · 15/08/2025 10:07

SwingTheMonkey · 14/08/2025 16:09

Oh really?! Which ones? 1000 calories a day is severe restriction and is only advised under strict medical supervision.

This isn’t strictly true, though. I’m 5 foot 2 and around 9 stone. If I want to lose a few pounds for a holiday I have to eat under 1000 calories a day to lose any weight at all. I certainly don’t need strict medical supervision. It all depends on height and metabolism.

I’m trying to clumsily say that ‘diets’ per se don’t really work. We often need reprogramming (for want of a better term), and a new ‘normal life’ regime in place: Less, good quality food, rainbow diet, heavy on plants, no ‘treats’, just food (treats being naughty, but the odd homemade cake is totally fine). If you don’t adjust your normal, whenever your ‘diet’ stops, you will just return to be beginning - usually with more weight as the cells in your body do indeed fight back.

Is this good for me? Do I want to see my grandkids?. Am I being kind to my body? whatever can motivate you to create a new food LIFE - ie forever. Don’t buy crap, don’t have biscuits and crisps in the house. Eat nuts (no I don’t care they are full of calories as I don’t count them), eat seeds, carry a tub of nets and seeds in your bag as a snack. Build a new way of life.

I want a healthy life, a long healthy life and so I need to be a healthy weight. I do have periods of eating crap, but I try and return to my (new) normal.

Changing your life is the only way, if you are unable to do that (I think some people need to fight their genes more than others) the new jabs are needed to help.

myplace · 15/08/2025 10:42

I agree in principle, @Reignonyourparade

Two problems-

  • my family putting rubbish in the cupboards that I then end up eating in a mindless moment.
  • I overeat specific foods because they are rare/restricted- crisps and chocolate basically.
I’m trying to remove the restricted mindset around those kinds of foods in the hope I will lose the desire to binge eat them.

Wasn’t aimed at you @chowmeinz , well done for finding a regime that suited you and worked. Amazing achievement. Some people have been very judgy though.

People’s calorific intake during the war years was minute in comparison with what people expect to eat today and there’s evidence to show they were a more healthy generation. Starvation isn’t to be recommended but reducing your intake to small portions of healthy unprocessed foods over a defined period isn’t likely to harm you.

Reignonyourparade · 15/08/2025 12:48

It's hard when others are not on the same path. In the same way I wouldn't have gone out with (shows my age!) my now DH if he were a smoker, I'd want my family to be eating well and healthily for their life. Not their life now, but when they are 60+ (although plenty of people have heart attacks before that, but they happen over years, not a 2 week holiday). We still eat biscuits and cake, but I don't buy them. The kids make them if they want to eat them. It's a compromise. I do get a bit of kick back, but whilst I do the shopping, then I make the choices. My smoking analogy is in part because I knew that being with a smoker would make me want to smoke. Being around food you don't really want is really really hard, but see if you can get them to buy in to your change of food, they may support you if you position it as life long health, not 'mum's latest diet'. I worry for our kids as they really are storing up problems for themselves down the line.

I'd argue that crisps and chocolate are not restricted, you are an adult, you can buy as much, and eat as much as you choose. Don't get me wrong, when a packet of crisps is opened (away on holiday it is typical for us), then I eat some. I tend to eat a few because these days I just see them as a waste of time. The fun has gone out of them. It's like taking drugs (which I've done quite a bit of too), once you realise they make you boring and depressive, the fun is gone.

I found that Ultra Processed People helped my mindset with food. Worth a read or a listen if you've not found it.

I know everyone knows all of this and I sound bit preachy, but honestly I realised something had to change when our friends started dying!

MrsSkylerWhite · 15/08/2025 12:50

Especially in the heat, a lot of that will be retained fluid.
Don’t go too low. Your metabolism will adjust and you’ll need to eat less and less to lose. Best off with a few more calories and lots of exercise. Far more sustainable long term.

MumbleBumbleAppleCrumble · 15/08/2025 14:33

I did the Fast800 a while back. Lost something like a stone in the first 10 days, then shot up a lot again in week 3 and stayed there for a week or so before then moving into steady decrease. It’s the water weight dropping off and your body going into panic mode. As long as you are following a sensible diet and exercising too (otherwise you lose muscle weight before fat), you should go into something steady soon. Just don’t get too excited by the first rush, its slow and steady there after.
And then once down you have to very carefully build up a sensible diet again that stays reasonably low carb/sugar so not to pile it all on fast again.
