New posters joining us in the genuine spirit of our civil discourse welcome. It would be helpful to get the background from at least some of the Observer items above before posting. There are currently a number of interesting items on The Observer website and linked to above.

To all - Please be extremely cautious when it comes to naming or implicating people and addresses not in the public eye or with no direct connection to the story, and around the understandable health speculations, especially where details are unclear or still emerging. Remember, even Hollywood rabbits attract the odd flea. Please do not engage with visitors who seem to have their own agenda and seek to derail. Avoid @'ing and quoting them as - from experience - this will only encourage them back to the threads. We have done amazingly well together for fourteen very interesting, very serious and very silly threads so far. I can't be here as much as I'd like so all help with keeping our discussion walking along in our usual reasonable and respectful fashion is very welcome.

Sally’s fingerprints all over it, especially the condescending tone she used with the person who liked Terry Pratchett

Found some screenshots, but there’s 22 of them!!!. Will try and post them bit by bit- hopefully in the right order- can’t guarantee it😅

Bookshops - at least, many of them - won't stock self published books. The quality can be too variable. Some will, particularly if they get to meet the author beforehand, or the author goes in personally and asks them to stock the book. Which might mean that the local bookshop owner that 'Izzy Wynn Thomas' asked to stock HNTDDD either didn't want books whose quality he couldn't guarantee - or that he didn't much like IWT.

Or that there never were any printed copies which looked professional enough for a bookshop to stock. I feel sure that they would have been print-on-demand ; I'd love to see one, if only to see if it looked like a kitchen table job!!

@AzureStaffy “Of course, it must be strange: you’ve got two relatively famous actors who are going to play you showing up at your house. But it was interesting to encounter a certain steeliness. It was informative for me to see that.” “

Yes, and even more - compare and contrast Jason, who is jumping all over the place and describes Tim as the nicest person he has ever met.

I don’t understand how he couldn’t see inconsistencies. Trig planking versus constant leg dragging, etc. He was a bit bemused as to how he did it & this just increased his respect.

Tealeaf3 · 16/08/2025 11:02

Bit busy just now, more to come soon

WhispersInTheFlowers · 16/08/2025 11:04

One of the most disappointing things for me was to find out that JI is a luvvie.

WhispersInTheFlowers · 16/08/2025 11:09

In one interview SW says " I followed Moth's footsteps in the dust". Oh PULEEZ how old are you, 12?

One of the most disappointing things for me was to find out that JI is a luvvie.

I'm sure I must have seen him in other things but really only knew JI as Lucius Malfoy. It was quite strange to see the luvvieness in the interviews! Shows they can act I suppose. My DM met Patrick Stewart many times and he is very pleasant apparently but King Luvvie when compared to Jean-Luc Picard.

WhispersInTheFlowers · 16/08/2025 11:15

I only knew JI as the gritty completely non luvvie Jackson Brodie!

Freshsocks · 16/08/2025 11:24

I can't keep up with you all, I returned to the thread only to find you have whizzed off with @Vroomfondleswaistcoat (who I imagine driving the charabanc) leaving just a faint whiff of fudge.

I'm still wondering where Dave and Julie are? ages ago @Tealeaf3 pointed out that they were not surprised that no family or friends had spoken against them, but more unusual, no family or friends have been publicly supportive.

It would be so interesting if someone could get hold of the lottery book, if a physical copy doesn't exist, does it mean it would not be considered published? for the terms of the award received.

Do we know where Dave and Julie are meant to live? Somewhere Up North and west like Cumbria or the Lake District? I wonder if they make a cameo appearance in OWT as they have appeared in the previous three books.

Freshsocks · 16/08/2025 11:45

Do they exist? really early on in these threads someone mentioned another writer who created a male persona and had a relative pretend to be them at book events. I did have a Google of plasterers called Dave Walker :)

TheBrandyPath · 16/08/2025 11:45

cricketandwhodunnits · 15/08/2025 09:05

Not the topic under discussion but it annoyed me no end that Dave has one "quirky northern speech tic" per book and has to use it EVERY TIME HE SPEAKS, but the tic changes. In TSP it's saying "me" at the end of every sentence that begins or could begin with "I". In TWS as folk have pointed out upthread it's "like", like. Can't stand it, me - at least be consistent in your totally improbable dialogue, like.

@Catwith69lives

You may be able to determine the exact location - by his accent!

Edited

They do appear in insta photos.

Freshsocks · 16/08/2025 11:50

They are in one photo that I have seen, but they are both wearing sunglasses.

Freshsocks · 16/08/2025 11:51

Not that it makes much difference when we have no idea who they are anyway I suppose, but Raymoth are not in shades.

Presumably they could be anyone who agreed to ‘be’ Dave & Julie.

I heard Dame Harriet Walter on the radio yesterday discussing Shakespeare. I hadn't realised what a luvvie she is. I had always thought her down to earth but I suppose that's a mark of how good she is as an actress.

If it's not all completely made up, I'm guessing M62 corridor, me. Maybe West Yorkshire or East Lancashire, like. He's not coded as Geordie, Yorkshire, Scouse or Mancunian, just as "northern" and "from up north". Will defer to any official Grim Up North Correspondent, I'm just a midlander, me.

At least, neither you nor Dave, are saddled with what Sal calls "a clotted cream accent" - excuse me spitting jam and cream (in no particular order)

cricketandwhodunnits · 16/08/2025 12:05

Though Julie doesn't have the Northern Speech Tics. Proper weird, that [NB: having lived in W Yorks, that is an example of the kind of sentence construction I would expect someone who talks like Dave in TSP to use, but of course he doesn't because he is only allowed one Northern Speech Tic per book]. Maybe making Julie talk northern as well would make the dialogue too annoying, like.

It was print on demand. The website took you to a third party book printing site for ordering the hard copy.

Ouch!! Where does she say that? (For the record I love a Devonian or Cornish accent, me).

Dave says at one point "going t'other way'. Isn't that Yorkshire?

ShrinkWrappedInSeattle · 16/08/2025 12:12

Does someone have a copy of LL? They are mentioned quite a bit there and meet up to do the Pennine Way. Somehow South Yorkshire has stuck in my mind as a possible Dave’n’Julie habitat.

Freshsocks · 16/08/2025 12:12

I wonder what story Raymoth are weaving for their family and friends, I can't remember who said that Salray might have told them Martin Hemmings wanted her to have the money, or she was an innocent victim of his bad business skills and she unable to prove her innocent had to pay him money to save herself from criminal conviction.

I suppose I like the idea of Raymoth having to attempt damage limitation by spreading some money around, so that their ill gotten gains are depleted, especially combined with book sales falling and no public appearances to boost funds. They might be able to buy people's silence, not so easy to pay people to speak up for them.

What accent is Julie supposed to have?
