New posters joining us in the genuine spirit of our civil discourse welcome. It would be helpful to get the background from at least some of the Observer items above before posting. There are currently a number of interesting items on The Observer website and linked to above.

To all - Please be extremely cautious when it comes to naming or implicating people and addresses not in the public eye or with no direct connection to the story, and around the understandable health speculations, especially where details are unclear or still emerging. Remember, even Hollywood rabbits attract the odd flea. Please do not engage with visitors who seem to have their own agenda and seek to derail. Avoid @'ing and quoting them as - from experience - this will only encourage them back to the threads. We have done amazingly well together for fourteen very interesting, very serious and very silly threads so far. I can't be here as much as I'd like so all help with keeping our discussion walking along in our usual reasonable and respectful fashion is very welcome.

Timoth comes across as the kind of louche man who counts on his good looks and charm carrying him through life. It looks as if that's worked most of the time.

Spot on I think & they often have downtrodden partners who do all they can to keep them happy. Often these men are terrible flirts, Paul
Hollywood etc.

Jason Issacs apparently believed Moth dragging a leg all the way around to some degree (how?) & was blown away by him. I sensed a later coolness with GA who was not gushing about either & I think perhaps the penny dropped for her.

Gillian Anderson's description of SalRay as 'guarded' is very perceptive. When SalRay's on the One Show with Jason Isaacs, Timothy Spall is looking decidedly unimpressed.

'guarded' 'cagey' - these epithets about SW keep on occurring.

The One Show interview is illuminating. Ray is upset by Jason’s ‘you can’t say anything but I can’. The terse ‘anyway’ same as Aussie interview when he probes on ‘dispute with lifetime friend’. Moth is sticking to plan - he was there but controlled interaction - Ray on script. No GA.

Catwith69lives · 15/08/2025 11:23

I think it was mentioned on an earlier thread but what was the origin of the title "The Salt Path". Wasn't there a Cornish connection of some sort - a band or a theatre group?

Aphrodite the goddess of procreation - created from the castration of Uranus and born of the sea foam - appears before these emasculated men....

Take your heart pill, Doug, and look the other way.’
‘It’s all right, mate, if you pass out I can do CPR.’ Dave and Julie sat on the other side of the picnic bench....... ‘Bloody hell, old men, eh? Don’t want to get old, me, angina and diabetes, arthritis and stuff like that. No, I’m just going to keep walking, then we’ll be all right, won’t we, Ju?’
‘Hopefully.’
‘We all hope for that.’ Moth gave me a look that said, ‘Don’t say it.’ To anyone else he appeared to be just laughing and drinking tea.

I agree, and have appreciated the comments of other posters on this.

I would like to emphasise another aspect that I have noticed. We have the usual scene, which we have grown accustomed to, which includes:

Stunning visual image
Comedic sketch
Sal's intimate knowledge of Tim
Allusion to serious health condition

This sets us up for The Main Theme:

‘I don’t know. It’s obviously got something to do with heavy endurance exercise. It must cause some sort of reaction that we don’t understand. I don’t know how it works, I just feel great.’ We jumped and danced in the fog of Golden Cap

This is where Tim does his plank party piece on a trig point.- to show his effortless fitness.

I am sure someone shared a photo of him doing some sort of raised action on a stone near the beginning of the walk the year before, though?

When did GA say SW 'guarded' ? Was it during an interview?

Yes, he's pictured in a deleted IG photo standing on an old stone wall with his allegedly sore arm holding on to a statue that's also part of the wall. This was on day two near Porlock Weir. Makes one wonder how he managed to get on and off it.

Yes, thanks. Well makes it even more obvious to me why that one was deleted. Couldn't be much nearer the beginning either ...

Well he won't be the only Man from Porlock who messes up a literary effort ....

SwetSwetSwet · 15/08/2025 11:42

No-one knows what goes on behind closed doors. I mentioned before that the DIL seems very effusive about lovely SW on Facebook, but barely mentions TW. This seems to be the opposite of how the outside world see the couple, with charismatic Moth and cold guarded Rayner. But, of course, who knows!

WhispersInTheFlowers · 15/08/2025 11:43

I think SW clearly shows a lack of relationship experience as evidenced by the fact that she met Moth as a teenager. That lack of experience seems to have eternally stuck her in lovestruck teenager mode. She comes across as very immature for a woman in her sixties still harping on about her " beautiful man". Men can be beautiful inside of course but if she is still bleating on about his looks it's really rather sad and pathetic.

DisappointedReader · 15/08/2025 11:47

Good morning dear rabbits. I hope all is well with you today.

Musings on Dave and Julie:
It seems unlikely these are their real names. Are they really northern or just two more made-up lazy stereotypes? Nearly everywhere in the UK is north when you are in Cornwall. Are they really friends they made on the walk or are they relatives? I do see some physical similarities in photos. We know from the photos that they are real people but how much about them has been changed for the books and, like the Parsons, what do they think and feel about how they have been portrayed and about the recent revelations? Are they still 'friends' and in contact now? Will they come forward?

Sorry it’s been a busy week but I’m just going back to another thing that struck me as really odd. The Conversations with Cornesy Australian interview which was shared in the last thread.

RW says Jason Isaac’s was running up and down the stairs and jumping on and off kitchen worktops to try to copy Moth’s movements.

JI seems a reasonably fit man so surely trying to understand how Moth could barely get his coat on, struggled to walk etc would have been his focus. Very strange!

Edited

@SimoArmo Makes one wonder how he managed to get on and off it.

Yes and sheds light on the above post outlining Jason's method acting.

I think someone mentioned a "Salt Road"

RejoinedbecauseofTSPthreads · 15/08/2025 12:10

I didn't follow them on Instagram before this and I know it's been frequently mentioned that photos are deleted. Looks to me like a managed PR page for them rather than a personal one. It's quite curated. Also not a lot of photos of Moth (make of that what you will).
I don't think we can really use that as a source.

I only went to look because I was actually musing that maybe they're not actually together anymore. Would explain why he's always at the shops (other explanations as discussed at length previously). I know lots of couple who are 'friends' but not actually married still in any real sense. They need to be 'together' for the books to work. Would also explain why all the 'wonderful amazing Moth' stuff is quite unrealistic. Certainly it's actually not usual for women of middle age to not be quite jokey about their long term partners. I can't think of anyone who is not like that!

But didn't one of the sleuths in an earlier thread say they live local to them and see them??

I'm quite invested now in TW being the real grifter.

I cant remember or find it on Amazon but there is a book about Salt routes and also several on the Silk road. I remember reading a really well known travel book in the 90s about doing The silk road. I thought it was William Dalrymple but seems not! (He has one called The Golden road).

SALT ROAD Anna Maria Murphy & Bagas Degol Salt Road is peppered with tales of whimsy and wisdom, to entrance both young and old alike.

DisappointedReader · 15/08/2025 12:27

Ponderings on Salray, GA describing her as 'guarded', descriptions of other women:

  • I think some of us, as women, do pick up intuitively on underlying currents and perhaps GA is one of those
  • If Salray has potentially spent a lifetime with low self-esteem, and her adulthood feeling insecure about 'keeping her beautiful man', then other women, especially ones she perceives to be more attractive than herself, are a threat
  • GA could have picked up on the undercurrent of the things Raymoth were keeping hidden such as the embezzlement and Sayray's feelings of jealousy and insecurity - perhaps even hostility - around GA
  • GA and Salray strike me as being two very different women
  • Salray sexualises women she sees as more physically attractive than her when she writes. Grant's 'assistants' or a swimmer minding her own business are seen as she imagines Timmoth is seeing them through his eyes. Perhaps that is a result of her insecurities or perhaps she has spent her adulthood listening to Timmoth objectifying women. Or perhaps Timmoth wrote or contributed those passages
  • Difficulties in Raymoth's sexual relationship are mentioned, perhaps adding to Salray's feelings of insecurity
  • The other quite significant aspect for me is that Salray in all likelihood was going through the menopause at the time of writing/not writing and walking/not walking. That can play havoc with emotions and confidence levels
  • Salray has very clearly had a glow up since achieving financial success

But this is different - it is of the people and for the people.

Anna has travelled the length and breadth of Cornwall collecting stories that have since become wildly exaggerated in a collection of poetry and prose.

And it is HONEST.

If someone is light fingered in the bookkeeping department then it comes as no surprise to think they could well be light fingered in the creative department too.

It would fit my Jigsaw Theory about the TSP industry output.

I can't quite see TW as the masterminding grifter - he seems too " open" whereas SW is suspicious and furtive with concealed behaviours ( embezzlement)
