I bought an item which was coming from Denmark. It's a collectable figure.
When it arrived it was the right item, but not the colour of the one in the photo, so basically not as described.
He told me to return it for a refund. I told him I was not happy paying for the return, as item is not as described. He emailed to say he would refund me for that as well.
He then asked me to return it to the USA, which I did. It was tracked, costing £21.85 .
I received the full refund for the item, including the original postage. However, he is ignoring all my emails and has not refunded the postage back to the USA.
I cannot figure out where to complain to ebay about this - can anyone help?

You should have asked him for a pre-paid returns label. I think you’re unlikely to get your money back.

Doesn't eBay step in within a certain time limit.

dancerdog · 13/08/2025 16:42

I thought ebay could step in, I have the proof of the email in my ebay account where he says he will pay the cost of returning to USA - it's where to start this with ebay that I can't figure out.

Also, posted in AIBU by mistake!

He won't refund the postage - he needed to provide a pre-paid label. Ebay wouldn't be able to force him.

Sorry, OP!

Did you return it to a different address than ebay told you to?

Sounds like drop shipping

dancerdog · 13/08/2025 16:51

I've found the right bit in ebay so I'll email them anyway, although realise that's unlikely to help. So annoying,

All you can do is leave a negative review, report his listing, kick up a fuss. But it’s doubtful that eBay themselves will refund you for your shipping costs - they aren’t going to get involved in something you agreed to with him that doesn’t involve their own returns/shipping service. When you open up a case for item not as described they make the seller arrange the postage.

You sent it to a totally different place to where it came from, I don't think ebay will touch that. Why didn't you send it back to Denmark?

Iloveeverycat · 13/08/2025 16:59

Did you not open a not as described case they would have sent a pre paid return label to return it.

dancerdog · 13/08/2025 17:12

I've only ever done a few returns and didn't pay attention to the potential problems - lesson learned, thanks for responses., I'll leave htis now.

I did, but he didn't send me a postage form

Will it let you open a dispute now? You only have 30 days from when you receive the item to start one. You could try that but I think you may have had it :-(

AuntyDepressant · 13/08/2025 17:22

Sellers have to pay for return postage so it would have been better to go through eBay, but ask them anyway as they might be able to intervene. If not then just put it down to experience and make sure they send you a postage label. They shouldn’t be letting you pay it then offering a refund.

For future reference, there is also an ebay specific forum. Not saying you can't post the query here, but the specific ebay forum has multiple sections with hundreds of answers for similar queries. Best of luck OP.

dancerdog · 17/08/2025 13:31

Thanks for responses. I did raise a dispute with ebay, but was rejected.

Basically, lesson learned. I did leave negative feedback.
