That today's forecast for the South and South East of England was and is very wrong

I'm in central London and it is raining. On the BBC weather app it is telling me that in central London it is clear sunshine now and for the rest of the day. When I woke up this morning the BBC weather app told me it would be sunshine and clouds this morning and then turn into a clear sunny scorcher. Well, it fully clouded over at about 11am and has only got darker and more cloudy since then and there's been thunder & lightening and rain on and off for at least an hour now!!!!

Why? How? Even the nowcast is wrong!!!

I’m am seriously considering air con ! I know it’s a lot to run etc, but one room with it would be awesome.
Maybe one day

Forecast for Glasgow was taps aff and it felt more like skin aff. Absolutely melting and sunny. Has apparently cooled by a good 5 degrees over the last couple of hours, there's a wee breeze thank god.

Dilbertian · 13/08/2025 18:03

My laundry has been well-rinsed with lovely, soft rain water today. Just the one load, several rinses. At least it stopped raining after lunch, but I had expected to power through at least three loads today.

I always check the met office cloud maps as they seem a lot more reliable than the symbols.

Patchworkted · 13/08/2025 18:05

I'm 15 miles from Central London. It's got more and more humid and unpleasant as the day's gone on, but we haven't had any rain. Sometimes weather is very localised.

CunningPlanMaster · 13/08/2025 18:09

How bizarre OP. I was coming onto Mn to start the exact same thread! I’m Greater London (south) and my weather app said bright cloudless sky and 28 degrees all day. I have t seen the sun through the grey clouds all day, it’s humid but mild and it’s just rained on and off for 3 hours.

I was walking back to the car thinking to myself that I can’t remember when the forecast was last this wrong. And then realised I’m very boring!!!

The weather forecast has been getting less and less accurate for a while now.

Which you'd expect if the chaos in the system is increasing

Indeed.

WellIquitelikesprouts · 13/08/2025 18:11

I read something on the Met Office app yesterday saying that the climate is now too unstable to predict. It's global warming. Thank goodness London has had some much needed rain today.

thecatneuterer · 13/08/2025 18:11

Also in London. Very wrong, but I'm very glad it was. What a nice relief. Still damn hot though - it's how I imagine a tropical rainforest feels.

LOL, I've been texting friends about it, that's how boring I am!!

Here near the sunny south coast, in fact it's not sunny at all no sun all day. BBC completely wrong. Perhaps they shld take heatwave shock horror off their main headlines or stop talking about it so much.

Plastictreees · 13/08/2025 18:15

26 here on the west coast of Scotland today… no rain forecast all week (we’ll see). Probably one of the best summers I’ve had here!

WhereAreWeNow · 13/08/2025 18:16

Same! I was totally caught out today. Underdressed and no umbrella!

HarperStern · 13/08/2025 18:17

Got on this train in wiltshire, was like an oven, now in south dorset and pleasantly cool - big difference within a few miles around the wilts/Somerset border.

BatshitCrazyWoman · 13/08/2025 18:17

Met Office app is currently saying it's cloudy where I am, and it is. I find that app quite accurate. I'm on the London/Kent border and we only had a couple of spots of rain though, I'd love a bloody good storm!

Lostfidgetcube · 13/08/2025 18:18

They got South Yorkshire right, unfortunately. 🥵

someonethatyoulovetoomuch · 13/08/2025 18:23

Very much enjoying the beautiful second summer here in NE Scotland, a lovely week before the kids go back to school. Sure it’ll rain again here soon enough!

Thank you! I didn’t realise these exist.

South west coast here, in Dorset, just a handful of miles from the border with Hampshire (inland and about a mile or so from the beach as the crow flies).

After a really hot and uncomfortably stuffy night, I got up with high expectations given the forecast - a bit of cloud in the morning then sunshine in the afternoon, coolish 21/22 with a bit of a breeze. So I got a load of laundry in the washing machine early on and pegged it out.

Well, there's been a bit of a breeze, but the cloud hasn't lifted all day and we've had spits and spots of rain now and then. Sky currently looks a tad like a storm might be coming - darkish with a yellowy tinge. Washing is still on the line and, yes, MN purists, I AM going to leave it on the line overnight to be darked on... Because I can't be arsed to bring it in again!

On another note re accuracy of forecasts. I worked at the Met Office HQ in Exeter for a while as a contractor 20 years or so ago . Fascinating place. Every Thursday afternoon (maybe 2pm?) we would all gather in the main 'concourse' area of the building and a senior forecaster would give us the weather predictions for the coming weekend.

The next Thursday, the presenter would then give a brief outline of how that forecast did or didn't measure up to what actually happened before embarking on the next forecast. It was fascinating stuff...
