Uk is in big trouble - what do you think will happen?

Thames water on brink of collapse. All those CEOs getting fat bonuses. Water shortages and rising bills.

the cost of living is off the chart. Every bill has gone up. Pop in to Tesco for toothpaste, butter and chicken and it costs an insane amount for just a few items.

the government are crap and taxing the hell out of us.

my salary is stuck. I feel constantly poor now. 10 years ago when I earned significantly less, I felt ok money wise. Chatted today to a colleague about science graduate son who is stuck doing a minimum wage job as there are no jobs here. I’ve noticed this myself in my town. The council have a few, other companies outsourced to India years ago, the pharma company moved out years ago and the land will soon be a new housing estate.

the nhs is a total mess.

housing costs make me want to weep! No chance of moving. Feel bad for my kids. They just keep building expensive houses here all packed into poorly designed estates. Tiny gardens. But no infrastructure. The promised schools get cancelled and drs surgeries and hospitals are rammed with patients. My mortgage of course is up.

in my industry… everyone is obsessed with AI and I’m sad to say it has taken some jobs already. There is a huge push towards AI.

there seems to be underlying tension here re migrants. People getting increasingly annoyed.

this country feels like a right mess. Making rich people richer and poor people even poorer. The middle earners are getting squeezed. I hate it.

i don’t remember it being this bad ever before.

why is it so terrible? And what do you think will happen?

Well yes. I think maybe @mrsskylerwhite didn't see my username!

Possibly. Only read the comments, generally, not user names.

Sorry. Would you mind refreshing my memory?

Unfortunately, this kind of thread is so full of fruitcakes that it’s often quite difficult to detect irony/humour …. intelligence?

Where did I say anything about Reform?

Oh, sorry, I misunderstood. So do you agree that Reform's policies are uncosted bullshit?

twistyizzy · 13/08/2025 20:52

So same as Starmer then? An ex-independent school, Oxford educated millionaire.
That's my point and highlights why Starmer and Labour are hated. They came in on a campaign of "we are different" "grown ups are on charge" "transparency". They are just the same as Tories but actually worse because they are hypocrites. They lied to get in and are incompetent once in.
That's why there is so much anger against them.

Bit of a stretch there to equate a day and boarding public school which has been fee paying for centuries with a voluntary aided grammar school which became a fee paying independent school in the 70s but allowed those already there, like Starmer, to stay without paying fees. Likewise a hell of a stretch to compare multi millionaire Farage with Starmer who maybe scrapes together a million by virtue of the fact that he ives in London and property prices there are bonkers. And at least he pays taxes here, unlike Farage.

But hey, don't let the facts get in the way of your prejudices, will you?

Again, behave. Are you unaware of the previous government’s record?

However, if it makes you happy:

First two, outrageous, if proven, they must be sacked and/or charged iif appropriate. Obviously.

Only reference I can find to the last three is in the right wing press, so you’ll forgive me if I hold judgement and take a dose of salt?

Were by any chance any of the guests diplomats or politicians from overseas at David Lammy’s “party”?
If so, probably the going rate (Liz Truss’s in-flight entertainment bills, anyone?)
If it was a party for his kids and their mates Edith bouncy castles? Yep, would be seriously cross and expect his arse to be handed to him in a plate.

As an earlier poster said, context is everything.

Fishing without a license? Don’t be a dick. It was an official photo opportunity with the VP of the US (who, for the record, I also think is a dock).
Barrel scraping.

You what now? What’s with the name calling

What did Labour say repeatedly during their election campaign over and over? Yes, that’s right, “all our plans are fully costed”. I knew it was total bullshit which is why I didn't vote for them.

God yeh Starmer must have really scraped around trying to find his £5-7 million net worth status 🙄 he probably found it down the back of the sofa

milveycrohn · 13/08/2025 21:20

Job security was far worse in the 1970s.
People may have 'Thought' they had security, but it was much easier to get rid of people then than it is now, and there was no minimum wage.
The right to return to work after maternity leave also came in during that time, and I well remember the first woman at work to return after having her DC.
Unemployment was the biggest issue of the day!

The same polls which have Reform out in front and a PP said those polls shouldn't be believed. It doesn't matter about EU poll, no party has said they will hold a referendum or reverse Brexit so its a moot point.

Interestingly, they're not doing nearly so well in areas where people are seeing the reality of Reform-led councils and Reform MPs who are turning out to be worse than useless. The downside of them doing so well in the last local elections is that it gives a few years to demonstrate to the electorate just what a disaster area they are if they come anywhere near power.

MrsSkylerWhite · 13/08/2025 21:22

twistyizzy · 13/08/2025 21:13

You have.

Where?

MiloMinderbinder925 · 13/08/2025 21:22

twistyizzy · 13/08/2025 21:11

Because it is and here is a handy guide:
A rhetorical tactic where someone responds to an accusation or criticism by deflecting attention to another issue or action, often by pointing out a similar wrong committed by the accuser or a third party. It's a form of argument that shifts the focus from the original issue to a different one, often implying that the accuser is also guilty of the same or similar wrongdoing.

So when someone criticises Labour and you say "but what about the Tories" then yes, that's whataboutery.

Edited

No it's not. You're attempting to talk about the state of the country in a vacuum. You're perfectly aware that the state of the country isn't due to Labour but the past 14 years of governance.

No one with any intelligence would expect Labour to have rectified everything in a year.

Resorting to name calling is pretty low base. A Labour supporter told me to report name calling as MN views them as personal attacks so I will do that. No need to engage any further now you've sunk to that level

Did you expect Labour to make it a whole lot worse? That's exactly what's happened, demonstrated in current polling.

PandoraSocks · 13/08/2025 21:28

We recently had two council by-elections in Wales. Both areas could be seen as prime potential Reform territory.

Electorate said nope. Low turn out, but still, gives me hope.

Can you name the towns that have become no go areas? Illegal immigrants are rejected asylum seekers or those who have overstayed their visa. Facts matter.

You are saying that technically illegal immigrants are not being housed, and that in terms of facts in the country there is a mix of illegal immigrants (not being housed officially) and people who have come over and have claimed asylum and are waiting to be assessed and may or not eventually be granted asylum - is that right?

If so, just to explain to you that the issue which is raised by others here is that such numbers coming in are too many for the UK to cope with. Many existing residents of the UK cannot afford to live and there aren't adequate services to meet their needs and the situation is not being managed and there is risk - if some of the people are brought in by traffickers, there is inevitable risk. What do you think?

I didn't expect Labour to have magically transformed the country in a year. There was a petition to call a general election a few months after Labour were elected and Labour have hardly made everything a lot worse.

Some people are very childlike and expect complex issues to be immediately resolved.

I think the question was - did you expect Labour to make everything worse?
