Uk is in big trouble - what do you think will happen?

Thames water on brink of collapse. All those CEOs getting fat bonuses. Water shortages and rising bills.

the cost of living is off the chart. Every bill has gone up. Pop in to Tesco for toothpaste, butter and chicken and it costs an insane amount for just a few items.

the government are crap and taxing the hell out of us.

my salary is stuck. I feel constantly poor now. 10 years ago when I earned significantly less, I felt ok money wise. Chatted today to a colleague about science graduate son who is stuck doing a minimum wage job as there are no jobs here. I’ve noticed this myself in my town. The council have a few, other companies outsourced to India years ago, the pharma company moved out years ago and the land will soon be a new housing estate.

the nhs is a total mess.

housing costs make me want to weep! No chance of moving. Feel bad for my kids. They just keep building expensive houses here all packed into poorly designed estates. Tiny gardens. But no infrastructure. The promised schools get cancelled and drs surgeries and hospitals are rammed with patients. My mortgage of course is up.

in my industry… everyone is obsessed with AI and I’m sad to say it has taken some jobs already. There is a huge push towards AI.

there seems to be underlying tension here re migrants. People getting increasingly annoyed.

this country feels like a right mess. Making rich people richer and poor people even poorer. The middle earners are getting squeezed. I hate it.

i don’t remember it being this bad ever before.

why is it so terrible? And what do you think will happen?

So Corbyn was a factor?
Fwiw, I prefer Corbyn to Starmer. At least you know what he stands for.
Starmer's principles change with the bloody weather.

Does he have any principles?
Does he have any independent thoughts?

smugmugg · 13/08/2025 20:38

It's not rocket science that you can't carry out huge tax cuts whilst improving public services. They are going down the Truss route but on a much bigger scale.

@TheNuthatch Is Farage untested? I would say we saw the outcome of Brexit and it was very different to the proposed benefits...

Their policies don't make any sense & they will set us back further like Brexit has done.

They don't really have any policies set in stone rn. They don't need them yet. Right now, all they need to do is not be Labour.
The same tactics used by Labour pre election, all they needed to do was not be the tories.
Reform have never been in government, so yes they are untested.

Johnson's lies were the biggest factor, helped by Farage standing down.

And people are back to cheering for the latter.

smugmugg · 13/08/2025 20:39

@twistyizzy what are Reform going to do to improve the lives of those in the North or the poor?

twistyizzy · 13/08/2025 20:09

You've got a lot to be furious about at then moment then sadly.

Behave. Reprise the past 14 years.

lljkk · 13/08/2025 20:40

what do you think will happen?

That there will be a different poster name scaremongering about stuff tomorrow, on Mumsnet and other social media, and the day after that. And so on, forever.

Stop the boats. Then everything will improve.

smugmugg · 13/08/2025 20:41

I have heard it described as putting out fire with gasoline.

perhaps people just want it all to burn

twistyizzy · 13/08/2025 19:59

On MN the majority were confident that the result would be Remain. "No-one could be stupid enough to vote Leave" was a popular phrase.
No lessons learned from that I see.

Huge lesson learned. Don't be complacent.
Thankfully, “The polls” are now very much in favour of rejoining the EU.

smugmugg · 13/08/2025 20:42

Yep, that old chestnut. Strangely they haven't gone into detail on how they will do that or what it will cost.

The red wall voted for Johnson because of Brexit.

You can believe whatever you like. People are not going to Reform because they adore Farage. They are going to Reform because Labour have failed. Bashing Farage for previous conduct will make no difference whatsoever.

Agrumpyknitter · 13/08/2025 20:45

where were you when the Tories were decimating our public services for the past 14 years? Labour is trying to put some of it right. It’s stopped the water bosses from getting bonuses as you claim, did you know that? They’re making a huge investment in the NHS and they’re committed to growth in the London Markets (I work in Financial services so this is happening right now).

all the poor non doms (millionaires who were leaving the uk in droves) because they’re finally having to pay their way and you’re only concerned now because all the papers owned by billionaires are telling you to be worried. Why is that? They don’t want to pay their way.

Even Labour are listening to lobbists and the rich and are not going as far as they should. I agree it’s always the middle who are being squeezed. But they’re committing to more green energy not allowing fracking to ruin the environment.

whats the alternative? Vote reform who will ruin the country.
Farage always votes against workers rights, will dismantle the NHS, he voted against the free breakfasts that Labour introduced and called it some ‘socialist’ nightmare and he’s great mates with Andrew Tate so that shows you how much he values women.

Farage won’t be untested by the next election. He’ll have a four year record of his party running ten county councils. We’ll have a fair idea of what his policies achieve in microcosm.

The problem is for Labour they’ve used a few lines pre GE to now that people can see are false.

Yes, they should have been more honest but I don't think the electorate care about lying as much as me & you.

MrsSkylerWhite · 13/08/2025 20:39

Whataboutery as a distraction. Labour are in power now and you said you would be fuming with them.

So this week Labour have:
Anti corruption minister charged with corruption
Homeless minister making people homeless
Councillor up in court for inciting riots
Lammy fishing without a licence
Lammy spends 50K of taxpayer money on a party

Any more for any more?

smugmugg · 13/08/2025 20:48

PandoraSocks · 13/08/2025 20:40

Rubbish. Brexit supposedly was going to give millions to the NHS (lies) and allow the UK to have sovereignty over its borders to stop the boats. Well that was a load of rubbish, wasn’t it? Farage sold those Brexit lies and has just re rebranded to Reform and the gormless believe him.

Farage isn’t for the working class he’s a public schooled millionaire grifter who sees himself as your better and don’t you forget it when there’s no NHS and you can’t afford to see the GP (if they get in).

twistyizzy · 13/08/2025 20:49

MrsSkylerWhite · 13/08/2025 20:41

Huge lesson learned. Don't be complacent.
Thankfully, “The polls” are now very much in favour of rejoining the EU.

The same polls which have Reform out in front and a PP said those polls shouldn't be believed. It doesn't matter about EU poll, no party has said they will hold a referendum or reverse Brexit so its a moot point.

smugmugg · 13/08/2025 20:50

I think they do and Labour are seeing it in the polls

But Reforms policies are bullshit so people switching to Reform can't be bothered about lying.
